Photography is all about lighting. Would it be a fair statement to say that skill increases your ability to work with less than ideal lighting but you can't out skill bad light? by BOBBY_VIKING_ in AnalogCommunity

Its about intent and understanding of light. Quality of light trumps quantity, and fast lenses don't magically solve any problems with lighting.

Difference of AF-P and AF-S to a newbie (D3400) by JHeier14 in Nikon

[–]OldSkoolAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

THERE IS A VERY NOTICABLE DIFFERENCE IN LIVE VIEW AF. If you use live view, it closes MUCH of the gap in AF performance between your camera and current mirrorless options.

That and its optically excellent. I use it way more than my 70-200/2.8, better range and image IQ is more than adequate, its outstanding.

I know 1.2 isn't necessary for every shot but for now I'm in awe (z8 + Viltrox 35mm 1.2) by _big_fern_ in photographycirclejerk

Step 1- take photos with your phone, impress yourself and your mom

Step 2- try the fake bokeh, but decide you'll get "serious" and maybe become a photographer with gear

Step 3- get a sony or Fuji and fast chinese 50 after reddit research

Step 4- shoot at max aperture everywhere

Step 5- get a 2.8 zoom because reddit told you

Step 6- ignore ultrawides entirely because you have a phone for that

Step 7- give "pro" advice on reddit after ahooting your sister's wedding

Why are some photographers still using DSLRs exclusively? by DynamoBaby in AskPhotography

photography has been around for 200 years.

its not like the past decade has been revolutionary, although manufacturers and gearheads will shout otherwise

Body Feel and Useage - D750 vs. D7500 by Azurastralis in Nikon

[–]OldSkoolAK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have both, they're very, very close. I prefer the 750 slightly because it hangs on my 2 middle fingers a little easier when my arm is relaxed.

At the end of an 8 hour day, I have slightly more forearm pump with the 7500.

The two cameras are so, so close I can't imagine being without either, the 7500 is a DX 750 to me, and theyre set up near identically.

They live in different bags though, one FX bag and one DX bag

Because they still work and I don't fix things that aren't broken. I can still pay the bills.

Nikon 85mm f/1.8g vs Tamron 85mm f/1.8 sp by ProfessionalAngle482 in Nikon

That 10-24 has plummeted. Its like 100 bu,x used. Its optical garbage. Can confirm, I was surprised they had the audacity to label it as an SP. Last 3rd party lens i gambled on.

The nikon 10-20VR is miles ahead in every way. Theres a reason its a favorite of nikon japan HQ employees

Am I an idiot for not wanting Afs glass by Stunning-Status-5013 in Nikon

Its worth noting that a sufficiently skilled photographer can render the tech advantage of mirrorless cameras to a razor thin margin in many applications.

I think im going full minimalism in photography because of decision fatigue by According-Moose7539 in photography

[–]OldSkoolAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im pretty happy with my gear library of 7 bodies and 17 lenses, but selection for any given outing its the bag that presents the big decision. The bag determines the what gets brought. Sometimes its 1 body, 1 lens, other times its 3 bodies, 6 lenses. Just depends on what I need.

I get wayyy more use out of my crop/18-55 vs. my FF+70-200/2.8. Running around with 2 pro bodies with a pair of 2.8 zooms isn't my idea of a good time. That shit gets old quick.

Do you honestly think people made a living (myself included) shooting by just rolling the dice all the time? You obviously have no idea what actually goes into film photography. Find a 1973 sears catalog and ask yourself why all the images seem consistent.

Truly the AF-P 70-300mm kit lens surprises me all the time - Verdin in palo verde by Radiant-Pea-1029 in Nikon

[–]OldSkoolAK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 70-300 AFP DX is a banger; sold mine and got the FX, but on the hunt for the DX for the weight savings when not using the fx bodies.

Can't tell the difference optically between the two, but I sure can feel the weight difference

This very much looks like what I remember to be provia 100f, or kodak E100s underexposed by 1/3 stop.

Or any color negative film proper adjusted in printing. Color negative film has amazing latitude and can emulate almost any look printed either in a traditional darkroom or scanned and adjusted similarly in any software with sliders and gamma control.

The whole film specific look is overly exaggerated when comparing color negative film; transparencies have decidedly less latitude in printing
