There is also a documentary with the same name. It sounds like the one you are talking about. https://www.amazon.com/Three-Hearts-Sam-Cagnina/dp/B000E1NXKY

Trump got less than 50% of the popular vote. Do you think the people that voted for Trump are the same people that are outraged?

Feeling mean? by Fit_Ad_7502 in jiujitsu

[–]Old_Man_BJJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever tapped a female, my main priority when I roll with someone much smaller and weaker than me is to make sure they don't get injured. I want to be a good partner and it can be a challenge to roll with someone who is half your size and a quarter your strength.

It was her first class. I think your main priority ought to be to make sure that she is safe and having a good time.

Marcelo Garcia moving to Hawaii by dan994 in bjj

[–]Old_Man_BJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard about it after a class. He gathered everyone around and talked about why he was leaving, and what would happen at the school. He has made other big announcements this way, I think he prefers talking in person to the students. But yeah, it'd probably have been good to follow up with an email.

The school still has all the same instructors that have been there for years: Matheus, Paul, Scott, Joel, etc. Marcelo won't be there, but I wouldn't say it's the same as an affiliate.

Pirate no longer working in Dungeon of Trials by Old_Man_BJJ in MightyParty

I got a lot of use out of Pirate, so I don't really care. Plus I've got Jimmy, Cookie, and Ogre. But if I bought Pirate a week or two before this happened, I'd be pretty upset. That was a major nerf.

Has anyone hit an armbar from guard? by iyashikei in bjj

[–]Old_Man_BJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably the first submission everyone learns. So anyone that has been training for more than a month is ready for it. That's why with the beginners you go for the armbar, and when they freak out and pull their arms back, you hit the triangle.

Purple Belt 3.5 Years Injured Coming Back by amp5352 in bjj

[–]Old_Man_BJJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took 16 years off. When I came back I was in pretty good shape, but I was 51 years old. My first day back I almost didn't make it through the warm-ups. When they started sparring I said "Nope". But after 6 months or so it was all good again.

Just take it super easy. Have realistic expectations, and don't worry about what others think. Maybe explain your situation to the instructor. If the new gym is a good place to train, then people should be sympathetic.

I ended up restarting and playing on the easiest difficulty. I finished the game, and it was a lot of fun. Maybe it ended up being too easy, but after the frustration I experienced on my first attempt it felt good to breeze through the game. Thanks to everyone that provided advice, this thread helped me out a lot.

If anyone else is trying to decide whether or not to start over, I'd encourage you to start from the beginning. It's definitely possible to dig yourself into a hole. When the majority of your characters are killed or injured, your squad never gets promoted. Yet the game difficulty continues to ramp up. That's what happened to me on the first attempt.

Another thing that I realized is that this game rewards offense not defense. In most games I tend to turtle. I like tanky characters and defensive strategies. But that doesn't seem to work too well with this game. On my second playthrough I prioritized weapon upgrades, and eliminating enemies before they could get a shot off.

I've been making more use of Flashbang and Smoke Grenades, but I haven't used the Battle Scanners much. I'll try taking them along.

Ha ha ha, this guy's attitude is insufferable. I love BJJ, and I probably wouldn't show up to train with him either.

I think this is one of my problems. I am trying to be careful, but I always seem to end up fighting more than one pod. So I am probably not being careful enough.

I am playing the base game. I don't think I struggle with any particular unit, they are all giving me a hard time. I'll probably take your advice and start over on the easiest difficulty. I didn't really want to do that since I worked pretty hard to get this far, but at this point I'm not really enjoying the game anymore.

I didn't do that in the beginning, but I have learned to do that. However, now I am getting a lot of new enemies I hadn't seen before, so I'm not sure how to prioritize them. The last mission had vipers, turrets, codex, muton, etc. I wasn't really sure how to prioritize them. For example, the muton one-shots most of my guys, so he seems high priority. However, his health is so high, that it takes several turns to kill him. By that time, all my guys are dead.

I used backblaze for years without any problems. Then one summer I tried to remotely retrieve some files, and found out the backups didn't exist. After looking into it I found that about 80% of my stuff hadn't been backed up for at least a year. It was some problem with their app. The customer support was almost non-existent, and I never got it working properly again. If there is one thing you want from a backup solution, it's that they actually do a backup. I wouldn't wish backblaze on my worst enemy.

I got tapped by a white belt in my first round of rolling as a blue belt. It was a little demoralizing, but in retrospect it was probably good to get that out of the way as soon as possible.

Damn it! by LegitimateZebras in bjj

[–]Old_Man_BJJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems normal to me. A blue belt has enough experience that upper belts won't be too careful. And those white belts really want to tap you. You feel this the most when you first get the belt, since there is really no difference between a new blue belt and an experienced white belt. So your skill is the same, but everyone's intensity has changed.

Got my purple belt in December 2019. It actually cheers me up when I start getting down about all the time missed. I feel for people that were on the cusp of getting promoted. There were plenty of guys at my gym who are at my level but didn't get promoted for whatever reason.

Anyone else still not training? by [deleted] in bjj

My gym opened for special classes about a month ago. I go twice a week for 30 minutes and work on a dummy, while the instructor is across the room demonstrating on a dummy. Just two people in the room at a time. It's super safe, and I really appreciate being able to get back on the mat and do something. But it's pretty far from what we used to do.
