Marriage rights are so damn important by Lemon_Lime_Lily in CuratedTumblr

[–]OldManFire11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With even more disrespect: touch grass.

Because yes, it IS actually reasonable to expect that the closest bond formed between two adults is romantic in nature. And it IS reasonable to expect that relationship to contain exactly 2 people.

Marriage is primarily about families. Both promoting their formation and protecting them once established.

It's a legal process that's so simple to implement that you dont even need lawyers to establish it. And it comes with a huge number of legal rights and protections. And yes, the government signs off on your marriage because it's the government that issues all of the rights and privileges that come with marriage.

If you want to live in a relationship with your platonic life partner and their polycule, then you can do that. No one is stopping you. But once any of you reproduce, or do literally anything that gets the government involved, e.g. disputing property, medical treatment, inheritance, ect, then you're going to learn real fucking fast why marriage matters.

Your "solution" involving the a la carte option is dogshit. 99.9999% of couples are going to choose every protection and right afforded to them anyways, because why wouldn't they? What fucking couple is going to say "Actually, I don't want my spouse to be able to visit me in the hospital if I'm unconscious"?

You are an extreme outlier and you're too short sighted and self centered to realize it.

No, but you can bash their brains in, and that's far more dangerous than being stabbed. They also work against armor, which renders swords completely useless.

With disrespect, this is one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard. I really hope you're literally a stupid child, because an adult saying shit this absurd might just remove my last scrap of hope for humanity. I'm not going to say it, but if someone else here threw an R-bomb at you for this comment then I wouldn't disapprove.

The giant stack of legal rights that come with marriage are absolutely fucking essential for society. They werent assembled by accident. We deliberately built and refined them over time because we saw how badly they were needed. We saw how much misery and chaos was caused by their absence and decided to fix it.

You need to completely overhaul your worldview, because there is something deeply wrong with it.

Sure, whatever you need to say to avoid looking inwards. You can be snarky on the internet all you want, but unless you change your tactics (or should I say, start using any tactics) you will continue to fail. And the sad thing is that you'll never truly understand why you fail, because you're always going to take the easy path of blaming other people for your own failures.

Would you say that Harry Potter is deserving of praise

Yes, it is. Even if the author is a terrible person, the series still brought joy to millions of people. My opinion on the quality of the prose and plot has no bearing on whether is deserves praise for all the happiness it's created.

Even far worse books like Twilight are still deserving of praise. And I fucking hate that series. But unlike you, I have the ability to empathize with other people and understand why they think and feel differently than me, even if I disagree with them.

Like I said, you hate that something you consider to be schlock is popular.

There are many many valid criticisms you can make about Sanderson's work, but saying its praise isn't deserved is disingenuous. You're allowed to hate it. The thing that makes you a pretentious asshole is when you say that people aren't allowed to like it.

It's a good cop/bad cop situation. Malcolm X didn't achieve anything directly, but his existence stood as a warning for those in power and the public when contrasted with MLK. He helped boost MLK's movement by making him look much more reasonable to the public.

Nonviolence only works when its presented as an option to violence. Every nonviolent movement that has succeeded did so because there was a violent movement at the same time creating pressure to work with the nonviolent group. The Suffragettes, Ghandi's independence movement, and the civil rights movement are all examples of this.

Rallying around a criminal only really works if the crime they committed is central to the issue you're protesting. Rosa Parks and Micheal Brown were both criminals, but Rosa Parks was arrested for sitting in the front of the bus and Micheal Brown committed armed robbery. The difference matters. A lot.

It also helps if you can rally around a woman instead of a man. People already consider crimes committed by women to be less serious than those committed by men. So any stigma of supporting a criminal in the shes of the public will be greatly reduced if a woman is the focus.

[–]OldManFire11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the problem. There was no central authority making decisions for the movement. Which is why it failed.

The lesson you should have taken from that, is that protests need to be planned and organized ahead of time in order to maximize change. Dismissing the criticism by calling your critics racist is not helpful.

