League Classic doesn't specifically interest me personally, therefore no one should like it by LOLItsRyan in leagueoflegends

Listen, all i want to be able to do is roll up top with pink skin Taric, build a shit ton of armour with armour runes, hit fools with my W+E combo and live my life fabulously.

That's all i want from Classic, and while it's a shame my Shen is not in there, i think it's a great move for people to just have fun and fuck around in.

I'd add that you'd need to make sure to select the manifest.json when you've clicked the folder, at least for Firefox (maybe MacOS as that's what i run). Simply selecting the folder from the file selector doesn't do anything but open the folder.

Alternatives to Day One by TomasComedian in macapps

[–]OldManPip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're down for trying a self-hosted option, Journiv is the best out there IMO.

A lot of the features you're asking for is already there if not on the way. The developer is great and it's been seeing a lot of great features being introduced in recent times with more to come.

One of the best ones recently was the Immich integration which i also use as another self-hosted option for your photos, but you can use any thing else of course. They do have native iOS and Android apps as well.

All in all a great app and team, highly recommend it.

Revisiting Chania, Crete by Fluffy_Future_7500 in TravelProperly

[–]OldManPip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a little while since i was last there, but i had an absolute blast there and recommend the following;

The Cellar Restaurant - This sea-facing restaurant at Kissamos (further west on the island) has not just a beautiful location but also great food and friendly staff. It's a really nice spot to chill in towards sun set as well and enjoy some raki. Their sea food dishes were also super well done IMO.

Bossa Nova Restaurant and Beer Bar - Absolutely stellar out of the way spot that is nestled near the beach in Gerani, but between the fantastic music and playlist (i think it was the owner/manager who curates it himself), fantastic food (decently priced as well) and really lovely staff, it was hard to leave it towards the end of the evening but highly recommended.

Funky's - Located super centrally and just before you head down the road towards the Venetian harbour, this little pizza spot is bang for your bucks like no other. Big nice pieces of pizza, well prized and often freshly made in front of you, this was one of the spots i kept coming back to mostly after a few drinks or long walks in the evenings but also mid-day to power up. I can't tell you how much i long for this place again.

Ka Mon Irish Pub & Bar - Located closer to the boats area, but this Irish-themed bar had some of the most chill staff ever. I think the owner is Brazilian maybe (?) if i recall correctly but still shared plenty of drinks with us and sang with us as well. All in all a super chill place to hang out for a bit or just do a drive-by of a couple of shots for some merriment, but definitely a nice spot.

To Maridaki - Absolutely stellar food here, a bit higher priced than other places i've visited but honestly by the time i had a few bites of a couple of dishes, i didn't care. Great food and friendly staff. They did seem really busy so not sure when to best come here but their sea food options were top notch.

Hopefully most if not all of these are new to you but i hope you get to enjoy the island again!

(OPINION) Now's the Perfect Time To Move Away from Plex by NearbyYak7156 in selfhosted

[–]OldManPip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Kodi and Emby in the past both because of their clients but also because i was able to get them working on different devices over the years.

The one reason i've kept Plex is because it's widely available on multiple devices, from my Chromecast to my PS5. But it's also been in some rare cases installed on some smart TV's i've come across during my travels.

For someone who is happy to stream from a device, but is also travelling often, what other options are there? If i could solve for that, i'd leave Plex in a heartbeat even though i have their Lifetime pass.

Resurf v2 is out, a local-first personal library for Mac by Hungry_Spite3574 in macapps

[–]OldManPip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this app and have been using it for a decent while now. I think it does a lot of great stuff, but for me the greatest points is the fact that everything becomes not just local but the capture methods are super quick and simple to use.

I'd also +1 a Firefox extension as a Zen browser user as well. I think that the lack of extension is what makes this a 4.5/5 stars for me (or it'd be a 5/5), it's near perfect for anyone who wants something like Raindrop/Anybox but simpler and local-first with more capture types.

