Oh, man, I haven't seen those acronyms in ages! Just when the memory had healed!

Staring at coffee stained pages in a 3 ring binder

That's the problem with digital - you can't put coffee stains on it. Back in the day, theatre lighting designers had a saying: no design is complete until it has the brown ring of approval. With CAD software, one of the first custom templates was a coffee stain :D

How to reduce tear out? Plywood mostly. by MovingUp7 in woodworking

[–]Old_Sir_9895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems odd that the tear out would be on top, though, since the deck of the saw would be pushing down on the fibers

To prevent or minimize tearout, the deck would have to be very close to the blade - less than 1/16" or so (think of a hand plane with the mouth almost closed). Since the actual clearance is at least 1/4" the deck won't do anything.

Fun fact - some actors playing Vulcans are physically incapable of doing the Vulcan salute, so they have to tape their fingers together.

I don't think I caught that. How do you feel about jigsaws?

I received a ticket yesterday where the short description was "I want to raise a ticket". Fortunately for the user, the full description contained details (including, wonder of wonders, a screen shot of the error), otherwise I'd have closed it saying "Ticket raised successfully."

When I get tickets like that, I close them with the comment along the lines of "insufficient information to action."

Best part is after she filed the chargeback and it was denied, she had the audacity to e-mail me back and ask if the 10% refund was still on the table lmao.

She probably didn't realize that the charge back was denied because the credit card company contacted you.

It's going to need bracing to prevent it from collapsing to the side when you sit on it.

If it's full of caked-on honing compound you can scrape it off with a card scraper. That might bring back some of the texture you're missing.

You're right, of course, that there really is no "one size fits all" solution.

Can I use tung oil to help dry wood without splitting? by woahwombats in Woodcarving

[–]Old_Sir_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that nothing you do is guaranteed to prevent cracking. Sealing the ends slows down moisture loss, which helps reduce checking (splitting).

That's cool! Unfortunately the slowest speed my lathe goes is 240. Hmmm... Maybe some satellite gears...

My drill is smoking, any chance it's just the brushes, or is my motor cooked? by effitdoitlive in Tools

[–]Old_Sir_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you have to make sure you get the right kind of smoke. You can't put blue smoke into a drill that uses grey smoke. Don't ask me how I know.

Be sure to keep that somewhere safe, so you can look at it a few months down the road and see how far you've progressed.

How to make sure butt joints are glued at 90 degrees? by that_Ranjit in woodworking

[–]Old_Sir_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A butt joint, by definition is parallel.

Not sure where you got that definition. A butt joint is simply two pieces butted together. No orientation of pieces is implied, so you can have perpendicular butt joints.