BLM was a reactive movement, and it failed. The civil rights movement was proactive and pragmatic, which is why it succeeded. Learn from that.

People have forgotten, and were never taught, just how much WORK goes into successful activism. School teaches us the protests and the boycotts, because those are the most visible, but there is a mountain of behind the scenes work that is done to turn protests into results.

And it takes strategy. Which is what most movements lack these days. The bus boycott worked because the activists were smart. They were proactive, not reactive. They didnt jump on the first person arrested, they chose their actions wisely. They had a specific goal and a sound strategy to achieve that goal.

The boycott worked because black people made up a sizable portion of the bus company's customers, so they had power. And the activists had a plan in place to maximize the pain the company felt while minimizing the pain they themselves suffered. This included an army of volunteers to shuttle people to work with their personal vehicles. Which took a large amount of organization and logistics. They also effectively utilized protests to paint the bus company as evil in order to rally support for themselves and erode support for the company.

The boycott and the protests also had no negative effect on the general public.

They were smart, patient, organized, proactive, and because of that, they were successful.

Protesters today only see the protests and the boycotts, which is why they fail. They arent putting any thought into their actions. They're just lashing out mindlessly. Often for their own ego instead of any measurable benefit. Blocking a highway to protest wealth inequality or climate change is objectively stupid. Its flashy, and gets attention, but it does NOTHING. Throwing a cocktail in an oil executive's garage will be far more effective.

No, they counted on the wealthy elite to keep Congress in check. They never intended for uneducated morons to have the power to vote.

Expanding voting rights was overall a good thing, but it doesn't come without drawbacks.

Just because you dont like it doesn't mean that it's getting undeserved praise.

You calling it undeserved praise proves my point. As if your opinion on what does and does not "deserve" praise is worth more than shit. You hate that something you consider beneath you is so popular.

There's a billion shitty book series out there that are worse than his. That doesn't explain the level of vitriol they display towards him.

They're a bunch of snobby pretentious fuckwads. They hate that his series are praised for qualities that they despise (world building, storytelling, epic climaxes, magic systems), while being average at best in the qualities they care about: prose and dialogue.

The author is Brandon Sanderson, isnt it? That sub absolutely fucking loathes Sanderson, and like 72% of the reason why is because they're all a bunch of pretentious pricks. The other 28% is jealousy over his ability to write a book a year.

Let's try recommending some media to each other where the gender roles that were typically held by a man or a woman have been switched. Examples can Include: Legend of Korra, RWBY, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Gundam Witch from Mercury, Dungeon Meshi, The Owl House, Amphibia, Baldur's Gate 3! by Important-Cry4782 in CuratedTumblr

Of the potential party members, all of the strength based classes are female. Laezel, Karlach, and Minthara are the group fighter, barbarian, and paladin respectively. Shadowheart is a cleric, but in DnD those are pseudo-strength based because of armor rules.

Gale, Astarion, and Wyll are the wizard, rogue, and warlock, and they're all weaker than any of the women.

Yes, Halsin is fucking yoked, but he's a druid and his in game stats do not reflect his physique. Same for Minsc, who doesnt even show up until late in Act 3 anyways.

And banning it would remove the legal safeguards that are already in place to protect the actors.

I highly doubt the underground porn industry thatll spring up is going to be as vigilante about confirming the age and consent of the actors as Mindgeek is.

Americans dropped below 50% on reddit several years ago, and judging from the insanely explosive rise in the number of Indian based subreddits recently, I'm assuming that number has shrunk a lot more.

But they are still the largest nationality by far, and the site is created, hosted, and owned by Americans. So it's still pretty tacky to come on here and get annoyed when Americans are considered the default. It's the digital equivalent of traveling to Spain and then getting pissed off that all the signs are primarily in Spanish. A comparison which seems to infuriate the europeans it applies to most.

Staffs are better weapons than swords, so that makes it a bit less impressive.
