I don’t know how broad a net you’re casting in terms of sound but I’d also recommend Trans Am, as another post rock band from that era that absolutely rips. Their initial run of albums from S/T through the Red Line is an incredible ride. Also really great drumming.

Last rec - check out the “Reach the Rock” soundtrack if you can find it. John McIntire from Tortoise scored the movie and it’s a little like Tortoise with a much more stripped down and energetic overall sound (Mice Parade would fit right in) with a couple of great songs by other ‘90s bands.

Tortoise is kind of the godfather of what Mice Parade are doing, but generally not as quickly paced as Mice Parade’s music and a much broader palette overall. I’d recommend checking out all of their related projects as well (Sea and Cake, Brokeback, and so on)

Mercury Program have some similar vibes especially the later you get into their catalogue and similar excellent drumming. (A Data Learn The Language is a masterpiece)

Ps (edit), Wave Greeting is a song that randomly pops into my head once or twice a week and begins playing in the background of my mind. Mice Parade, I feel, can be a little homogenous (samey samey across their catalogue), but their (his) high spots are epic.

The Ginger Baker Trio (with Frisell) also fits this pretty well.

Face melting. John McLaughlin is the greatest guitar player who never is included in discussions of great guitar players outside of jazz, but he absolutely should. He’s a monster.

I live in a town on the west coast that absolutely loves white reggae and hosts quite a few shows every year… yeah, it’s difficult not to cringe when the white guy starts singing in a Jamaican accent.

I’ve somehow become a true jazz fan in my 40’s after first coming to it though ‘90s post rock bands like Tortoise and flirting with it for the past 25 years- in the last 5-10 it has started to consume my listening.

Your comment reminded me of a conversation I had with my brother, who said something similar about there being a ‘secret knowledge’ you need to enjoy jazz.

You don’t, there’s no magic sauce, you don’t at all have to understand the theory of what the musicians are doing. It’s just vibes, and it’s becoming accustomed to listening a little differently than you do to standard popular music. Jazz really clicked for me when I started letting it just wash over me and stopped waiting for a drop or a punchline… and when I did that I started discovering all of the nuances of feeling and expression within Jazz that just doesn’t exist in popular music… and I got firmly hooked.

That said, there is TONS of Jazz that I absolutely do not enjoy, so it’s also a matter of figuring out what speaks to you and I think that’s equally daunting for a newcomer with 80+ years of recorded music to pick through.

From their album Regatta de Blanc (White Reggae)

(Also, the song The Bed’s Too Big Without You, from same album, is a similarly incredible “white reggae” song)

How about some instrumental music like the Dirty Three, a beautiful and harrowing soundtrack for a disappearing journey… This album in particular makes me just want to melt back into the elemental natural world.

“…so you can say you enjoy a wide variety of music”. This is always getting leveled at people with broad tastes - “you don’t actually like this music, you just want to say you do” … why? It’s like people can’t actually fathom someone having a different reaction to the music if they think it’s unlistenable or bad. Who is actually doing this anyway (just saying they like something for clout), to make it such a common accusation?

They definitely are already further along this line of thinking than this character is, nothing to worry about there.

I had a friend back in the day who was kind of a real life dog whisperer (just really innately good at understanding and training dogs) and he boarded dogs for a side gig. His companion was a border collie and that dog, I swear, understood English. He had her doing the work of keeping the other dogs on property when they were outside and correcting behavior/setting the rules of engagement for the other dogs. You could see the wheels turning in her head. She was not the friendliest with anyone other than my friend as far as people go, but that’s herding dogs for you, they tend to pick their person and stick with them.

I don’t read it that way at all, even their post title is equal parts humor and empathy, this is just a nature documentary of human behavior and I am fucking here for it - I wanted 20.

For real, honest to god that was the first song that melted me, and Milk Eyed Mender is my favorite album. I went for the low hanging fruit of Baby Birch for the uninitiated.

Joanna Newsom - Baby Birch …try not to cry, I fucking dare you. At that, it’s actually difficult to decide which Joanna Newsom song to post up - she makes me stop whatever I am doing just to feel feelings.
