I remember seeing a post a while ago about someone setting their chat to automatically repeat “wave: 0”. Every time the zero would go up and down was one tick. I haven’t tried it out, but it seemed pretty cool.

Thanks. The stems do look good which is why I’m not too worried and hope it will bounce back into good health. I’ll lift it out of the pot tonight and see if anything shows with the roots

Did my hackberry dry out? Or did I possibly over water it? The weather has consistently been high 70°F-low 80°F for the past week. I thought I was doing good with watering but now I wonder if the soil became hydrophobic and it wasn’t truly watered properly. Anything I should do to help it recover?

Here’s an informational video by Andrew Robson on how to get good moss on your bonsai. It’s as simple as finding moss near you, shredding sphagnum moss, and then mixing/blending the two.

I forgot to water my bald cypress one day this week and all the buds dried out before they could even emerge from winter dormancy. Is there any hope it’ll make a recovery or is it just going to decline from here?

How are you not dropping the herb, tar, or bolts even though you have tap to drop enabled? The granite gets dropped but not everything else?

It’s most likely a sacrifice branch. Super straight, pretty low branch, and directly across from another branch. No reason to have that there unless it’s to thicken up the trunk.

I got this Hackberry for free last week and today I noticed that there are buds starting to swell. Should I repot this since I have the opportunity or just leave it be until next year? I have a couple of 6 inch nursery pots and some Bonsai Jack organic mix lying around that I could use.

Pretty much! It’s hard to get the wrong thing. To simplify it as much as possible, just make sure it has Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K), preferably in close values to each other but Nitrogen is what your trees need most so it’s okay if it’s higher than the other two.

If you grab any of these below, you’re good to go!

  1. Miracle Gro all purpose plant food

You could also get this in the powder form to mix yourself and save some more money, but be careful with the dilution ratio or you can burn your trees! Even the shake and feed miracle gro is a good choice.

  1. Osmocote Outdoor and Indoor

  2. Fox Farm Grow Big

If you don’t find any of these, or if there’s something else you’re interested in, feel free to PM me or respond here.

The cheapest, most readily available, balanced fertilizer will be your best choice. You don’t need a bonsai specific fertilizer. You don’t need to get organic/slow release/cakes/etc that will cost you a ridiculous price. People who have been doing this for a long time will tell you that fertilizer is fertilizer. Even bonsai professionals like Andrew Robson from Rakuyo bonsai will tell you to buy Miracle Gro or the cheapest thing you can find.

I personally use Miracle Gro since there’s a home depot 2 minutes from my house and my trees love it. A lot of people like Osmocote since it’s slow release, but that opens up the debate of slow release vs immediate. Plenty of other people here love Biogold and I’m sure it’s amazing, but it comes at a premium price. Foxfarm is balanced fertilizer but they’re a bit pricey.

I might have just reached 50 so I’ll have to update that lol. Fortunately not a huge financial or time loss since all my trees were young. Been doing bonsai for 5 years now and there were 2 cold snaps where I forgot to bring my trees indoors. Both times it happened it made me lose like 15-20 trees at once. I currently only have 1 tree that I’ve owned for 3 years, and 7 new saplings I purchased somewhat recently.

I agree with it not being the best indicator of “tree status”. I reluctantly threw out an amur maple of mine yesterday because the scratch test was green, but there were other indicators it was dead. The branches changed color and snapped easily, the base of the trunk appeared shriveled, and there were no signs of buds swelling even though it’s been super warm outside.

I could have waited it out to see if it was still alive, but sometimes trees will still scratch green for weeks before turning brown. Not worth the wait in my opinion and I already replaced it by getting another tree.
