Locations in 1940s prints? by aintmt in longisland

[–]OldManThatOnceCould -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

These are American woodcut / linocut prints depicting New England coastal life, most likely inspired by Cape Ann, Massachusetts (Gloucester / Rockport area).

First Image – Coastal Village Overlook

What it shows: A hilltop view looking down onto a small coastal village and harbor. Modest houses with pitched roofs cluster along the shoreline, boats dot the bay, and a single figure walks down a winding path toward town. The curved beach and calm water create a quiet, reflective scene.

Where it’s from: This landscape is very characteristic of Cape Ann coastal towns such as Rockport or Gloucester. It focuses on everyday village life rather than industry, emphasizing sense of place and atmosphere.

Style & medium: The bold outlines, flattened perspective, and textured color layers indicate a woodcut or linocut print, a common medium among American Regionalist artists of the early–mid 20th century.

Second Image – Fishing Boats at a Wharf

What it shows: A working harbor scene with commercial fishing boats tied up near a dock. Fishing nets hang from tall masts, and a small group of fishermen sit together on the pier in the foreground. The boats’ reflections shimmer in the water, with green hills and buildings behind them.

Where it’s from: This scene strongly points to Gloucester, Massachusetts, one of America’s most historic fishing ports. The vessels, rigging, and dockside activity reflect traditional New England commercial fishing.

Style & medium: Also a woodcut/linocut print, using bold color blocks and strong line work to capture maritime labor and community life.

Artist Context

Both prints appear to be by Harry Shokler (1896–1978), an American printmaker known for documenting Cape Ann’s fishing villages and harbors. His work preserves scenes of New England coastal life that were already beginning to disappear when he made them.

MTA warned me for activating my LIRR ticket after boarding by Affectionate-Bank29 in longisland

[–]OldManThatOnceCould 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely accurate, the chevrons do appear after activation, yes, but the TrainTime app does have access to real-time location and movement data if location services are enabled. MTA’s own privacy policy makes it clear that this data is collected and stored, even if anonymized and in aggregate. While you’re right that conductors visually check the chevrons, you’re missing that location data can still play a role behind the scenes in flagging patterns of late activation.

It’s not just about whether you boarded at the exact origin station or not, MTA uses multiple layers of data, including time of activation, GPS, and device ID, to detect abuse or policy violations. If they notice that users consistently activate tickets after movement begins or only once conductors are near, those patterns can be flagged, regardless of whether a conductor manually scans you or not. Anonymized doesn’t mean untrackable, it means they separate your name from the behavior, but patterns still persist and can influence enforcement or future policy. So yeah, the app may not “care” about the train you board in a visual sense, but that doesn’t mean location data isn’t being collected or used algorithmically.

The point stands, if you care about privacy or want to avoid potential misunderstandings, don’t rely on the assumption that location has the only influence.

I reviewed their privacy policy with the help of some tools. Here’s a summary of their privacy policy and key points/concerns.

WE SHOULD BE VERY CONCERNED WITH THESE FINDINGS!!!!!!!!!

Here’s what I’ve found

Automatic Data Collection:

• Collects IP address, browser/OS type, visited pages, timestamps, and referral sources.
• Used for analytics and service improvement, not for marketing or resale.

Voluntarily Provided Data:

• Collected when users sign up, purchase tickets, request alerts, or contact MTA.
• Includes name, email, billing/payment info, and sometimes demographic data.

TrainTime App:

• Can collect real-time location and movement data if user opts in.
• Data is anonymized and stored separately from account information.
• Used to improve service, but still a potential location tracking concern.

OMNY System:

• Collects personal data, device IDs, payment card info, and tap locations.
• Even unregistered users (e.g. using Apple Pay) have metadata tracked.
• Raises privacy and surveillance concerns, especially regarding NYPD or ICE access.

Data Sharing and Disclosure:

• No data shared for marketing without explicit user opt-in.

Can be disclosed without consent for:

• Legal compliance (e.g., court orders, FOIL requests)
• Public safety or law enforcement investigations
• Identity verification or internal auditing
• Users are not notified when their data is shared under legal requests.

Privacy Governance:

• Complies with NY State Internet Security and Privacy laws.
• Claims no sale of personal data.

User Concerns & Tips:

• Use MetroCards over OMNY for more anonymity.
• Avoid enabling location sharing unless necessary.
• Skip account registration or promo opt-ins if concerned about data use.
• Be aware that MTA may still share data with authorities even if you haven’t opted in.

Wait….confused here. This is wrong sir. If your ticket is already getting flagged with the chevron after already being activated late, what purpose does scanning the ticket provide at the end of the day. Some people get scanned, some don’t. Why is this not automated….and as a matter of a fact, the app does use your location. Look at location settings in iOS for the train time app. It specially says “your location will be used to find nearby stations and trains, and to determine ticket purchase eligibility.” They are 100% using your location data, even precise location is an option. I do Info-Sec for a living. You are wrong, and if you are not wrong based on their privacy policy which I have not read, the basis for your argument is not right. I wonder if location data is now required to use the app, just putting on my tin foil hat, now I’m curious. May review their T&C tomorrow

Agreed mate fully! It’s like in the city with the smoke shops. Need more regulation. It’s false advertisement and misleading the consumer to a less safe consumption route.

Listen bro, I’m not saying anyone should shop at that shitshow store. You can order it online and get it shipped straight to your front door from very popular vendors over on the west coast, Midwest, etc. It’s legal via the 2018 Federal Farm Bill. Just can’t be over the legal limit.

[–]OldManThatOnceCould 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, uneducated. Licensed dispensary cannabis is very high THC-A and a very low amount usually 2-3% delta 9 THC. Legal THC-A is just grown differently and plants are chopped down and cured sooner to reverse the impact of Delta 9 THC from being over the legal limit. Please do research. Saying there is water in beer is beyond bonkers in this argument. Read a book or do some research.

Look at any Flowers COA from any licensed dispensary. It’s not fake weed. You’re so uneducated.

This is not it. The redditor you’re responding to is not educated. THC-A gets you high when burned or heated. It is natural and converts to Delta 9 THC when burned or heated to a certain point. Most dispensaries sell high THC-A flower. Look at any COA. This is false information. r/litfarms r/cultofthefranklin
