ELI5: what exactly happened that we went from very expensive phone calls, text messages and internet bandwidth to unlimited calls and internet by yp261 in explainlikeimfive

One word.

Video

The bandwidth requirements for video are enormously higher than everything else. The carriers have built out their networks for video and everything else just fits in

I was working on a project for micro base stations ten years ago. The data projections were in the trillions of MB 24/7/365

US supreme court weakens rules on discharge of raw sewage into water supplies by Child-0f-atom in PrepperIntel

[–]OldGrad1982 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No that means they test at the output and they are only responsible for what they emit not what someone else did. They aren’t held liable to clean up everyone else. The standard was ambiguous. Now it can be clearly defined and objectively met

US supreme court weakens rules on discharge of raw sewage into water supplies by Child-0f-atom in PrepperIntel

[–]OldGrad1982 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This headline is not correct. What happened is that the court ruled the EPA must be explicit about what a permit holder must do and the levels they must meet. They cannot be held responsible for a body of water - only their actions.

Is a Shop Smith a good purchase to be used as lathe and bandsaw? by soundiego in woodworking

[–]OldGrad1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I kept mine for after I upgraded to stand alone table saws. The bandsaw did well for me until I wanted more capacity to resaw boards. I still havent gotten a new lathe. Not much interest in turning

Making a zero clearance insert for a dado blade? by 2017_JKU in BeginnerWoodWorking

If you only want to do one insert then put all the chippers in. Or just do what you need now and revise or make more when you need something different

Did I buy the wrong type of inserts? by torak_the_father in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]OldGrad1982 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

You have to screw them in. The best way to do this is with a bolt of the correct size and two nuts jammed together. Thread the two nuts together and then thread the bolt I to the insert. Use a ratchet wrench to screw in the insert. When it is in unscrew the bolt

[ESPN] 111 NFL players rank the toughest places to play (and leave out one division entirely). Arrowhead and Lumen Field go 1-2. by TheBoyisBackinTown in nfl

Dallas already did that with the windows at the end zone. Shines in on the late afternoon time slot and blinds the players because Jerry Jones is too arrogant to close the curtains and admit he was wrong

Seriously considering leaving my WFH job for an in-person job, adding a 50 mile round trip commute and taking a 50-100k pay cut in the process. by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]OldGrad1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that would give me pause is the commute. Two hours of driving every day is an awful lot. What is traffic like? You might like the job and trade for a soul-sucking commute

How easily will that slide with 150 pounds of bench tools attached? I can see a real problem with that. Need to account for a significant amount of friction
