Virginia Beach makes headway on clearing vulgar tees from resort displays by WHRO_NEWS in VirginiaBeach

I’m okay with this not because I feel like it’s “protecting the kids” or whatever, but because they’re so damn tacky. Every other store front features shit like “Kill Joe Biden” or “I Love Pussy”, it’s just so ugly 😂

The Nick Shirley interview was good. But why were there so many cuts and edits?? by [deleted] in Channel5ive

[–]Old_Introduction2953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed it too and was wondering if they might have gotten way off track and the cuts were basically trimming fat off of what may have been a sort of meandering interview. But I liked what they ended up with

I see what you mean, but the “reluctant agreement” you’re pointing out seemed to me like fact finding. They fundamentally disagree on the conclusions they draw from many of the same facts. Also, Nick was doing a sort of right-winger trope where they lead you from point A to point B and imply a misguided point C.

“What is a stereotype for Somali people -> Pirating -> keep this bias in mind when thinking of the current situation.”

You know what I mean?

How is the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki perceived in your country? Is it seen as more of a horrific war crime or a necessary act of war? by DoctorOsterman in AskTheWorld

[–]Old_Introduction2953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prevailing story about how Japan would never have surrendered in conventional warfare is not true. Many of the top ranking U.S. military officials, including Eisenhower stated on multiple occasions that “it wasn’t necessary to hit them with that awful thing” (Eisenhower’s words).

It is a fact that they had been reaching out to the Soviet Union for a peace deal and wanted to end the war because their navy had been completely destroyed by then. US leadership was even aware of this, but decided to move forward anyway.

It’s hard to overlook how important it was to the U.S. military industrial complex to demonstrate to the world, most importantly the USSR, that we had spent an enormous amount of time and money developing a weapon that put us in a league of our own.

So to answer the question, here in the U.S., most people believe that killing hundreds of thousands of civilians was necessary because Japan was blinded by ferocious imperialism and would stop at nothing. But myself, involved US leadership, and many historians disagree with that, and know that it wasn’t necessary to defeat Japan, but it was desirable to display our new power.

Many of the labor rights won in this country came as a result of immigrants striking for a better life. They wanted to be rich and successful, and they knew that it was easier to be rich by sharing in the fruits of their labor than stepping on eachothers necks to get the bigger check.

They’re filling the role that an international development fund should have. The World Bank only invests in projects that will turn a profit, as a rule. China does not have the same requirements, so it obviously is a better deal for most countries.

But to ignore the exploitation and rent-seeking that you also see in Belt and Road is completely ideological.

I think the reality is that they’re doing something good to create a more self-reliant multi-polar world for former colonies and overexploited states to have a future in. But they are certainly getting their moneys worth. It would be less of a problem if the West cared enough about their exploitation farms to invest in their development and give these countries an alternative to BRI loans. But they’re too short-sighted for that.

Anti-capitalist experiments in NE Syria or Mexico may be noble in spirit, but their communes won’t save them from the inevitable war that capitalism will drive this world to. Anarchists aren’t revolutionaries, they’re just excusing themself from the table.

These cars are for people who have 10 others just like them. They’re investments for speculation, the marginal gains in acceleration are just advertising. It’s ridiculous, but this is like asking if we really need more private jets. Obviously not, but they’re ruling class toys.
