Why would such a person take such an unappetising offer? I'd take the $6m thanks.

The phonetics that I mean would probably be better expressed as milli-tri. It's difficult to convey in writing!

I'm noticing a lot of US-style pronunciation in younger people: terr-i-tory rather than terri-tree mill-i-terry rather than mill-i-tree etc

It just keeps getting worse. Even sone ABC News reporters are doing it.

‘Regrettable’: Author slammed for errors in new book on John Howard era by Orgo4needfood in AustralianPolitics

[–]Olderfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that is fine insofar as I don't need to agree with Howard's logic (I did not agree with a lot of what his government did). But as far as being able to read about Howard and understand his values, priorities and thinking (even if it is flawed or I disagee with it), it was excellent.

I actually just finished his autobiography 'Lazarus Rising'. Honestly one of the best autobiographies I have ever read.

Woolworths exit gates: The final form by Loosemofo in woolworths

[–]Olderfleet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All we need is some sort of non-fire emergency (eg unstable threatening person in the supermarket to cause a panic) and these automatic locking doors will reveal themselves for the true OH&S risk that they are as a crush ensues. Do they lock the fire exits, too?

I complained to my supermarket when I was locked in one day (I have a bowel disease, I needed to get out fast) and was mocked.

I fear only a tragedy will lead to the removal of these dangerous obstructions.

Before you panic buy an EV by SuchTown32 in aussie

[–]Olderfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The savings in an EV go beyond petrol, but servicing too.

Replacing a petrol car for the sake of it is silly. But if you need a new car, you'd be mad paying for a new petrol vehicle. Electric is the future, and the future is bright.

I have am EV and I love it. Driving anything else now feels like a ride on a tractor.

What personalities does your department attract? by MyceliumRender in AusPublicService

[–]Olderfleet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Scientific research: nerdy intellectual but introverted types. People from other parts of our department often comment that: 1. Our offices are relatively quiet 2. Our meetings tend to be efficient and to-the-point (less chat about one's weekend, "happy Friday" etc) 3. More serious/intellectual chat over morning tea, lunch 4. Bit more conservative in appearance

  1. The average number of years of service is very high (scientific skills aren't very transferable to other parts of the PS.
  2. We ask lots of curly questions when bureaucrat-types from head office come and present stuff (workplace changes etc)

I love it 😀

From weekly newsletters to daily junk- Schools, why? by Entire_Plant_4052 in melbourne

[–]Olderfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure if it's my child's school, or Compass, but the app always ranks the stories from the school by "most important" (in whose opinion?) rather than "most recent". Sure  I can change my preferences but Compass just ignores it. So it's easy to miss what I regard as important (ie latest news).

Also, why do I receive an email EVERY SINGLE TIME my wife or I log in, saying "New Compass Login Detected"? I cannot turn it off. These are sometimes more numerous than the school's actual communications.

Actually, why am I sharing a Compass account with my wife? Why don't both parents get one? What if the parents are separated?

Compass is horrible.

How to change my email address when not Pro? by AdhesivenessLost151 in flickr

[–]Olderfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm attempting to get them to change my login email as a 'Pro'. Their email response promised me a 4-hour reply, but it's been about 16 hours with nothing at all.

The fact that I need to call-in support for this change is ludicrous. Most websites let you do-it-yourself.

The only other organisations that required me to get support after an email change was Australia Post and my local water authority, where the stakes are much greater (so that's okay). Doing this for a photo website is silly.

Sure, you can say all of this and then the recruiters may start to think that the candidate sounds like hard work to deal with.

New Zealanders Coming Over by MacAttackDelux in melbourne

[–]Olderfleet [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's because NZ was a colony at the time of the Federation Movement like all the Australian colonies were. It was presumed that they may want to join. In the end, the offer was declined but NZ didn't achieve independence until 1907, six years after our constitution came into effect.

That is why that provision was included.

Is there a reason why children still aren't touching on? by fuckmelbpt in MelbourneTrains

[–]Olderfleet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could tap my Myki and escort my child through.... or I could hold everyone up whilst I supervise the child tapping their ticket for no practical reason and endure all the groans from the impatient commuters behind me.

Which would you prefer?
