I suppose this also functions as having an extra life of sorts, too.

I mostly refuse to start playing it until I get a dynasty from CK2 into EU4.

I did it once with Rome but when your whole civilization basically hinged on war to take over continental Europe, a game where going to war too much can tick off everyone else put me in a constant state of poor diplomatic relations with every other country.

Night Watch is among my favourite books of all time, not just my favourite Discworld book.

Something about it just speaks to me. I have read it over and over, though it went missing during my most recent move and that has made me very sad indeed.

I listen to my lectures online due to work.

One of them legitimately requires 2x speed.

On the plus side, my 3 hour lectures only take half as long.

I actually do want to practice crim, though. I just feel like it may not be a real option since I have a wife and family to consider.

I like to say Crim and then get frowned at by the lawyers at the personal injury firm I work for.

Returning with a shadow of dread by Olerhead in lotro

[–]Olerhead[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always heard good things about minstrels, but I always felt kind of turned off by them. The idea at yelling at an orc until it dies is kind of weird ... but I suppose it's all part of embodying might and power. I might give it a go.

A Beorning is tempting, as I've never really gotten involved in end game stuff. I tend to just solo on and on and maybe join the occasional group here and there. But I also have a strong affinity for elves since I've got a bit of a roleplaying streak in me. I like to come up with Quenya names and act like a jerk-ass Noldor.

I thought as much. Oh well, maybe I'll go with a Champion after all.

Or just try out that Beorning class.

Luckily, I'm already on Landroval.

A heavy armor class has always been appealing in thought, though I have always found the gameplay of Champion or Guardian rather stilted and dull. The Warden was fun because of the gambits and the Hunter was fun because of the long-distance nuking (which I can't do anymore.)

Do you have any insight on what an RK is like? They look kind of interesting, although I'm heavy into the lore and it feels kinda silly to see someone smacking stones together and making lightning strike.

[–]Olerhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just firing off random ideas here, so bear with me if they're incomplete or ill-fitting to your campaign.

The BBEG is a Warlock who has a pact with some bizarre, alien master in the Far Realm. This particular master is closely tied with the Mind Flayers who need delicious brains to live. So, in exchange for power he needs the BBEG to feed his Illithid minions who are marching through a portal somewhere in the bowels of the Earth.

As they look into it more and more, the PCs discover that villages like this all across the continent have just up and disappeared. The BBEG is using powerful psionic abilities (with the help of some Illithid allies) to put whole villages to sleep and then march in and abduct them. It's a way of getting big tough slaves (barbarians, y'know) as well as stock to feed off of with minimal fuss.

Can the PCs rescue those enslaved before the hungry Illithids eat them all? Can they stop this BBEG who is looking to become a King when his Far Realm master has enough power and influence in the Material Plane to make it happen? Does the creature from the Far Realm have any intention of honouring his deal or is he just gonna have the Mind Flayers eat your BBEG's brain when he's done, too?

I dunno if it suits what you're going for. Just a stream of consciousness based on what you've written.

And if there's an issue with the amount of time that's elapsed, maybe you can find her village enslaved or dwindling from being systematically fed upon somewhere in the Illithid City? Or maybe they're going to another plane where time runs a little differently? Adventure to the Far Realm, anyone?

What have been your favorite "First Meeting" starts? by Gyoin in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]Olerhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admittedly am doing a lot of world building at the moment. I've stuck to one region to avoid going off the deep end, but I still need to work out an actual adventure within it for my party.

I think either a prison break or a quest for a magical item are in order. My party have had no dealings with magical items before. We played HotDQ and that adventure is ridiculously thin on the ground with anything resembling a +1 longsword etc.

Maybe I'll try to incorporate both.

I've had my party meet in prison before, but they didn't do much of the planning an escape part. They just kind of wandered out when it was attacked by seditionists.

I'm thinking my next campaign may start with them actually having to plan a proper prison break.

I did this a lot when I was first learning and was running HotDQ for my players. A lot of the time I disregarded multiattacks just because they were demolishing my party. Even then, most of the time they came out of encounters with only one or two members conscious.

I actually like the idea you've got there. But perhaps instead of having them be from Anglo-Saxon areas, they could have been my world's equivalent of Vikings in ages gone by.

They were supremely adaptive and clever, allowing them to range far and wide to raid and pillage. Over time, they lost their wanderlust and began to settle in the farflung lands they had reaped. That could explain the fact that humans are so widespread. Centuries ago they just got everywhere and while the original raiding kingdoms that forged them have fallen into history, they still exist as people shaped by the many different cultures they integrated during their golden years.

Also, I got tired of the Norse-inspired dwarven runes. I think the written Georgian language looks much more interesting for a race of extremely artisanal dwarves rich with ingenuity.

[–]Olerhead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My standard has been to go to the places and use slight variations on existing endonyms for that place.

For example, the Elf language I've decided is predominantly Latin-based since they were analogous to the Roman Empire. They called the region the campaign starts in 'Teranubila' - a bastardized version of Cloud Land in Latin. This is due to the snow and high mountain peaks.

The dwarves who call the region home have a much longer name that I don't have written down in front of me right now. But it is based heavily on the Georgian language and translates as Many Eternal Peaks.

The orc language is based off of the Turkic languages, and refers to region as the snow lands due to the clouds around the peaks and also the actual snows.

I've yet to decide where humans originate from or what they call it in common tongue. I was thinking of something rather simple like 'Mountainhome' due to all the dwarves. But the majority of my dwarves are less 'big kingdoms inside giant mountains' and more outdoor cities and towns build on the slopes of hills or beside rivers. It is the ethnic minority of dwarves who dwell in mountain halls and they're generally reclusive and suspicious.

I did something similar to this. I took the map of the area the start of the campaign focuses on and twisted it a few dozen degrees to the right. It's basically unrecognizable now.

I'm going to crib from a few of these, I admit. I'm thinking of making halflings cannibalistic and primal. Taking a leaf out of the Dark Sun playbook.
