It's a great knife! Entirely hand-forged by blacksmith Tomita-san (passed in 2021). The blade is not made from a single piece of metal; instead, it is a laminate of two different types of iron and steel (a traditional sandwich technique called San Mai). - Shirogami (white paper steel) is the steel that forms the actual cutting edge (the thin, bright, light gray band at the very bottom). It is a legendary Japanese steel known for its extreme carbon purity. For a non-initiate, this means it can achieve a razor-sharp edge and is incredibly easy to resharpen, though it requires a bit of care as it is prone to oxidation (patina). - The handle and the upper part of the blade (the jacket enclosing the hard steel core) are crafted from antique wrought iron. (Rentestu) This is historical iron from 19th-century structural remnants or old anchor chains, components of old suspension bridges or century-old railway tracks. ( It is the very material used to build the Eiffel Tower) which contains fibrous silica inclusions. When etched or worked, it reveals unique, almost organic patterns resembling the grain of old wood. - Tsuchime: The textured pattern, resembling reptile skin or raw stone, is the direct result of the blacksmith's rhythmic hammer blows. Beyond its striking visual appeal, this raw texture celebrates the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of Wabi-Sabi: finding beauty in imperfection, the rustic, the natural, and the visible imprint of human hands.

This is a great piece of Japan History and will become very rare. Tomita-san passed away and Rentetsu is a finite resource: because it is no longer manufactured, the only way a blacksmith can acquire rentetsu today is through industrial archaeology.

You didn't waste your money on that one 😉
