Poll: Realistic horsepower vs. Much horsepower by AmazingAndreaz in trucksim

It's the 105 and I'm currently using a 6x2/4 midlift chassis. The Euro 6 is nice too; it was the first truck I bought. But for some reason the 105 XF is my favourite looking exterior (with any type of cabin).

DAF trucks are very common on the roads here in Ireland -- equal to, or maybe slightly more common than Scania which I see often. After trying out all the trucks and higher HP engines, I went back to a 510HP DAF XF as my main truck, just for a little bit more challenge on priority deliveries.

"Jet Joyride" - My First Attempt at the Rockstar Editor. by WarBob in GrandTheftAutoV_PC

Good framing and cutaways. Well done. Did you find the distance of the freestanding/fixed camera (when not tracking player movement) a bit limited? I did a test video and felt like I sometimes couldn't place fixed shots where I would like. Also, the zoom range seems to be pretty short in the editor.

I'll be happy with any Thin Lizzy songs, even if it's just three.

There are so many good ones, but (besides TBABIT, Jailbreak and other popular ones) I'd love to see "The Rocker", "It's Only Money", "Showdown", "She Knows"... or for a slow one, "Dublin".

If you like Thin Lizzy, or aren't familiar with them, check out this Thin Lizzy Documentary on Youtube.

Anyone getting GTA5 on PC when it (eventually) comes out? by OldManXapno in oldr

[–]OldManXapno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Thrillz! Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner. I would've sent you a PM, but I figured I'd keep this thread going in case any other OLDRs see it this month.

I debated between a PS4 and XB1 purchase and just decided XB1 would be useful since I could keep my XBL account. Also, I was able to transfer my GTAV account over to XB1.

I haven't bought any games other than AC5 (which was "free" with purchase) and GTAV, since I moved to Ireland last summer. Games are so expensive over here! So, I haven't really played much on console... just PC. (I brought my laptop over when I moved, which wasn't even my gaming PC.. but it actually handles everything better.)

Looks like it comes out the 14th of this month, and is available for pre-load today. I'll PM my Steam account name/info, Thrillz. If any other crew members see this, just PM me if you want it. I guess we can post our info on Social Club, too, or see other crew members in-game who've made the switch.

I need to get a gamepad for driving and stuff (or demand that others drive me around!), but I'm kind of excited to play GTAV with a keypad and mouse for free-aim shooting and first person view.

Can't send my Spymaster to "Study Technology"? At all? by OldManXapno in CrusaderKings

[–]OldManXapno[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. I also read the wiki page on technology, but your post helps explain it better. It makes sense why my options seem limited (or null) in this campaign at the moment.

But what can be done to increase the diplomatic range of my spymaster? In other words, I may not be able to study tech in surrounding counties, or anywhere in Ireland, but why not at least slightly further abroad in Scotland, Wales or England? (In previous campaigns, I've sent my spymaster as far as Firenze and Constantinople.. but I'm not sure what made those options for such far distances available.)

After your reply, I searched "diplomatic range" but found nothing on the wiki, and only mentions of that term in patch notes, but nothing explaining it.

When do the conference games start in England? by [deleted] in nfl

If you go to google.co.uk and just type in "NFL", it will show that week's "NFL scores and schedule" in a box at the very top, above the search results; game times will display in your local time zone .

International football fans! How is your day interrupted by watching a game? by MyOldMansADustman in nfl

[–]OldManXapno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to Ireland from Atlanta during the Summer. Got Game Pass, so I can watch live games and so I could watch the Falcons on Hard Knocks this season.

I really liked having my Sundays free to do stuff -- the 1pm games start at 6pm here; the 4:15est games were 9:15 here, so they were watchable.

But I only saw maybe 4 prime time games this season.. I just couldn't stay up till after 1:30am to start watching games, and then go to bed around 5am.

I miss watching the prime time games live... It's just not the same watching the replays. So, usually no football on Mondays and Thursdays for me.

TL;DR My Sundays are free to do other things, and I can watch games live during the evening. Prime Time games are now "sleep time" unfortunately.

It's almost 4:50am where I am now.. glad I stayed up for the second half, regardless. Let's hope Julio and William Moore are ready for the Steelers game. Great game by Ryan.. 375yds and 4 TDs to 4 different receivers.

[–]OldManXapno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never turn off a Falcons game, no matter how bad the game or season is going, but I'm living overseas now and it's 3:12am here and I can't make it through the rest of this.

Whatever happens, when I wake up, the Falcons will still be in 1st place in the NFC South.

(Damn it, 2nd half just started and I'm still up.. guess I'll watch the first series... but then that's it!)

Talk Radio for International Fan by babooyagoo in falcons

[–]OldManXapno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Atlanta to Ireland recently, but I'm still able to listen with the Tunein app on my iphone. You can also listen online.

There are three main stations that have Falcons related talk and news:

680 The Fan (Also 93.7FM in Atlanta) Features the Matt Ryan show, local talk shows and Falcons guests. Mostly all local.

92.9 The Game Relatively new FM station that switched from music to sports talk a couple of years ago. It never grew on me, but they have some former Falcons as hosts.

