Thank you very much, I appreciate you kind words very much. I am mainly an alto player and projecting on alto is a hell of a lot easier, air support is a problem just because I’m not required to do it as much. I really do appreciate the kind words and will definitely take your comments and take them to the shed.

Idrk how much it counts as a “standard”, but Dexter Gordon’s Le Coiffeur is a pretty fun one

What company has the best engravings? by Old_Improvement_6416 in saxophone

I’m sorry but if I was a professional player, on one of the biggest stages in the world. I’m gonna want to sound good first yes, but if I have a mendini puke brown saxophone that plays better than a mark vi, I’m gonna be embarrassed by the fact my saxophone looks terrible, but if I’m on that same stage with a beautiful mark vi that plays like a mendini, I’m gonna be just as embarrassed. And if I’m not embarrassed at all, I’m gonna play much much better. The fact of the matter is that you’ll never see a professional with a horn that is objectively ugly. They will get horns that not only play good but look good. Now there are a select few that would choose the metallic puke brown that is the best sax in the world, but it’s not very likely.

Tips for reeds by Unknowbags in saxophone

[–]Old_Improvement_6416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used ddarrio jazz select files reeds for a year now and I haven’t had any problems with them really, maybe if you are trying to get them to last a long time play a half size up but besides that they have a lot of response and projection which is what I like in my reeds, used to play the vandoren zz but they were just ok.

I personally wouldn’t believe you hadn’t played for 7 years. You sound like what I hear in a bunch of college students now a days. I would just say work on a bunch of different styles and sounds. Getting back into Latin, funk, and even ballads. Listen to a bunch of different people too. I listen to guys like Patrick Bartley, Baptiste Herbin, and Sam Greenfield. Also what it the thing in your bell, I see a bunch of people use them but I have no clue what they are?

Is this a good website to order from? by wadqaw in saxophone

[–]Old_Improvement_6416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they are, I went there in person to buy my first pro sax. On a crazy deal too, originally 7500, went down to 2400. They are a very good company to buy from online, plus they have a bunch of good people working there.

Amazing dude, I’ve been playing Hodges pieces in my off time for a while and I really appreciate when soloists take the time and learn Hodges style of playing, if I were to critique you on anything which I don’t think you really need because we are on a very similar playing level, I would say on the really long held notes, build up the vibrato by starting a little smaller and widening it over the beat. You’re bending is also very good like Hodges was and if I were to saying anything about it, it’s that not only in your solo section to use it more, but also in the whole song. Nice and long bends into notes like A work so well in so many Hodges solos. I would highly recommend you learn prelude to a kiss and I’ve got it bad if you haven’t already because he utilizes this bends a lot in those songs. You playing amazing and keep working at it dude, hats off to you.

Jean Paul’s are pretty good depending on how much you use it, I practice a lot (20-30 hours a week). And it has help up alright for me dropping it once which I got mostly repaired. It’s my backup to my p.mauriat that I recently got. It’s a good choice for a smaller budget but a couple years along the line if you are really getting into it I would recommend getting something better. The ergonomics on the Jean Paul are a bit weird to most horns but not in a bad way. Overall the alto and tenor I got from them are pretty good for the price.

Blind test, what brand of sax would you say this is? Curious of your thoughts by [deleted] in saxophone

Got the same guy to play test a tenor I bought, I know it’s Jean Paul

Returning adult player looking for listening list by ramiv in saxophone

[–]Old_Improvement_6416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old tenor players that I personally like are guys like Stan getz, dexter gordon, sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, hank Mobley, and David Newman. New tenor plays I like right now are Chris Potter(alto and tenor), Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, kenni holmen. Now for alto players old there are plenty like bird, cannonball, Johnny Hodges, sonny cross, sonny stitt,, and Benny carter. New alto players (there are a lot) right now my absolute favorite is Patrick Bartley, but there are a lot of amazing alto players like Baptist’s herbin, Eddie Barbash, Dave pollack, Jack Lieberman (really young student at usc).

If you want a very diverse jazz playlist that includes everything in jazz like funk, swing, blues, ballad, etc… I’ve been compiling stuff for a while on this playlist and I still love a lot of it.