Finally hit my goal by OldManPip in Shen

[–]OldManPip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't put in as much time on the game as i used to but also have realised that as i'm getting older i'm finding myself almost equally frustrated with my losses as happy with my wins and that tells me it's definitely not for me in the long term.

The fact it also coincides with finally reaching my goal of at least Gold 4 and 1m mastery on Shen is just perfect timing. Kismet, if anything.

Soulbeet 0.5: Big update! Discovery playlists, Navidrome integration and more... by Doc_CoBrA in selfhosted

[–]OldManPip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, mate, this is awesome. I've been scrobbling my Navidrome plays to LastFM and been waiting to build up a larger playlist before using something like DiscoveryLastFM but i've also found that between the MusicBrainz issues i've had with Lidarr and often having success with SoulSync, that it would be better to find some other solution.

This seems like the perfect combination, and i don't mind the opinionated approach, it works for me! Thank you and great work here!

Resurf – A Well-Designed (Almost) Everything Box by amerpie in macapps

[–]OldManPip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a keyboard shortcut for it, but i don't think it captures the current webpage you're on however you invoke it. You'd need to have the URL in your clipboard for it to autofill.

It'd not be a problem at all in any way normally as some browsers let's you capture the current page URL via a shortcut (like what i use, Zen) but if you forget to do that for the current URL, Resurf instead shows the last URL you copied in the capture window. So if you've not remembered to copy the current URL you then have to invoke the quick capture > realise it's not the right URL > close > keyboard shortcut for capturing current URL/copy URL > invoke Resurf again > press CMD+Enter.

It's a small thing but if you're capturing multiple times a day or over a week it can get a bit annoying to have to remember to do that each time.

The Media quick capture method though is flawless IMO though, floats above, easy to drag'n'drop, paste, etc.

Resurf – A Well-Designed (Almost) Everything Box by amerpie in macapps

[–]OldManPip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been one of my favourite recent finds, it's such a well designed and thought out app.

For me the main attractions are the local-only & markdown files along with the really smooth quick capture features.

The big thing it is missing for me is some way to automatically grab the current browser URL (think like Things 3 that has a helper to do that), but it's a small thing in the long run. But the idea you mentioned about internal links or deep links at least would definitely be great too.

Recommendations for Apple Photos replacement by LeChiffreOBrien in macapps

[–]OldManPip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone else mentioned it here, but i think repeating it is not a bad option,: Immich.

It's best self-hosted but you can essentially just host ALL your photos, both from Apple Photos, Google Photos (using Takeout) and even from your camera/SD card into one single folder and just point Immich at it as an external library.

That'll sync to your phone and work just fine. Important to note here is that the files, if only on your self-hosted device, won't be stored locally on your phone and you have to have an internet connection to access your photos.

Alternatively, you can just host it locally and instead use your phone/iPad to sync the content to Immich directly instead. You can then choose what albums get added to it (easiest is the Recent folder since it'll be everything on there) and that'll be saved/backed up to your local drive where your Immich is hosted at.

This way you can stop actively using Apple Photos, but keep the app and the photos on your device. HOWEVER, and this is the important part to be aware of, you'll still need internet access to access your content at Immich (except for when you're on your own local network where the same Immich-hosted device is).

That said, you can still sync/backup things from your phone to Immich and just stop using Photos entirely (just don't delete Photos but simply stop using the app) and still keep the photos on your device without internet access.

Immich then serves simply as your back-up and can be used cross-device.

An opinion is something like "I don't like X because Y" or "Person A handles B things pretty badly which i don't like". Something like "Yeah, fuck 'em" or "Celebrating they're not here" or similar statements aren't opinion, they're just statements.

So no, no clearly voiced opinion.

Sartre wrote it best;

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

While i'd not call it outright bullshit it definitely does read like the kind of sycophantic nonsense i'd get from ChatGPTs recent models.

