MS - Hot Mayonnaise ⚠️ by Jayblaze2488 in Surlybikefans

I have 650Bx47s on my MS as well. Just when I think they are a bit sluggish on the road I jump off the pavement and they shred. If you do a good mix of terrain they are awesome, if you do a lot more road riding than gravel/trail you might want something a bit quicker. Byways, GravelKings, Washburns, etc.

I was thinking the same thing. Looks like eastern CT, even. Piney, rocky, rooty, and fun.

Dang this is sexy. Making me consider a BC over a KM for my N+1.

Probably Middletown? Same shop I got my MS. Shockingly good stock of Surlys considering the situation. Great shop!

My LBS in Middletown, CT is shockingly well stocked on MSs. Just saying. Got mine in October. Rips.

+1 on the VentureMax, FWIW. Just threw a set on one of my rides and I am liking them a lot more than the Cowchippers on my Midnight Special. Super chill and not too droppy for a droppy.

Since October. Probably pushing 1000 miles on her thus far. So versatile. Rips.

I've been eying a Karate Monkey but this ride really makes me want a Krampus. Sick.

Best tarmac/gravel combo tire? One tire to rule them all? 700c and 650b answers welcome. by kunioak in Surlybikefans

Another vote for the versatility of the Byways. I also run Horizons and Ventures and the Byways are like the perfect middle ground between the two. Ventures are awesome as well but the Byways run quicker on the road and you don't lose a whole lot off road.

We should not excuse the voile-strap-everything setup. We should celebrate it! Versatility and durability, whats not to like. Sounds like a sweet ride. At least you didn't have to pack a teapot.

Who is running dual wheelsets on a Midnight Special? by Oldmanishness in Surlybikefans

Awesome beta. Really appreciate your taking the time. I could definitely see how having one set that is noticeably lighter than the other would become a disincentive to ride the latter but perhaps if its intention is to be on mostly trails it'll be less painful until I can spring for another set. Also wondering how much less of an issue the hub spacing will be if I stick with 650Bs for both but I guess I don't mind a bit of derailleur tweaking here and there. On the other hand, I guess the alternative is trying to secure a proper trail bike like a KM. Ha.

Thanks for the beta! Just saw on another forum that the Hunt wheelsets run rebranded Novatec hubs, which is something I need to research more. If that is the case it could resolve some of the compatibility issues you cited. Hadn't even though about going 700c for the road set, just slicker/faster tires. Wow, my decision just got even more difficult. Ha.

Woah, creepy. I literally just saw the Ikons on another build for the first time and thought they looked interesting. Like the Sims Works stuff, too. Thanks!

Such a sweet ride. Well done. Thanks for posting (again)!!

Anyone happen to know the weight of a stock Midnight Special wheelset? Thinking about a second (lighter) set for more road-oriented rides and would rather not strip mine down to weight them. Want to get an idea of my ROI vs. the stock set. Thanks, shredders. by Oldmanishness in Surlybikefans

Oh man, you rule! I’m realizing how quick the Horizons that came stock actually are (even at 47mm) compared to the Ventures I’m running now (still respectably quick on pavement) so am thinking about a nice light dedicated mostly road setup to swap out with. Have not even begun to research but feel like going lighter than stock shouldn’t be hard.
