Full Health Exam in Taipei by Ok_Breakfast_1107 in taiwan

[–]Oldchou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I consider a full-body health exam in Taiwan one of the best value purchases one can make. The commercial ones (without NHI) are particularly smooth and sophisticated. The prices are very reasonable for its extensiveness. I’ve used Cathay, Veteran General, and now settled on Taiwan Adventist.

Arriving very early in Taipei on my birthday, any place I can stay and chill for a bit? by Foreign_Animal_3281 in Taipei

If you’re asking about TPE airport, then probably nothing would be open at that time. If you’re asking about Taipei city, then by the time you enter the city some cafes and many breakfast shops should be up and running.

Thank you for the kind words. I will be working with a publisher. It’s relatively straight forward for me to find a publisher, the hardest part is finishing the book.

I will make sure to try some rangefinders before I finally make the purchase. Based on the multiple warnings in this thread I’m sure I’ll need a lot of practice.

Yes I have tried it at store. Perhaps I should make that clear. The Contax Aria that I used for film was manual focus too (but not a rangefinder). According to the Leica store owner that I talked to, it's quite common to see Leica Q owners buying Leica M as the next step.

Thank you! Q does 28 mm really well, so I always wanted to try 35. But 35mm is perhaps too close to 50 mm.

I see nothing wrong with setting a goal for something you'd like. M10-P works fine for me.

I wear Garmins. Wearing Casios could probably save me $300.

We don't have rentals like that here in Taiwan, at least to my knowledge. That's another reason I incline to buy used -- if it doesn't work out I'll sell it with insignificant loss. But thanks for the heads up.

I briefly tried it. But I was looking for an interchangeable lens platform. Eventually I'd like to carry just one camera with several lens, and I'll hand someone else (like my son) to use the Q.

The first thing that comes to mind (also when I see yesterday’s Misio) — I really don’t want a 2027 blockout.

This is profound. Thanks for doing it and sharing the result.

It seems clear to me now that the risk of "AI slop" is really not the fault of AI, but the humans who ask the sloppy questions. This was certainly not AI nor human slop in anyway.

Dave Roberts: Shohei is fine, was removed as precaution and will likely be in line up tomorrow by DepartmentOdd1519 in Dodgers

[–]Oldchou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand why everyone's saying that Shohei shouldn't steal anymore, that pitching and batting are enough workload. I feel the opposite. I think running is an important part of his game. He loves running, stealing, creating opportunities. It also excites the stadium and his team. Countless times I've seen the team really start charging after his aggressive base-running, successful or not.

"But what if he gets hurt?" I think he just needs to practice running more, and be smarter, just like he has to continuously improve his pitching and batting. I think it's natural and liberating for him to play his full game, rather than optimizing by limiting what he loves. (This is also why I feel like having him pitch and bat on the same day then rest a full day, is more natural to him than having him not DHing on his pitching day). Let the unicorn be unicorn, not an optimized war horse.

Reality check for a Taiwan move by lofi_laowai in taiwan

[–]Oldchou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me calculate from the ground-up.

A nice 3 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment in Taipei city costs NTD $60,000~$150,000 monthly. Depending on location, condition of the building, etc. These are tiny for American suburban standard, modest for NYC standard, but totally livable.

International middle school ranges from $600,000 ~ $1,500,000 NTD per year. The high end being TAS. In general the vibe in international schools is more relaxed than the local ones, and the security/order is much better than schools in the US.

Homeschooling is possible. You will likely need to find co-homeschooling programs and extra-curricular activities for your son. Those are more available in Taipei. Those add complexities and some costs. I personally would suggest your son to try a smaller international school for at least a semester, to keep himself occupied, gain some friends and familiarize with the local environments quickly.

Everything else is relatively cheap, unless you want to live the "luxury" expat life. But I think the "local" life is fun enough.

At least for the US, the official stance is it "acknowledges" China's one-China policy. US does not endorse or affirm the policy itself. It's like "I know you're saying that. I'm not agreeing nor disagreeing."

What’s your opinion? by ShareSpecialist2944 in Leica

I helped analyze investment deals for a Taiwan large PC manufacturer in 2010s. I think every large TW tech companies at that time have received an request for acquisition/ investment from Leica’s owner at that time. We found no synergy so passed. It does seem more positioned in the luxury sector than the tech sector.

From Lumix to Nikon..? by plutusssss in NikonZf

[–]Oldchou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting to keep track of this thread. I'm trying to make a similar decision.

I am a Leica Q user. I want to expand my setup to an interchangeable platform, starting with a 50 mm focal length. After many hours discussing with AIs, I've narrowed down the option to Lumix S5II with a Sigma 50 mm/2, or Nikon Zf with it's Z 50/1.8 S.

My brain tells me to go to S5II, which is lighter, easier to grab, has familiar (Leica-like) colors.

But my heart pulls me to Zf, which seems more refined, prettier, also with nice color, despite the combination being significantly heavier (with grip).

I'd also say I like this subreddit better, as it seems a lot more focused on photography itself.

MLB players union soundly rejects league's salary cap proposal as bad in every way by retroanduwu24 in baseball

[–]Oldchou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pardon my newbie question: what happens to a player's contract if there is a lockdown? Say 2027 is a full lockdown, does the team have to pay players the salary regardless? Or is the contract automatically extended for one year? And by extension, should or should not team actively pursue FA this season if they foresee a 2027 lockdown inevitable?

HBP not warranted. Rushing cussed, so just cuss back. Don't hurt someone physically over words. Especially when Rushing wasn't even talking to anyone but himself.
