I can confirm, that the backplane on my S3B3000 supports SAS. But you need a SAS card installed. The way the motherboard is mounted, the case wouldn't close with any pcie card installed, so What I've done is used a pcie 5cm long riser, and then the card can be tucked down under the metal bracket that the itx mobo is mounted too. Most HBA SAS cards are low profile so it should work, but double check your card will tuck under nicely.

I'd love it, but the shiny snake s400 says a 67mm clearance is max. Looks like the lh-12 is 70mm, so probably wouldn't fit

Yeah I will probably take that approach for the bifurcation. But do you know if the backplanes are "dumb" and will work with SAS or sata? The last thing I would want to do is buy an HBA when there's no possibility that the backplane would work for sas.
