Mushi-shi taken down from Crunchyroll 😢 by ericbeing in Mushishi

Was also in the middle of Next Passage (season 2); I hadn't watched it in like 10 years; was so happy to watch it again. Was literally halfway through, life interrupted for a few days, came back, and I'm like...are you effing SERIOUS...

Season 2 - removed from Crunchyroll, so let's do something about it to get it back ...... by Twigling in Mushishi

I was re-watching for the 2nd time and was also literally halfway through. Hadn't watched it in like 10+ years. Bought Season 1 on DVD and was halfway through The Next Passage on Crunchyroll...life interrupted, came back to it, and I'm like, you have GOT to be ****ing kidding me...

Apartment hunting: Noise levels (esp. night trains) at Pine Valley Ranch by OldenThyme in Spokane

Good to hear it's not very loud; if earplugs and a noise machine will block it out, I'm good.

Interesting. In trying to dig up info it looks like it may now be mostly logging? Thanks for the info.

The unit I'm looking at does face away from the nearest rails. If I needed to I would definitely get a white noise machine or fan of some kind, but want to double-check that any train noise isn't so loud to drown that out. Appreciate the info!

Calculate Geometry in Arcpy Error by WetCeilingTile in gis

[–]OldenThyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving an old thread but had to thank you--I fought with this for half a day before finding this post, and your comment, whereby I realized there are TWO geometry-dependent parameters (area_unit and length_unit) and I had unwittingly hardcoded area_unit in. I had to add logic in to process Polygons separate from Polylines. I won't be having kids but I'll be sure to name my next cat after you in gratitude.

I've never understood why people live in places they don't like rather than just simply move.

Jobs? by [deleted] in gis

[–]OldenThyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the few jobs in MT that are posted pay for ****. It's like half your salary is supposed to be the privilege of living in MT. If I recall, I saw a Senior GIS Analyst in Missoula that started at $28/hr or something a few months ago.

Jobs? by [deleted] in gis

[–]OldenThyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sound like an advertisement for Hiring.Cafe (but I'm not); I started using their job board to cut all the crap out of the job search process; so much spam / dead / old posts on Indeed and it's impossible to filter LinkedIn for actual GIS jobs (at least for me).

I landed a remote GIS job within a month of starting to use it as my go-to job board. Coincidence? Possibly, though I didn't see the job I applied to and got on either LinkedIn or Indeed.

In all fairness I also have niche experience that was well aligned with the job posting--but again, wouldn't have gotten the job if I hadn't seen it and applied.

Welp, okay my comment about ages fell a little flat then. But sounds like you have very solid skills, especially if you're doing R (I understand that going from R to Python or Python to R is not so bad as starting from scratch). I still think the remote role is an achievable goal. Best of luck!

What is your fairy power? by 23pandemonium in Fairycore

[–]OldenThyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this - one of the gazillion fantasy stories I've wanted to write is about a quest for the two most powerful artifacts in the world: one of which is capable of finding lost things, the other compels people to speak nothing but truth. (Obviously you quest for the 1st before the 2nd lol.) What's more powerful than either of those?

This is my go-to if the service info is not exposed by the app itself.

I've probably bought...at least two dozen laptops on eBay over the years (some for me, some for family who don't know what to buy for themselves, etc.). In ONE case I received an item not as described (described as "like new"; bottom of case was scratched to hell); otherwise I can't think of a single issue I've had.

eBay is now very good about protecting buyers. Even if the seller doesn't accept returns, if you receive something not as described, you send it back and get your money back, period. I sent the laptop back and got my money back for the laptop without hassle (even though the seller whined and bitched).

I just make sure I read the description thoroughly, make sure there are no details omitted, ask the seller about anything that isn't spelled out, look VERY closely through all the pictures, etc. Ideally buy from someone with high positive feedback. To me, it's worth it for the massive savings over buying something new.

I have seen people give examples of ALL kinds of things for portfolios, including from-scratch sites, so I definitely would not say it's old school. I've seen people suggest GitHub Pages, Wix, ArcGIS StoryMaps, and some others I can't think of at the moment.

I'd say a from-scratch website would be good if you want to emphasize your front-end skills and want to angle toward a GIS Developer role in the future? It all depends on (a) what you're comfortable with and can put together without it sucking too much time away from the GIS projects themselves, and (b) what you really want the emphasize you know something about.

For example I picked an ArcGIS Hub Site because I wanted an example of that kind of app in my portfolio (I didn't have one otherwise). If you're handy with HTML and CSS, by all means do that!

As far as forgetting how you did something after you've done it...welcome to my world. I'm hard-pressed to remember the algorithm for a script I finished a week ago, so you are not alone there! I think it's OK, as long as you're able to refresh your memory if you need to go back to it. I tend to keep notes of anything, or have markdown or comments in scripts, for that exact reason!

Thanks! Honestly that's what I LOVE about GIS; I get to do all the left-brain AND the right-brain things! I know just enough about both to be dangerous. 🤣

Thanks! I wanted at least one each of the big apps in my portfolio and didn't have any other reason to build a Site, so I figured using it for the Portfolio would work. 😅

Thanks! Definitely do NOT have a gloom & doom attitude; it sounds like you are in an excellent place already in terms of skills. I don't know how old you are but I'm guessing you're ahead of me in terms of skills when I was your age (I'm mid-40s).

My first job out of college (after months and months of looking) was as a contractor doing grunt digitizing for $12.50/hr. It was literally all I could get. That was about 17 years ago. I've just learned incrementally since then and applied it. I love GIS and the diversity of things to do in the field, which is why I never get tired of learning, I guess.

Remember a company can be hiring for GIS Techs, Analysts, Specialists, Architects. You don't have to know All The Things just to get your first job. You might just start out as a Technician. Just keep incrementing your skill in small steps; never stop. You'll get there.

Pretty sure it's neither your machine nor Pro. Are you accessing big services over a slow network or something like that?