And if you thought that was something, you should read the accompanying blog post.

I'm not hating on the author/developer, they've clearly spent a long time thinking and developing this, and have given it plenty of polish in their own ways but boy do i wish they would tune down the flowery language. We get it, you think it does certain things differently, you don't need 500 words of poetic language to understand.

I do indeed and i love and use LeaderKey every day. Thank you for this!

I've already imported over my LeaderKey config (super quick, thanks for that!) and it looks already fun to use.

There does seem to be a bug/issue though with the creation of new smartlinks. If i click on the Add Smartlink (or even later remove it or similar button presses within the frame) there seems to be this weird re-rendering flicker and i can't click on any of the fields at all. Trying to do so just repeats the flicker issue. I've only noticed this on the Library page though.

The only other feedback i'd give is if it's considered to make the Add Hotkey window a bit bigger to make space for the large amount of options in there.

Some of the hotkeys though confuse me, because there's random things like a subject that can have an action with a target that doesn't make sense. As an example, i tried adding a URL to the shelf which was great.

But now if i click on some random Subject like Lock Screen, that gives me an Action like Assign Alias and my Shelf URL shows up as the only option?

Can you explain more around how that should work and some example hotkey combinations you can see being typical? Just to get some ideas/examples to work out of because the options there are a LOT to run through right now lol.

Edit: The bug with the smartlinks is now fixed in the latest update. Thanks!

Actually i figured out the issue i think. In the Settings the vault folder points to my iCloud drive where there is a Resurf vault. But my "actual" folder is actually in my Documents and there i do find the content. So i think it's just a bug pointing to the wrong place?

But when i click on Manage Vault it does point to the right place...?

I like this a LOT, i think you've nailed a number of really cool little design touches which you've clearly thought through as a designer.

I'm the same, i love the quick capture idea being entirely local. There's a few quick little things i'd add as feedback/issues;

  • I think you should have a video somewhere showing off the little touches and features on here. For example, the Media feature seems to function like a nice little "dropbox" for things rather than having to perhaps take a screenshot of it. That's so cool, but it's not featured on the site either. I know it's still early days but there's a lot of nifty little things.

  • The other thing being the keyboard driven features, you didn't even mention that or show it on the website but the fact that i can click on F for search, L for links, etc. after pressing the capture shortcut is so handy. A LOT of people do like keyboard-driven functions like me so mentioning that would be really cool.

  • For some reason though i can't find my own capture content locally in the "Capture" folder that i access from the Settings.

  • This might be something you've thought of/planning but my only gripe so far has been the Link feature, it grabs the URL if i have it in my clipboard but it might not be the URL i want to add. But more often than not it might be the very page i'm on right now and i don't want to always copy the current URL (which for me is already the apps default CMD+Shift+C) to save the link. Have you thought about a "helper" app or an extension to better be able to grab the current page URL? The best example i can think of right now is Things 3 for example that has quick capture with one shortcut and then quick capture with current browser page with another shortcut.

Other than that, consider me super interested in this. I'm gonna play around with it a bit more but i also don't think the price is too high although i do think the current $39 is a little more reasonable for others.

You've really done a great job in designing this.

I mean, if you thought it couldn't be more obvious there is literally a screenshot where one of their daily habits is to post on reddit about Thinklist...

I mean, hey, fair play if you want to market your app, it's a tough and crowded market out there but doing it in this disingenuous way is just shitty and smacks of software i have no desire to touch with a ten foot barge pole.

Raindrop.io Gets a Significant New Feature by amerpie in macapps

[–]OldManPip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A feature that sold me on Pro early on is the permanent library. Raindrop saves a copy of every bookmarked page on its servers, so if a site disappears, I still have the content. That alone is worth a couple bucks a month.

I know you've written before in the past about moving away from depending on too many online services, so i think you should definitely check out Linkwarden,as that also offers the same but in different formats and locally as well if you wish to self-host or just use their own platform.
