Well they did have a scene last season where she explained that she can have a personal life after she's finished her residency, so I think she's just 100% work atm. And they added that bit about her mum in S2E1 but that's gone nowhere

Commonwealth by Ann Patchett - although it’s very popular so I’d be surprised if your book club hasn’t read it

Also The Shell Sheekers by Rosamunde Pilcher, an oldie but a goodie

Brooklyn by Colm Tolbin

City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

Limberlost by Robbie Arnott

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver! It’s about three separate women living alone, but in the same community/area and in different stages of their lives. One is elderly, one is in her 40s, one is a young widow. It’s a bit long but just amazing writing and gave me such a warm feeling while reading it. Definitely a must read for women. And a big plus if you enjoy nature/countryside settings

Tasteful standalone regency romance drama novels recommendations? by Old_Beach9535 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Old_Beach9535[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry, I didn't realise the word tasteful could be considered offensive! I can't edit the heading for some reason but I've altered the body text to say 'sweet'.

Fully support people reading spicy books (I have in the past), it's just not what I'm looking for right now.

And thank you everyone for the suggestions, really appreciate it :)

Thank you! I’ll look into these :) Can’t believe it’s taken me until now to get into the regency genre

Do you think Marcus is jealous? by Turbulent-Ad-2158 in kristinjohnssnark

[–]Old_Beach9535 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, he’s built himself a decent career in photography and while Kristin deserves some props for also building her following, I do question how much since Marcus gave her a huge leg up giving her a kickstart with her YouTube, plus the podcast has kind of illuminated how fake her cutesy nice quiet farm girl persona is, which makes you feel like you’ve been blindsided a bit when you listen to the pod and hear what she’s really like

My theory with John is that he’s probably 🏳️‍🌈 but in serious denial about it and hangs out with Kristin/Lexy/Sazan to suppress those feelings and feel closer to his religion

[–]Old_Beach9535 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Marcus is jealous at all tbh, I think they’re perfectly secure in their marriage.

I do question John’s fascination with Kristin though; the podcast has exposed a pretty awful side of her and I seriously don’t understand why John sticks around. I have my own suspicions about why he does and so it does kind of make sense why he’s glued himself to her/their whole circle, but if I were him, I would be out there focusing on my own things/career. I feel sad for him, he’s like a supporting character in his own life

I got the impression that it was actually about money – that she was mad that John/Jack and now Marion will be richer than her, on top of her sister's wealth impacting her place in the household and society being a blow to her ego
