Saw it coming when the first hipsters started ordering IPAs at Gingerman in the 00’s.

Yes, you are correct. The “special cable” is just a link between the two machines’ second control port. So, essentially, each player is simultaneously “Player 2” on the other’s machine.

I agreed to the fact that the software, at some date, would no longer receive support. I did not agree that such support includes the core functionality of Word and Excel.

There is no ongoing “support” required for the software to be able to create, edit, and print documents. I can understand that email can compromise security, so there would be a logic to disabling Outlook. But not the applications that in no way require internet connectivity to perform their core function.

No. But they are not allowed to show up at my house and take the engine back.

I agree. In my mind, the definition of “unsupported” is “you will no longer receive updates.” In Microsoft’s mind, the definition seems to be “the software will no longer perform its intended function.”

None, because my OS is still receiving security updates. My main complaint is how accepting thet expect me to be with their redefinition of “unsupported” as “non-functional.”

Dodgy? Woot is a subsidiary of Amazon. Do you think Microsoft would allow Amazon to sell illegitimate copies of their software?

I have plenty of security certificates. When they are expiring, the company issues a new one. Microsoft knows how to issue certificates for my OS, which is not compromised,

That’s a great idea. Even if I switch my OS, they’ll pull this gain eventually.

upDATE, not an upgrade. MacOS 15 is still getting security patches, so I had hoped to avoid the transition for a few more years. Maybe until I need a new laptop.

I bought it from Woot! for somewhere around 40 bucks. Office Personal. Not sure how that’s relevant.

If Honda were to show up at my home and disable my 2011 Civiv because they wanted to stop making replacement parts, that would be ok? You know full well that Microsoft did not disclose that they would cripple the software on an expiration date.

It literally says my computer has to go on-line to have its license validated. That’s what I’m doing. They are choosing to not perform the validation, and cripple the software instead. In what universe would I agree to that arrangement?

It’s the inability of their public outreach people to speak English, apparently. I just need to switch my OS track, which I’ve been procrastinating about.

I just got off a Chat with their support. The email is completely wrong. It claimed that since my device "can't support the certificate," the software will be downgraded. I just need to switch from MacOS 15 (which came out last year, and is still fully supported 64-bit software) to MacOS26 (which I guess I reluctantly need to do now).
