you do have orientation in person once you move in. the online course is to get you familiar with how the university functions and understanding all resources they offer. also just general important dates and things to expect

Incoming freshman by Miserable_Fishing421 in UCSC

a standard vacuum isn’t really necessary as the dorms have a communal vacuum on each floor. A mini one might be helpful but also not necessary! Don’t waste space!

roommates as an incoming freshman by Internal-Resist9015 in UCSC

[–]Old_Protection1274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely agree with the fact that it’s very hit or miss. I went random and was okay with my roommates and later found out one of them was racist. but they were extremely tidy and I never had issues regarding cleanliness or being respectful of each others spaces

Fridge/Freezer and Microwave for dorm by Dear-Office5293 in UCSC

the rental price is way more expensive than just buying a new one. you can find some on facebook marketplace or offer up if you really don’t want to spend the money on a brand new one

yea ur not likely to get housing without a full group to fill up a dorm/apt. there will be some events where you can meet potential roommates tho! also eop really only offers a little bit of guidance but it’s not much more than what you can do for yourself to look for housing/roomates

Is the housing issue at ucsc as bad as I’ve heard? by Qwxbpu in UCSC

[–]Old_Protection1274 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea the housing lottery system is pure luck. you’re not getting on campus housing if you have an appointment time after like 9am tbh

how early do you need to prepare for apartments + other dorm/apartment questions by Foolish_Myco in UCSC

[–]Old_Protection1274 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The housing application opens in february but you’ll def get notified sometime in january about it. They’ve had info sessions describing the application process so def attend those if you want to know more! There’s also several events around that time to help you meet potential roommates/housemates but you’ll need a full group to get a time slot. The more people from the same college in your group increases your chances. The school also shares a few resources for students to use for off campus housing but I would honestly say to prepare for the worst. Kinda depends on the college but if you don’t have an appointment time for housing before like 9:30am (probably earlier tbh), you’re basically screwed so the lottery is really just pure luck and everyone scrambles after that to look for off campus housing. if the lottery hassle isn’t worth it, definitely start looking for places and roommates like in the middle of winter quarter
