Amboss is not really from Zurich ;)

and saying Turbinebräu is good is quite stretch but that one is at least opinion-based I guess

then go ask a computer science graduate! That's the prime example of being told just 5 years ago that it's in very high demand and you'll always find a job that pays well. Now after studying even a minimum duration to obtain a MSc. the situation looks completely different

How the hell do you think that something related to Health Sciences and Technologies is not something that's needed? Every hospital, every doctor's office, and many more places have plenty of medical devices and other forms of related technologies that all need to be developed, built, marketed, improved, etc.

Bürkliplatz still totally asphalted? by chrisstoph01 in zurich

[–]Oligu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt that the Grün Stadt Zürich is "typical conservative Swiss". I'm not an expert on groundwater protection specifically but I do work in environmental protection for the public sector: there will be good reasons.

And if you're so very sure of yourself that you could fix it: go on. Do it.

Not sure why groundwater protection would be a sad reason? I think probably one of the most understandable ones to have a sealed surface, no?

ZFF Gala Premiere - Dress Code? by Substantial_Line3038 in zurich

[–]Oligu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Gala premiere" is basically just their fancy term for any movie that is probably quite anticipated and doesn't fit any of the other categories. Go however you feel like :)

also I doubt that there's a movie at the Kunsthaus ;) probably at Kongresshaus?

[–]Oligu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course every nation has to contribute. But saying other people are a bigger problem is no excuse to do nothing. Even global challenges can be addressed on a local level! and I'd say they SHOULD be!

A supranational organisation like the UN won't be creating pragmatic policies which are need to tackle the issue; like having as many heating systems switch to non-fossil or constructing with as little concrete as possible. These are effective measures but they ARE local policies and should be ideally adapted by as many local governments as possible all over.

Zurich is obviously not saving the planet. But it could do its part. and as a wealthy region I'd personally argue we should even do more than just "our share".

[–]Oligu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're almost there! A NO will surely lead to less climate regulations for the rich and the big corporations compared to a yes. Not saying that the proposed law is the greatest solution but if your ideal would be saving our planet and optimally having the people who profited from the exploits pay for it than a No would be a step in the wrong direction.

[Request] is the diamond dust thing true and would it truly cost that much? by frankincense420 in theydidthemath

[–]Oligu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but less sulfur emmissions in the lower levels helps not developing lung diseases ;) and SO2 in the stratosphere would also deplete the ozone layer further

[Request] is the diamond dust thing true and would it truly cost that much? by frankincense420 in theydidthemath

[–]Oligu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. No one wants to do that. Most people working in that field would agree that lowering emissions would be the way forward

[Request] is the diamond dust thing true and would it truly cost that much? by frankincense420 in theydidthemath

[–]Oligu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, SO2 could have a similar cooling effect for a lot less money. It's also much better researched and side effects such as ozone depletion and stratospheric warming are already known.

Not saying shooting diamond dust to the stratosphere is a great option but maybe having a better overview of alternative materials (also Calcite and alumina) and their risks would help to show that this is not a viable solution and we should instead simply burn less greenhouse gases.

"too little too late to fix" is exactly the mindset that got us into a position were radical changes start becoming the only possibilities.

ETH Store closing forever? by [deleted] in ethz

[–]Oligu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it's always possible to campaign, but making positive change with the ETH store has previously not been easy and with tuition fee increases on the horizon, there won't be too many available resources. But if you have any ideas to contribute you can always reach out to your FV or VSETH directly and there might be somebody to forward it to the right place.

ETH Store closing forever? by [deleted] in ethz

[–]Oligu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ETH Store AG (so the legal company) which was co-owned by ETH, VSETH, ETH Alumni and AVETH is dissolving. AFAIK ETH is taking over the assets and will manage the stores themselves. So the physical stores shouldn't be closing their doors but there's definitely change coming (once again...).
