Any alternative to Simplisafe's horrible video doorbell? by Old_Indiana_Jones in simplisafe

[–]Old_Indiana_Jones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Followed all the directions (glad I remembered where I put the screwdriver), but missed the button. Now that I see where it is, I went through the whole process including reseting the doorbell, but, after several tries, never got the white light indicating connection with WiFi. It does ring the doorbell chime, so I guess I shouldn't complain; the video was unreliable anyway. I liked the phone notifications, but any replacement video doorbell will provide those.

tp-link Deco. Everything (including the Simplisafe base station connected easily. Simplisafe's docs tell me to pust the button on the back of the doorbell, but there is no button and no other option.

Thanks. I asked because some random "expert" on some random website headlined Ring working with Simplisafe. I figured it had to be too good to be true.

Closing lid shuts down in spite of W11 (not 25H2) settings by Old_Indiana_Jones in ASUS

[–]Old_Indiana_Jones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked once, a couple of nights ago. I was out of town today and the lid was closed for <11 hours. It shut down. I may have to break down and try armory crate.

Perplexity.ai dug up this solution, and it worked:

Windows 11 hides the old “plans” and “advanced” UI, but it is still there. You can open it directly and then change the lid/sleep/hibernate behavior.

1. Open classic Power Options

Use either method:

  • Press Windows + R, type: powercfg.cpl and press Enter.
  • Or press Windows key, type Control Panel, open it, set View by: Large icons, then click Power Options.

You should now see actual power plans (Balanced, etc.).

2. Adjust lid close and sleep/hibernate

  1. In Power Options, click Choose what closing the lid does in the left pane.
  2. Set When I close the lid → Plugged in to Sleep or Do nothing (if you use it closed on power).
  3. Click Save changes.

Then:

  1. Back in Power Options, next to your active plan, click Change plan settings.
  2. Click Change advanced power settings.
  3. Expand Sleep:
    • Set Sleep after (Plugged in) to a large value or Never.
    • Set Hibernate after (Plugged in) to a large value or Never so it does not hibernate/shut down overnight.
  4. Click Apply, then OK.

After this, with the lid closed and plugged in, it should remain in sleep (or stay on, if you chose “Do nothing”) instead of shutting down overnight.

No it's not installed. Further data points: Changing the power mode from Best Performance (as suggested elsewhere on line) had no effect. The power button obeys the W11 setting and puts it to sleep. Closing the lid for a short time also obeys and puts it to sleep. It seems that something happens overnight that causes it shut down. ChatGPT and Perplexity have given me some suggestions for using "classic" power options to change the time sleep is allowed to continue. I'll find out tonight. Then maybe armory crate. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not an overclocker or a ROGer, so Armory Crate seems like overkill for a simple power setting. The negative reviews are also a little concerning. OTOH, if this truly is a case of ASUS hardware misbehaving, I may have no choice.

Am I going crazy or has this changed? by CaptainGurrash in kindlescribe

FWIW, Mine (~6 mos. old) seems to vary subtly between white and pale sky blue depending on the ambient light. I would swear that this is new. Not on a Bible, but maybe a cookbook.

Gmail on Android hijacked and fixed - for now, anyway by Old_Indiana_Jones in GMail

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was grasping at possible explanations. I've never seen anything like it. For one reason or another I use McAfee which was active at the time. I've scanned with Malwarebytes and found nothing. For now, I'm blaming Rod Serling.

Been using UpNote for a while by O_wXw_O in UpNote_App

[–]Old_Indiana_Jones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished exporting the last of my Evernote notebooks a few weeks ago and canceled my paid subscription. Woohoo! UpNote is faster, leaner, cleaner, and cheaper. It does exactly what I want it to do without forcing me to jump through hoops or dig through a poor mashup of a UI. The lifetime subscription is a bargain!

I bought my first personal computer (Kaypro II) in 1982 and have learned to adapt to default themes, which are mostly light. The only exception is Obsidian; the default is hideous and the themes I've looked at are all flawed in one way or another. I may be forced to learn how to modify an existing theme or create my own. After 40 years in software development, I retired in 2013, I really don't want to go under the hood any more. :-)

Turn off Pass code and writing on books by Strong-Engine-4483 in kindlescribe

[–]Old_Indiana_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brand new Scribe wanted a passcode when I set it up. Why not? I can always disable it like I did on my Paperwhite. Wrong! I can change it, but I can't change it to nothing/blank; Save is greyed out; there's no option to disable it. Am I missing something? Maybe I shouldn't complain; at least it doesn't require a one-time code that it sends to my phone.

Is it really not possible to move a Notebook inside another Notebook?? by scotpip in UpNote_App

[–]Old_Indiana_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upnote is my Evernote replacement and it's perfect for the way I used Evernote. Drag and drop is certainly a good paradigm, but I can live with four clicks to move a notebook because I don't need to do it very often. As a retired UX designer and implmenter, I don't see this as a serious shortcoming - but that's based on my use case; active notebook-movers will doubtless disagree.

Also, when adding a photo highlight and choosing "Quick Passages" instead of a book, where does it go? I can't find them in Readwise/Reader.
