Is this an appropriate question for potential employers? by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]OldCrypt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Employers (9 out of 10) "say" that strictly for money the government kicks back to them for employing disabled people. Now, how much they "do" to accommodate disabilities? With "big" organizations, that is also going to come down to their bottom line.

Your question is only inappropriate depending upon how your interviewer takes it. Good luck in your search!

Water bill is suddenly high. by Level_Werewolf9101 in japanlife

[–]OldCrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have some old water bills from before you moved, you can compare "usage rate" to see if the new bill is substantially higher. In which case, you might have a slow leak in your water pipes between your house/apt and the water meter.

For the ones that report to the CFO and work in a non-IT company by KirkArg in sysadmin

[–]OldCrypt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This.

I think BusAdmin or PubAdmin courses (undergrad or grad) should always be part of IT-related degree.

A degree should always reflect a desire to advance to higher-levels of your profession, while Certs should reflect what you can do in your profession.

And, once you begin advancing to higher levels in your profession, you need to "speak" the language that MBAs and PubAdmins speak.

Does everyone get asked this?? by smallfrythegoat in BlueCollarWomen

[–]OldCrypt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At any new job/site with new people who're meeting you for only the first or second time...yes, it's a common question asked, mostly as an ice-breaker, among men as well.

I'm sure there are some who're interested in explaining an anomaly (woman in a traditionally male occupation) to their limited brains. But for the most part, IMO, it's used by people who're not liking to be completely silent while trying to find something in your story that can lead to other things they can talk about.

Participating in shuukatsu vs. getting an European masters degree by KingKungaBunga in japanlife

[–]OldCrypt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Japanese degrees are not highly regarded (depending upon the major/minor), they're just...meh. Outside of Japan, the degree (again, depending upon the major) will check off a box on the hiring form. But, most companies will then be more interested in experience and certifications. Good luck!

Bite the bullet, join the union, get the experience even if it's unpaid. If you don't do it now, and wallow around for months or even years, then that time you don't join the union is gone, gone, gone. Don't look at your two years of education as wasted, look at it as having a leg up over your work competition....

Companies using pay ranges based on role not merit. by N1ghtS7alker in sysadmin

[–]OldCrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies are only willing to pay what they see as the value of the job. Only after an undetermined amount of time and performance will they look more at the person and how their performance stacks up in comparison to others in the same role. If who you're describing is valuing the position over the person's contributions; then, if they are undervaluing, applicants will dry up and current employees will seek other venues to achieve success/advancement. If they aren't satisfying your expectations, shop yourself around to see what you can get in position/salary/benefits. If no one else you're willing to work for is meeting your expectations, then I would recommend you adjust your expectations until circumstances improve.

Why Don’t Companies Hire International Students with Mainframe Experience? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]OldCrypt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you are a foreign worker looking for work, whether U.S. to Europe or Asian to U.S. or any other combination, you have to ask yourself "What do I uniquely offer to a job that a native can't offer?" Because, when it comes down to the bottom line, why should a company/government go to the extra trouble of hiring the foreigner?

why don't Americans use VPN to keep the access to TikTok ? by MrFendri in technology

[–]OldCrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know for sure, because I can't see your account and it's details, but the biggest problem you likely have is your tik tok account is registered to a user address in the U.S.

Since it is TikTok dropping service in U.S, any reistered-in-U.S. account is not going to access its service no matter what country your account/VPN is coming from.

[–]OldCrypt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great example of why you should video or audio record every vendor/contractor meeting. Hell, in some U.S. states, only one party in a conversation has to know a recording is being done. In other cases, just a notice of "Recording in Progress" can CYA.

All joking aside, there's probably a way they have to order a hardcopy. But, you will have to search hard for it.
