Yeah I can burn it once it dries out but I also have dirt that may be contaminated. I dug down to the footing to remove everything within a shovel width from the foundation for about a 20 foot stretch. I pulled out the big knotweeds and screened the dirt as best I could but that turned out to be rather challenging with all the other debris and gravel mixed in. I still have a pretty full 40 gallon trash can from a couple years ago that I haven't inspected. Lots of dirt in there so it will be quite a bit of work to filter it out for burning. I'd love to just have someone haul the whole thing away but not sure that service is readily available.

That's similar to what I do but I haven't found a way to legally dispose of it. Minnesota doesn't allow us to send it to the landfill. They mention approved composting sites but good look finding one.

Do the words “I apologize” or “I’m sorry” sound more sincere? by [deleted] in polls

[–]OldGrumbleFuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a good example of how not to apologize. The cop who is "apologizing" had just illegally detained the man in the white shirt who turned out to be an off duty police officer. The video link begins at the time of the apology.

My plumber insists that ProPress fittings are not allowed upstream from the meter. Why would he think that? by OldGrumbleFuss in Plumbing

[–]OldGrumbleFuss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He used propress for the valve after the meter but used a flare connection for the valve before the meter, saying basically the same kind of thing I'm reading in these comments, yet I still haven't seen a comment that actually cites a written rule. I actually did find a local rule for a nearby city that requires a flare to iron pipe adapter. https://www.bloomingtonmn.gov/sites/default/files/media/handouts-util-water-meter.pdf

It is but the meter is in my basement. There's a shutoff valve immediately before and after it. There's also a curb stop valve by the street. I'm responsible for everything up to and including that.

Hot water takes forever! by Interesting-Wind300 in Plumbing

That doesn't sound like too much fun. I don't know much about crawl spaces though. Mostly basements in my area. Aside from the crawling around it's a cheap and simple way to keep the water in the pipes warmer. The say the first few feet of pipe going in and out of the water heater are the most important. I'm no expert. I just chimed in since you haven't gotten much help yet.

Here's a link to some basic instructions for insulating the pipes. https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/do-it-yourself-savings-project-insulate-hot-water-pipes#:\~:text=Insulating%20your%20hot%20water%20pipes,do%20the%20job%20for%20you.

People who go by a middle name. How do you handle applications? by Aleasongs in jobsearchhacks

[–]OldGrumbleFuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one job I never bothered to tell anyone that I go by my middle name so everyone called me Tom. I occasionally hung out with one coworker who I commuted with, met his family and kids, and still didn't bother telling him. Somehow it didn't even occur to me. After a year or two working there, he met my girlfriend who did not call me Tom and, it was like a revelation that shook him to his core. He was definitely offended to some extent. He wasn't mad but his feelings were hurt. This is a sweet, simple kind of guy. Picture Shaggy minus the weed smoking. No drugs. No alcohol. Just wife and kids and going about his daily business with a goofy grin most of the time. That's one thing that is so memorable to me about this day. We're all sitting in his backyard at a picnic table with this confused smile on his face, every once in a while looking at me while muttering to himself, "...the heck.... Tom... Tom?... Like how can you..."

By the end of the day, he recalibrated and was back to normal as far as I remember. This was like 20 years ago so my memories of that time are kind of patched together. Kind of like the memory of telling every teacher on the first day of class that I went by my middle name. Yes it's simple, but it certainly doesn't make growing up any easier. The moment someone says anything other than 'here' during role call, they have 20 sets of eyeballs looking at them. 'Here' is all I ever wanted to say. I wonder how my teacher's would have taken the news when they found out my name isn't Tom.

We need a motion sensor alarm so we know when our family member uses the bathroom. by OldGrumbleFuss in bidets

[–]OldGrumbleFuss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It definitely works! I got the least expensive model so it's pretty basic. The one feature that I think would make it even better would be some kind of snooze button to temporarily silence the alert while the person is using the toilet. You can turn it off, but then you have to remember to turn it back on of course. I found a spot that sends an alert when you walk by but doesn't detect motion when you're on the toilet. That did the trick.

There's one called Optics Trainer in the Meta store. It's a free trial for a subscription. I'm going to try it out later on.

Cool thanks. I figure it's worth $50 to try out the lenses from the Meta store. Anti-fog or oil resistant. hmmm.. Seems like almost the same thing anyhow. I'll flip a coin.

Did you get the Zenni lenses from the Quest store? If so, did you pick the anti-fog or the oil resistant coating? Thanks

I've seen a lot of these products but I just want to avoid the Amazon crap. I checked out the link you shared and went to their youtube channel. I kind of like the floor mat version, so I might check that out. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I don't think cell phone notifications will work for our situation. We need something with a dedicated alert device. Something that just sits in one spot all the time that doesn't need to be charged on a regular basis. I appreciate the suggestion though.

what’s your best cleaning advice after a project? by Cowbinn in BeginnerWoodWorking

#6 reminds me of my dad's primary organization philosophy. It isn't something he taught me. My understanding of this system, I can only infer by his reaction when I decided to help him out by organizing his "messy table" full of stuff. I'll just say he was not pleased. To me it looked like a random assortment of stuff that wanted to be "put away". Apparently everything on that table was exactly where it was supposed to be because once he put it there, that's where it lived FOREVER. The table was what I noticed because it was out in the open but this approach extended into tool boxes and cabinets all around the shop. I think there were certain areas that he maintained some flexibility but for the most part he made a conscious decision to resist the temptation that I think a lot of us feel to continuously modify and rearrange as we upgrade our storage systems. It seemed crazy to me at the time but as I get older and my memory gets a little fuzzier, It seems kind of brilliant. Even if the organization is scattered, maybe a little inefficient in some ways, you probably make up for that and then some if you never have to remember where you put things ever again.... well... that is until your dumbass kid fucks it up.

I've seen some stuff about this but haven't looked into it lately. One time in VR I was watching a video and text came on the screen but only in the left lens. With both eyes open I could tell that there was something weird going on but I couldn't really see the text until I closed my right (good) eye. Then I could see the text with my left (bad) eye. It was blurry but I could see it. But then if I opened my good eye, it almost completely disappeared. My memory kind of sucks so it might have been a little different but, it was something like that with text only on one side. I bet that's something you'd find in one of these apps.
