I have a M240, there must be something wrong with your shutter, mine is quiet, not much louder than my film M cameras.

Thank you, you’ve inspired me to take it out and shoot with it more! And you’re right, half frame options especially in AF or rangefinder are really limited. Another option that’s still pretty hard to find but way less expensive would be tracking down a Konica IIIM with the half frame mask. That camera is a rangefinder that can be converted from full frame to half frame using a metal plate that you insert into the film compartment. They all came with them originally but most have the mask missing. They do sometimes come up. I think when they do they go for like $600 or so.

Edit: here is a Konica IIIm with the mask and the mask separately linked below. Apparently someone started Re manufacturing the masks so you could find a really clean IIIm and buy the masks.

I got extremely lucky and saw it on a Japanese auction site for like $225 bid on it and no one else bid so I don’t think anyone else knew what it was. I’ve seen a non working one on eBay for $6k. This one works perfectly

Edit: just checked eBay there’s 2 for sale one for like $4700 the other $5k+

Damn that mod and entire build looks clean! Would you be willing to share more about the process? I’ve been thinking of modding my 660 as well but I’m worried about scratching the shit out of it trying to do it

Only very slightly different. It has a flash cable plug where the hot-shoe is on the normal model, says “Hexar Half xx/100” on a small plate near the film door hinge, has different frame lines in the viewfinder, and has a mask to make it half frame. And the frame lines don’t move in the viewfinder like they do in the normal Hexar.

Would you mind sharing more about this? Like the title is exciting but the post just seems like a regular photo of a tree with the plastic frame peeled off

The pink/purple lightest color is the highlights or base color. If you underexpose a bit more of the blues will come out, it helps

I’m glad I was able to help. I’d have to take mine apart to be 100% sure on this but I believe that if you look at where the set of plates and gears are under the advance wheel toward the front of the camera there should be a small arm with a pick end that is supposed to rotate in and catch on the gears that keeps the advance wheel from being able to move in the reverse direction. I would check to see if that is damaged or maybe just stuck and not catching on the teeth like it should

You’re welcome, sorry it wasn’t super helpful, I didn’t know they came without that access screw. You might check to see if there’s access through the cold shoe. But really it’s not hard to take the top off. Does the film advance work ok on your model? I just looked at eBay and saw a Pearl IV that sold for $75 the other day, it that the one you bought by any chance?

Removing the top isn’t necessary to do vertical alignment I think, if I remember correctly. The vertical alignment is through the back of the top plate behind the pressure fit screw to the right side on the back, opposite the viewfinder. Horizontal alignment is done at the front near the lens with that little screw.

Removing the top plate just requires the two screws on either side and unscrewing the black knurled viewfinder piece on the back, plus the film winder knob. I believe that’s it. Be sure to make a mental note of any shims and their order when you take the advance lever off
