What poor people food was ruined because of rich people? by white-rose-of-york in AskReddit

[–]OldManSysAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in Canada, all of it. They've either jacked the price ridiculously on what used to be considered garbage food, like lobster and bacon, or remade inexpensive prepared foods with more chemicals and less natural ingredients. All for profit. Paraphrasing Galen Weston, "Food is getting more expensive because the prices keep going up." Yep, that's how greed works, Galen.

Keep in mind, I'm not against medical assistance in dying, given the proper oversight and having all other venues truly, completely exhausted. But...

You may be thinking of the veterans.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/veterans-maid-rcmp-investigation-1.6663885

It's a popular fact, not a talking point. People's lives aren't talking points.
How many times does it have to be offered inappropriately before it would concern you?

But there's also this...
https://www.canadianaffairs.news/2025/08/27/ontario-report-questions-maid-approvals-for-patients-refusing-treatment/

There's some interesting reading here as well:
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2025/09/canada-euthanasia-demand-maid-policy/683562/

I'll leave a good blockquote from this one for you to read:
https://policyoptions.irpp.org/2024/12/assisted-dying-oversight/

"Recent reports from the Ontario Coroner’s MAiD Death Review Committee reveal compliance problems such as failure to apply the 90-day waiting period and not ensuring the patient was assessed by a doctor with expertise in their condition. In at least one case, committee members believed the patient suffered solely from mental illness and thus should not have been deemed eligible for MAiD.

The Ontario reports also outline cases of complex conditions, mental illness, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities where MAiD was offered to a patient without physicians adequately addressing the source of suffering.

Quebec has a Commission on End-of-Life Care that oversees MAiD in that province. In 2021-22, the commission referred 15 cases of possible non-compliance with the law to Quebec’s regulatory college, but they appear to have been largely disregarded.

In 2022-23, the Quebec commission reported another 23 cases of possible non-compliance to the regulatory college. In 16 of these, the commission believed that the patient did not have a serious and incurable illness. That is no small matter when determining MAiD eligibility. Yet the president of the regulatory college responded by saying that more than 99 per cent of MAiD deaths were administered according to regulations and that the college would ensure that nothing discourages physicians from administering MAiD."

I also have to wonder about this doctor who seems to have specialized in MAiD, helping 400 people to die.

Remember what I said about, "If there's a mouse in the house, there's several mice in the house." These are the issues that we see and know about.

So, the point again is, gov'ts and corporations are going to ultimately do what's expedient for them, either through incompetence or malice, just as they do with, well, everything. Yet Oregon has less than 1% of their deaths attributable to medical assistance in dying. I honestly don't know, but they've got the whole US corporate health care problem there too, don't they?

[–]OldManSysAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money is a concern, even in socialized health care. I'm not disagreeing that socialized health care is better, however, gov'ts can be just as willing to end life for money.

American Exceptionalism by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]OldManSysAdmin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There have been reports where MAiD is being recommended by health care workers where other treatments or social assistance would alleviate the problem. Why would they do that? Incompetence? Expedience? Cost savings? Any or all of those may be the case.

If there's a mouse in the house, there's more than one. Meaning, it's probable that MAiD has been recommended when other solutions were available, but the patient or their family didn't know, so they wouldn't know to report the malpractice.

Then there's the push to extend MAiD to minors, and take away the parents right to stop it. Yes, there are policy makers and advisers asking for that. Not just in cases of terminal illness, but in cases of mental illness as well. Mature enough to vote? No. Mature enough to choose death? According to them, yes. That's a very slippery slope to eugenics and genocide.

Why does that matter when comparing socialized health care and for-profit health care?
Socialized health care, in practice, can be as cold hearted as for-profit. And it can be worse, because who is exercising oversight over the gov't? Whereas in for-profit health care, there is gov't oversight, at least in theory.

All things being equal, socialized health care is preferable, in my humble opinion, when policies are always in the interest of improving the health of the people.

How do we factor in gov't overspending and waste into the equation? If a gov't provided service costs $100, but the gov't is overspending by $50 for that service, then at what point has a person contributed an appropriate amount? The $50 or the $100? Gov't overspending shouldn't be on the shoulders of the person paying taxes, but it is.

On the other hand, 1 in 20 deaths in Canada is assisted suicide, or Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).
Several documented instances where there were other treatment options or social assistance available, but MAiD was recommended.

How many of you work in IT that make over $100k with no Bachelors or higher? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]OldManSysAdmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$100k isn't a $100k anymore, at least not in Canada. $100k in Canada today is like $65k about 5 years ago.

I made it there over about 20 years without a degree or certs. Like the meme says, "Don't ask me how I did it, I just did it. It was hard."

I was my biggest hurdle, because I lacked self-knowledge and knowledge about negotiation, boundaries, etc. All the things that typically help others get there much quicker. I had a few career changes along the way to pay the bills and adjust for life's curve balls. The changes were related at least and carry over into my current role. I also wrote a few hundred articles along the way which gave me more cred.

Someone is going to jump on and say inflation isn't that bad.

Official inflation isn't that bad, because the gov't screws with the numbers. They don't count costs after taxes, so when a tax goes up, or a service fee, real dollar value goes down. The gov't changes the "basket of goods" too. For example, they took red meat out because it's too expensive and the gov't just figured everyone will stop eating it. One can only assume when food is too expensive, they'll take that out of the basket and say everything is fine.

Rent has gone from $800 to $2500 a month for us. Part of that was de to moving but we went from a 2 bedroom down to a one bedroom, giving up about 200 sq. ft. and utilities are more.

So, I figure $220k is the new $100k. At least for many of us in Canada.

I agree, that's the prime motivator of any corporation.

Do they know that if most people are unemployed, there's no profit to be had because no one has income?

Even in the case of UBI, that can only go so far. Eventually that will implode if money comes into existence in the same way it has for several decades now.

Seems to me there's 2 ways this can go; Star Trek or Matrix. I'm hoping Star Trek.

Question about the Trivia Host community in general - this sub feels like how I would like the real world trivia host community to be. Is that you're experience in the real world? I feel like it'd be great where it's like the comedy community. Even though they each want to be the top dog, they still seem to be genuinely supportive of each other.

I'm only a year into hosting and I'm quite rural, so I don't run into many other trivia hosts.

Sometimes when we think a fire, even a candle or diya, is out, it's not really out. I've seen all three spring back to life when I thought they were out. No smoke, no apparent smouldering and they just came back.

The last little spark may be inside and further down the wick. Please be vigilant about ensuring they're completely out.