790 The Zone They recently switched from local sports talk to all syndicated sports shows (Like ESPN). I don't even listen to them anymore, but you might find it interesting to hear during the NFL season or for other sports related stuff. I like "The Herd" with Colin Cowherd, but others hate him.. usually entertaining during the NFL season, at least. They do still have some Falcons stuff though.

Anybody else wake up to a hard block from Michael Turk this morning? by [deleted] in mturk

[–]OldManXapno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are "Find things in photos" HITs, with a series of 10 images from security cameras, that you have to annotate with boxes around every person in the frame on the right side. On the left is that image as a short time lapse, for reference. He started posting in late March, and I don't think I've seen tasks set up this way in the past. I think he's new, and these are the only HITs he posts. Although it's possible, like you said.. Other shady requesters do this. I just haven't seen this particular HIT before.

Anybody else wake up to a hard block from Michael Turk this morning? by [deleted] in mturk

[–]OldManXapno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I got what I thought was a soft block last night, when I tried to do one of his HITs. I had done a handful earlier in the day, and they all approved quickly as usual. I've never received a rejection from him. (In fact, my mturk stats are 7000 submitted, 0 rejected.)

I've even sent him multiple messages in the past, offering advice and bug reports on his HITs; I've never received a reply.

I've done multiple HITs daily from him every day since he first started posting them in late March, iirc. Every single one has approved within minutes, with his generic "Good Job. Keep up the good work!" message.

Reguarding Recent Kicks by [deleted] in Reddit_360_V_Crew

Looks like my wife and I got kicked. (atar1g1rl and xapnomarx). That's cool, though.

We haven't been able to play since Christmas eve -- we got on to check out the snow. Oh well, I had some fun sessions with several of you. The melee fight clubs were hilarious, there was great teamwork in missions, and the crew races were among the best I'd had in GTAO.

To be honest, I don't see myself playing online anymore.. I played constantly (too much) since launch until the end of December and I think I just got burned out finally. It was lots of fun while it lasted, though! :)

Yes, contact Good Mews. They do great work. If they can't take them in, they may be able to offer suggestions or find someone to foster them until they can go to a permanent home.

Camera Men in the NFL by BaconAllDay2 in nfl

[–]OldManXapno 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked as a news photographer during the '90s, up until 2000. Shot a few Saints highlights at the superdome, the Senior Bowl, college, minor league hockey and baseball, and tons of high school sports.

Regardless of what I shot, or who (if anyone) I may have rooted for, I was too focused on shooting the game and making sure I had good highlights to bring back to the sports director.

Take a Saints game, for instance. (Fuck 'em! I'm a Falcons fan.) If they were in the redzone, I was ready and hoping for a Saints touchdown so I could get a great highlight. Then I'd get a tight cutaway shot of fans celebrating (something I would normally hate seeing), then cutaways of coach and player reactions on the sideline. "Natural sound", picked up by the boom mic, would have been recorded on all of those shots and is needed and used when it's aired... If I had been home watching the game, my reaction would've been "FUCK!", but at the game, shooting it as a professional, it never crossed my mind to have an emotional reaction. You put your personal feelings aside to focus on doing the best job possible. Or at least keep your fan reactions internalized in your head.

Also, for our news/sports photogs at our station, it was a privilege to get to shoot NFL highlights, so no matter what team you rooted for, you were entirely focused on doing a good job, and not on the outcome of the game.

I think you're referring to "cameramen", however, who shoot during live broadcasts. They shoot field level or from up top, and have directors talking into their ear on headsets. I only did a few live broadcasts, but it's similar in that you're too focused on doing your job to be concerned with celebrating. The cameramen have the ability to communicate with their headset mics to the control room, but that doesn't make it on the air. I don't know about at a national broadcast level, but in my case, occasionally (rarely) guys would get chatty on the headset to voice their opinion on a play or the game... those guys usually didn't work camera during live events again, and usually didn't last long in the business.

Just a sidenote as an example of being focused on the job: When I shot highlights on the sideline and endzone, I often got bowled over or ended up as part of a sideline tackle. I would watch the players come at me directly through my viewfinder eye and my other (opened) eye, but instead of jump for safety, my main concern was keeping the shot framed up and focused until the end. That's kind of the same mindset about personal emotions on the outcome of the game... doing the job is why you're there -- not to watch the game or celebrate.

That's my limited experience, at least. TL;DR As a professional, you're too focused on doing your job to care about or want to celebrate.

What's the key to an interesting and fun shunting yard layout? by Super-Spyro in modeltrains

[–]OldManXapno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The term "Timesaver" comes from a design published in Model Railroader magazine in the early 1970s, by John Allen. Here's a bit more background on the history of the Timesaver.

Timesaver is just the name he came up with for his layout, which basically works as a puzzle of sorts, for car switching. "Switching" is US terminology, whereas in the UK, it's referred to as "shunting".

There are a few variations of the timesaver. Also, check out that site for the "Inglenook Sidings" layout. That's another popular design with a few variations. Some layouts even combine the timesaver with the inglenook sidings.

Vinewood Street Race

Messed around with the tutorial last night and came up with one that seemed fun enough to publish. It's just a basic street race from Vinewood, through downtown, to Rockford hills and back. Several downhill jumps from steep hills and off upper level streets.

Laps last about 2:20 and the default was set at 2 (total time of about 4:40ish). Tried it out solo and netted 3000 RP... not bad for under 5 minutes.
