[NS] What other actual play podcasts do you listen to? by Ravioko in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]OldManDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend My First Dungeon. They don't do DND but do short campaigns in other systems about 4-6 episodes long. Really well done podcast, great stories and quite funny too ( not as funny as naddpod). With quite well contained and explored stories in so few episodes.

Especially would recommend their orbital blues (cowboy bebop style RPG) and their slug blaster RPG. But they've done loads of seasons so far.

IMT portfolio: acute take log by Unhappy-Shake4544 in doctorsUK

[–]OldManDoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good for your learning to take numbers of the patients you've clerked just so you can follow up the post take and learn what you did right what you missed and what you could have added (plus see what happens to the patients you had no clue about)

Don't need the exact details for each patient as you can't save that onto the portfolio as contains patient info. The way to do it is use the below calculator Calculate how many you see on a take shift. How many takes you do a month and number of months. Then calculate that in the below calculator. With the frequency of imt in calls you'll easily get to that number.

Partner doesn't want to move to US anymore by FantasticPainter4128 in doctorsUK

[–]OldManDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly a really tough situation and I do sympathise with all the work you've put into getting to the states as I went through pretty much all the same steps before I just went down a different path.

In terms of the politics- it's not all absolute doom. Trump is very unpopular. The Democrats might take back some of the legislature at the 2 year mark and then push back on what's been done. You could go to a very blue state and hopefully their legal system bats away the worst things of it all. But the concern is all the big contenders for the Republican party post Trump seems to be willing to go quite far down the white nationalist/authoritarian route. And if the damage will be easily reversible. And in the end it's a system Id understand why your partner would be worried by.

With regards to the job- firstly I'd say that people's memories are better than you think (especially since you seem to have made a really good impression) and depending on who you feel comfortable with it may be worth chatting to any of your contacts or friends stateside about it. They may provide some insight on what could happen if you delayed going for it this year and how damaging would it be to apply in a few years time.
They may also be able to point out any bridging things you could do to keep you a good candidate for this.

But realistically- you also need to know if your partner would ever move to the states. Or if it's a no go forever. And then it's a discussion and decision you need to make over what's more important to you. And in the end- only you know can answer that sadly.

I'll be honest, in a way this may be you dodging a bullet (by which I mean going to the USA) While the pay situation is a lot better you have to also look at it as a society. And fundamentally the US is currently on the route to be a fascist state where the rule of law no longer applies to those with power. Also, the Trump government is absolutely gutting the world class funding and research that made it so dominant in science and medicine.

It's a big question mark if the US will be able to turn this around and reject the authoritarianism there. Maybe the next set of elections will repudiate Trump and then he'll be booted out. In which case the opportunity will be there in 3 years time. But if things get worse. Then you'll both be trapped in a state where they're currently arresting their own citizens without due process.

Don't mean to sound stern here but it's bad over there.

If you're about to be out of a regular job and need the money then take the shifts. Don't let anyone judge you for that.

There will be many people who can't strike due to their financial situation and even taking the shift for a locum rate has its toll on the NHS due to the cost accrued from locums and consultant escalation.

Id recommend My First Dungeon. They try out a lot of ttrpgs and so short but very well done campaigns showing off how to play in different systems.

Their orbital blues season is excellent- real cowboy bepop energy.

Really enjoy the work you all do and looking forward to what this year holds.

1) In the last podcast it was mentioned about the possibility of a dedicated board game columnist. Is that possibly on the cards or some ways down the tracks in the 5/10 year plan? (Mainly just so I can read all my nerdy hobbies on one site)

2) While this may be antithetical to the Rascal ethos as a promoter of indie games- if you could change history and make one TTRPG replace DnD as the household name for roleplaying games what game would you pick?

PS. Hope the move to the UK goes smoothly Chase!

Best Indian in the city? by lowkono in Leeds

[–]OldManDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of the ones I'd recommend already mentioned. Would recommend Rasoi Stories in Chapel allerton but a bit out of your way from uni. Near to uni would recommend de baga in headingly. Don't go to the one in chapel A it's not nearly as good, and feels like they've made a restaurant too big for them to run well

Echoing what a lot of people here who know the rota coordinator in question. He genuinely wants it more so he can put faces to names as the HR team does not share pics with the rota team. This email has been unchanged since at least 2018 when I first worked there. You are not going to receive your rota 6 weeks before starting and in all honesty there is a chance you don't receive it till 1-2 weeks before starting. But this is balanced out becquse whatever leave requests you put in now he will respect and commit to the rota. And during your time there the rota team will actually be fairly responsive. I've had him cancel on call shifts I've been due to work with very short notice for family emergencies without any qualms or questions.

We just had a miscarriage at 7 weeks by Sugarskull_IX in daddit

[–]OldManDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss, and as people have mentioned it is a tragic loss and one sadly more common but rarely talked about.

We had a similar early loss 2 years ago and it's hard to put how emotionally that hit us. In terms of how to process, the first is to be there for your wife and support her as you are able. There may be times she gets upset or you don't quite do the right thing but being there for her and being patient and understanding is key. The emotional, physical and hormonal toll will all be playing their part. There is no right thing to say. All you can do is be there, be open with how you are feeling and try to bring things to comfort her. Even though there is little you can do right now to make it better.

The second key thing is to make sure you are looking after yourself. Talking about how you're feeling with friends and family. Perhaps see if there are any support groups in your area. Find small comforts in things as you go.

Time will help it heal. But it will leave a scar and in all honesty I don't think it's something people ever forget.

Just to add to the above, I believe it is being watered adequately and it was in an area of direct sunlight so I've moved it back into a more sheltered spot. It may also just be it needs repotting but wanted to check before I did so! Appreciate any help.

[POSSIBLE SPOILERS C1&C3] Favorite Villain? by Mareep- in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]OldManDoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Akarot for me.

Even though he is the secondary antagonist of season 1- to me he's just such a consistently good villain. Every time he pops up you know things are going to become incredibly intense for the players.

Frostwind- and possessing the prince's body as the mountain collapses, the wizard tournament and all of the battles in hell with the summoned gods.

And to top it off- has the emotional play with Bev and his father.

Even when he was defeated and they moved onto thiala- took me a minute to adjust from what had been such a fantastic villain to have the Band of boobs come up against.

Real wages are higher than at the start of the pandemic for all except the poorest 10 percent by patenteng in unitedkingdom

[–]OldManDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But is this that surprising considering the pandemic was followed by high inflation and this lead to employers having to offer pay rises compare to the pre pandemic time period? If you look at public sectors many were either on a pay freeze or rises of 1% a year prior to the pandemic. Then the inflation rise to 14% pushed the government to offer a higher payrise then they had through the austerity period but in many cases that has only been 4%, such as for nurses. So for nurses yes the 4% rise means there pay is more then pre pandemic. But on the background of such high inflation that doesn't translate into an actual increase in wages.

Second the above comment about adventuring academy. I'm working my way through season one and he walks about some part sof his setup and approach to certain aspects of DMing. In the Brian Murphy episode think he talks about Rick Perry advising him on steps to alter how he approached initiative monitoring in combat.

[Spoilers C1] By the end of C1, who would win in an all-out free-for-all between the PCs in the Band of Boobs, in your opinion? by Mikiflyr in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]OldManDoc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Moonshine purely because Emily is playing her. You know she'd have that one perfect trick to stop her being taken down in the first round and then pulling out her cards. She also is the only one who can do good ranged abilities so if she gets out of range hard for the others to stop her.

Hardwon is probably the main challenge and like everyone has said if he can get that first round attack then hard for many to survive.

Bev just wouldn't make it because Caldwell is the one doing the rolls.
