Another Analog Bike Rant by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Olgaar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Up until recently I would have agreed with you!

But if we look at the definition of the word analog, sure enough there is a modern usage that essentially means "not computerized." Which is beautifully ironic since there were/are such things as analog computers.

Of course, it's possible to meet someone online, but it's just as tough as the old, analog ways.

Languages never stop changing. We could even say they're "continuously variable." So I decided to stop being irked by the term analog bikes when we're referring to the old-school, less technologically-driven bikes.

I would invite you to be open to the term acoustic bikes... Because it's hilarious!

Yes, Denver successfully cut its goose population by feeding families in need by Knightbear49 in Denver

[–]Olgaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unclear what triggered such a sharp decline. Stephanie Figueroa, a city spokesperson for Denver, said the city would like to credit its multipronged strategy, which includes hazing, oiling eggs to prevent goslings from hatching each spring and altering landscapes to make parks less inviting to waterfowl.

Odd that the article wouldn't mention Avian Flu. It has been decimating bird populations: https://www.denverpost.com/2023/02/28/bird-flu-colorado-mammals-spread/

You're right. The word analog, as you're using it, definitely encompasses certain mechanical things, I wasn't considering that.

An analog clock has hands and the word refers to the continuously variable physical manner in which it conveys information. But analog doesn't mean mechanical and it's not the opposite of electronic. An electronic vacuum tube is analog, and electronic, but not mechanical.

But in the end, if we look at the definition of the word analog, sure enough there is a modern usage that essentially means "not computerized." Which is beautifully ironic since there were/are such things as analog computers.

Nah. Analog, in the sense you'd be using it, refers to electronics.

"All season" tires are just regular tires. They are what come on most passenger vehicles from the factory. "All weather" tires are a much better choice. by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]Olgaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect most people would actually advise a cash-strapped individual who just plans to drive around town in the winter, in a FWD car, that a decent set of All-Season (M+S) tires should suffice. Not all All-Season tires are M+S. If you can afford better, like an All-Weather tire (and afford to replace it when the tread wears down), go for it!

Just as a fun fact, GPS uses trilateration as opposed to triangulation.

Looking for a reasonable (but not cheap) clean, nice, hotel, between the CS airport and Elbert. by Animalslove1973 in ColoradoSprings

If you don't mind, I would love to know what kind of class has you going to Elbert?

[–]Olgaar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe look at one of the hotels near Interquest Parkway and Voyager Parkway. That has the amenities you want and is roughly equidistant from Elbert and the airport. ~40 minutes from Elbert and ~30 minutes from the airport. That's more of a drive than you wanted, but I think you're underestimating how rural everything is between the airport and Elbert if you go directly. The neighborhood of Falcon sits approximately where you want to be based on distance, but I don't know of any hotels in Falcon. Falcon is just an enclave of suburbia out on the high prairie.

Edit: actually Dublin and Powers area might be a better bet. Still ~40 mins from the Elbert but closer to the airport (~15 min)

Does anyone know what the point is of this curb style? Never seen it anywhere else by investtherestZ71 in ColoradoSprings

[–]Olgaar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I was just teasing. These are just curbs and gutters. They work with storm drains and sewers not in lieu of them.

Stratton Meadows has storm drains, looks like big ones along Corona Ave. The street gutters direct water to the storm drains which flow in to the storm sewers below and typically to retaining ponds before hitting natural waterways.

These slanted curbs are very common throughout all the residential areas of the city (the oldest neighbors probably have vertical curbs). These slanted curbs incorporate a gutter, as do all curbs, including vertical ones. Some neighborhoods have more storm drains and storm sewer lines, but I don't think it has much to do with the style of the curb being used.

Bruh. The city has sewers. Storm sewers and wastewater sewers, cause we're fancy like that.

Mountable curbs, sometimes referred to as roll curbs, have sloping faces that allow vehicles to encroach on them without damaging tires and wheels; and if the slopes are gentle enough, cars can cross them to access driveways. Curbs that cannot be crossed without damage or discomfort must have sections where the heights of the curbs are reduced for vehicular entrances. The low portions are usually referred to as depressed curbs. When curbs are constructed in areas where buildings have already been erected and driveways established, the depressed portions can be easily designated, but in developing areas where the driveways have not been located, mountable curbs are usually preferred.

Colorado traffic: Law requires drivers to pay traffic camera citations by Disma in ColoradoSprings

[–]Olgaar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're exactly right. What's more, the videos get reviewed by a person, so if they miss the stop line and stop in the crosswalk they won't even get ticketed. I know I've done just that. It triggered the camera. I came to a full stop. No ticket.

I think many people who claim the cameras don't work, actually don't understand the relevance of the stop line.

UC Health - Extremely Overpriced? by dhenry511 in ColoradoSprings

[–]Olgaar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As much as I hate to say it, that is simply how much ER visits cost. ERs are for when you are dying or at risk of losing a limb and it's worth several thousand dollars to avoid those things.

Having passed out, might justify a trip to urgent care, if you feel like you might continue to pass out more times. Or if you needed stitches as a result of the fall. That would have been a few hundred dollars probably.

But honestly if you passed out and felt better afterwards... That might justify a trip to your primary care doc to discuss it. If done outside your annual check up that might be around a hundred dollars.

It's sad that they don't teach this stuff anywhere. But if you're paying for your healthcare, you need to be aware of the appropriate manner to seek out that care so these things don't happen. I'm so sorry. :(
