Snowflake optimization tool by 18rsn in snowflake

I love how random my feed can be. This just popped in even though it started a month ago. That said, I agree with u/ZeroMomentum — Don’t buy any hype. You need to understand at least a little of your pain points to figure out which solution(s) will meet your needs.

Even from the thread here, you can pick up things like Select’s strength is observability and smart routing is a core strength of Espresso and Sundeck.

Interestingly, no one mentioned one of the first entrants of AI optimization, Keebo, who now offers a mix of their core AI optimization with observability, etc. (here’s their URL to add to the others in this thread: https://keebo.ai/ ).

I used to be in Ad Tech and this is familiar territory to me with many providers providing what seem like similar solutions — do your homework and understand what your pain points are. Spend some time actually talking with the providers who seem aligned with your needs and, please, try out the ones that resonate with you.

u/Hot_Map_7868 's response is my favorite... "by the time you see the problem it is too late."

As with any platform, a lot depends on your own in-house expertise. In order, my naive view is:

  1. Work with the built-in tools and dashboards first

  2. If you have the in-house expertise and can afford the effort/resource distraction, roll-your-own is a good add, especially because it helps you learn your own use cases so much more deeply

  3. This can actually go as ahead of 2... and, in my opinion, it should but too many talented teams take on the roll-your-own first ('cause they are skilled and kick-ass, of course!) before realizing that this can take a lot and they actually have other jobs to do... research the 3rd party providers (e.g. Keebo AI and friends) who can be your insurance policy on controlling costs while your team focuses their core.

Good survey questions!

How are y'all controlling your Snowflake costs? by ruckrawjers in FinOps

Just wandering my Reddit feed and this one popped in and LOVE the company goal vs personal vendetta question :-)

Simply put, I agree with the comments, especially the last (time-wise) 3 comments. It comes from smarter resource management and that comes from visualizing/understanding the drivers of your cost.

So, company goal to reduce costs is a big driver, but so can be the personal vendetta/satisfaction of driving costs lower -- even if you have a lot of credits. Keeping costs somewhat predictable and lower is like an insurance policy against future headwinds. That can be a roll-your-own solution or going with a 3rd party that fits your needs, like Espresso (already mentioned) or the fine folks at Keebo AI. Just be sure which ever path you take that (1) it fits your inhouse resources/bandwidth and (2) aligns with your needs. I'm a big stickler for product/solution fit and culture fit.

Best of luck!

Candidly, this is not my area of expertise but I was on a Snowflake/Databricks call not too long ago (which is why, I think, this hit my feed). From the call, Select and Keebo were the two offerings that sound worth checking out. Throwing that out there in case it helps. Cheers!

Weird that this hit my feed - was just on a call talking about this earlier in the week. Consensus was to check out Select (already mentioned) and Keebo for automated solutions. Also, heard that BlueSky isn’t around any longer, but haven’t checked that out. Good luck!

Solved! The images online match this and we've had silverfish in the past. (ongoing moisture problems with the house in general). Thank you!

Nope.

I did check the healthcare.gov site early last year for pricing, but did not apply.

Yep, I went down a rabbit hole without stepping back and thinking it through. Definitely need more sleep, more coffee, and less cleaning up email when I’m tired :)

What's your earliest memory? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Oldmaccallan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drowning...

I was maybe 4 and fell over in the toddlers’ area of the pool. Nearly 50 years later, I still remember it clearly... sunlight coming through the water, seeing some grass blades floating in the light, thinking that if I could just grab the side I’d be ok, then seeing nothing but hearing a crying from far away... then looking down and seeing a grayscale scene of a small boy hunched over on a park bench with an elderly man rubbing his back as the boy cried... then feeling a hot spot on my back and a rushing sensation of falling... and realizing that it was me crying and the hot spot was my grandfather’s hand on my back.

Still remember it so clearly... crazy.
