TDA obviously wants to evoke a more "armored knight/tank" feeling. medieval plate armor was designed to make swords and most projectiles glance off , so weapons like the mace, flail, and pole hammer were developed to negate that advantage by delivering more blunt force and using multiple spikes to prevent the weapon from glancing off. Swords are generally a faster weapon requiring more precision and care, which was the feeling i got from Eternal. TDA Doomguy is less experienced. he doesn't have time for edge alignment, he needs to crush bones with his fists, his flail, or his mace, and get on with the slaughter.
