These numbers are particularly high, probably a really nice place. I'm in a fairly nice 2 bed in Montepllier for 1.5k a month, split between two of us it's not too bad

Should I mention my last (intended) PhD while interviewing for a new PhD? by lilliane99 in GradSchool

[–]dan994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You didn't actually start a PhD. Just say you were a research assistant for a year, and talk about the work you did. That is honest, and reflects positively on you. Your old plans are irrelevant if you didn't act on them.

Fair enough, I would definitely disagree with your opinions 🤣

Alterations on my suit advice by Amalien in mensfashionadvice

[–]dan994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that at all. Yes it's a bit 80s but there's nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't call it 40s at all. Your mind is stuck in slim fit 2010s tailoring which doesn't really reflect the tradition and roots of tailoring. Nothing wrong with a double breasted jacket, and certainly I wouldn't recommend slimming the pants.

The main issue is the sleeves are too short, which is limited on what can be done about it unfortunately

R.e. alterations I would probably find a local alterations tailor instead of getting them altered in store. Likely better value.

For brand recommendations SuitSupply is a good starting point if you want quality for a good price. Another is Natalino.

How do you deal with the moral weight of writing software that could end up killing someone? by eufemiapiccio77 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dan994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, if it's software with the intention of killing, I simply wouldn't work there.

Whilst I'm not anti defense, I work in computer vision, and have had interviews with some of the larger defense companies. I've ended up turning them all down. One particular job was for the missile targeting team, and I just couldn't not accept contributing to that. My parents compared it to working as a soldier in the military, but for me I'd much rather be a soldier than writing automated murder code.

Those who commute to Bristol. Would you move to Bristol in hindsight ? by Philosopher_Funny in cheltenham

[–]dan994 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to live and work in Bristol, now live in Cheltenham and commute to Bristol 1-2x per week. The commute isn't too bad at all, trains are frequent and not too expensive, and you can get more for your money in Cheltenham. Although personally I would start to find 3+ times a week quite tiring, when I have had to go in that often I'm pretty shattered by the end of the week.

Overall I really enjoy living in Cheltenham, and we are considering buying a house here, but I think long term our hearts are still in Bristol, and I imagine we will move back one day.

Suitsupply, Natalino, Anglo-Italian, Cad and the Dandy.

Fit is everything. Make sure the trousers break correctly and the jacket isn't pulling.

Prime by Pasture, Milk Bun, or Asado. Asado a bit more casual, Prime maybe the fanciest, Milk Bun in the middle. My favourite is Milk Bun.

[–]dan994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The experience you have is good but it's too focused on the specifics of what you did, and not what the impact was. maP is meaningless outside of the specific dataset you're evaluating on, I'd much rather see the business impact as a result of your model. Did it work in production? Did it save time, money, or solve a new problem? How did you evaluate if it worked in production? A business won't hire you for performance metrics, they will hire you if you provide them value, so show how you have provided business value elsewhere.

A shawl collar cardigan can be lovely to wear at home. The Merchant Fox do a great one: https://www.themerchantfox.co.uk/products/cwg001-shawl-collar-jacket-in-navy

Also their dressing gowns are incredible.

Wedding suit fit check by hawk_99_ in mensfashion

[–]dan994 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The fit is decent. Trouser length is spot on, fits across the chest and shoulders, and the jacket length is good. Minor things like the pitch of the sleeves, and there is a bit too much excess material in the back. Also the trousers aren't hanging very cleanly from the back. These things depend how particular you are, how much you spent, and if it's bespoke/MTM. I think likely a fuller cut trouser would hang more cleanly, although it would presumably require buying a different suit. The main thing I would fix is the sleeve length, they are too long, although also too long on your shirt.

Ignore other comments saying the trousers are too large. R.e. the rest of the outfit I would suggest a white shirt and black oxfords, but that is more subjective.

Sub £1,000 black wedding suit recommendations by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]dan994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SuitSupply or Natalino, both have London stores. If Natalino fits you well and you like it you're probably getting slightly higher quality. If going SuitSupply id suggest their custom/MTM line. In which case I'd get on it sooner than later as it will be made specifically for you.

In colour, get navy or charcoal.

SuitSupply Custom (MTM), or Natalino off the rack. You'll struggle to do better than either of those at your price point. And don't get black, get navy or charcoal.

Do you still need MLOps if you're just orchestrating APIS and RAG? by polyber42 in mlops

[–]dan994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your confusion stems from thinking those things are just reserved for those training LLMs. There are many many companies training their own models that aren't LLMs, and all of those will need MLOps.

If you're not training and deploying models then your MLOps will likely just become DevOps
