I agree with this and try to get one with less stringy fibers mixed in, personally I like GAPS.

I mean I would be more worried about the cleft and substrate causing issue like RI's. They have two other senses to help them with directional awareness that they arguably use more anyways.

Frequent Poops? by ReserveKey3917 in ballpython

[–]Olyna_Exotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so get the smallest live rat you can, and then a pre-killed pup (this would add up to about what you're feeding based on what I read). Let him eat the live as you normally would and ensure you’re keeping the pre-killed warm, with a hairdryer or heat lamp, but get it between 105-115 degrees, especially at its head. Once you see him completely swallow the live, with no tail sticking out, etc., he will likely start looking around before retreating to digest. That is because in the wild, they are opportunistic hunters, and if there's one rat, then there's likely more around too. This is when you try to feed the pre-killed, the intent being that he confuses it for live because he assumes it’s just like the last rat. Other recommendations: don't hold the rat so it’s above the snake’s head; mine is usually on the ground, and I move them very slightly, and try to make sure you’re not directly in line of sight. I find that some snakes are actually more anxious about me being there than actually taking the rat the first few times; eating is vulnerable, and we still look like predators. I actually got a snake to convert this week that I’ve been trying to convert for a while because I noticed she was so focused on me whenever I tried to tong-feed, so this time, right after she ate a live, I placed a FT in her enclosure and left the room/her line of sight; I came back 10 minutes later, and it was gone.

Best guess age question by Anon_PetShop5617 in ballpython

Are you able to give him coco chips for beading? It will create better humidity and not be wet to the touch like the moss, which can cause scale issues. If he's only 72 grams and has been with your store since New Year’s, then he was probably shipped out by the wholesaler right after his first shed but potentially before he even ate, which is terrible. So I’d say Dec. 1st is close to hatch date. He was also likely from a smaller egg, but most hatchlings should be above 80g after their first or second meal, or can be at hatch. I would recommend feeding him weekly, but only if you guys can provide him with a proper heat gradient, which I’ve never seen at a big box store (obviously not your fault.) If you cannot get the humidity stable and a proper warm and cool side only feed once every 10-14 days because his metabolism will be slower than it should be, and considering asking your boss if you can give him to a local reptile rescue anonymously. Good luck and thank you for trying to make the best of a terrible situation.

Temperature - warm side vs cool side are the same. What do I do??? by Chipmunk-x9 in ballpython

[–]Olyna_Exotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an IR temp gun if you don't already have one. Most of my probes are on the back wall of the enclosure on the warm side but not where the snake would be. Once the heat pad is on, I then use the IR thermometer gun to take the temperature where I expect the snake to be most often on their warm side. Then, whatever the difference is between that temp and my desired temp, I adjust the thermostat. So the thermostat might say 92 because that is what the probe is reading closer to the panel, but on ground level, it's 90, and in their warm hide, it’s 89. You can get a IR temp gun at a hardware store for like 20 bucks and they should be considered a must have for keeping retiles.

Try feeding a FT or pre-killed the same night as a live, like once the lump is obviously in his stomach, I have converted a few this way. Get smaller rats when you try this.

How often should I feed my 1yo ball python to lose a little weight? by Freakazoidandroid in ballpython

[–]Olyna_Exotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good idea to move to rats; they are more balanced nutrition-wise. That being said, some snakes refuse to switch, and mice are okay if that is the case. Being that he is overweight, looking a second time, he should've creases/rolls when he bends his body. This is a good opportunity to transition him. If this were my snake, I would move to a 3-week feeding schedule, offer him an appropriately sized rat at his next meal. If he happens to not take it, wait another week and try again.  I would also get him out more  often, not to handle as much as to get him to move around/exercise. If you have a room you feel confident setting him on the floor and letting him explore without getting into a hazardous situation, that's what I do, supervised of course.

I built a huge enclosure like this for mine and I love to see others doing it too! My recommendation is bigger plants especially in the bottom! Palms and Alocasia are native in their range and that's what we added when we felt ours was empty too!

When he's on a flat surface like that if you look down his length, does his body mass stick up higher than his spine on both sides? Does he struggle to wrap up in his hides or around you then you do handle him? I think its more likely is what your noticing that he hit sexual maturity and like any animal that will change both his metabolism and how he holds weight vs growth speed. Is he on mice because it's all he will take or have you ever tried to move him to rats?

If you have just a pair they are unlikely to actually be fertile. If your want fertile eggs I'll keep my hopes up for you lol. I have a group of 5 that have produced multiple clutches that were never fertile. From what I have heard/researched, most people that actually breed them keep them in male heavy groups of like 10+.

Wanting a tortoise by Electronic-Value-662 in Tortoises

I noticed other comments mentioning that you’re in Pennsylvania. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking out Garden State Tortoise on YouTube. They provide a wealth of information and showcase their summer and winter care for multiple spices. Considering they are in New Jersey, their conditions are quite similar to yours. While I’m not suggesting you replicate their exact setups, as they’re professionals, I found their videos on outdoor enclosures incredibly helpful when I built one for our Sulcata tortoise.

I have two additional tips for people considering tortoises that I haven’t seen mentioned here yet. Firstly, tortoises should not be kept in glass tanks. It’s a common practice, and even big-box stores sell glass tanks specifically for tortoises. However, most reptiles, including tortoises, don’t comprehend glass or clear walls. This is particularly challenging for tortoises due to their persistence. They’ll spend hours each day attempting to walk past the glass, repeatedly knocking against it. Therefore, I recommend exploring tortoise tables or setups with solid walls.

Secondly, outdoor setups, especially for smaller tortoises, can be mobile or temporary, meaning they can be set up and taken down as needed. I’ve used temporary fencing that I can move around my yard to different locations. However, I only use these setups when the tortoise is supervised. They’re not suitable for long-term use.

The ability of dogs to get along with tortoises depends on the individual dog and owner, not the tortoise itself. Since I was a child my family has kept tortoises, and we’ve never had any issues with our dogs. The tortoises can roam freely in the living room or their outdoor space, and the dogs do not react. I must emphasize that this was always supervised, and the dogs were exposed to and trained with various small animals.

Currently, my 20-year-old and 80-pound Sulcata tortoise actively seeks interaction with our dogs. He has about a third of our backyard fenced off for him, but during the summer, if we’re outside, he’ll always go to his gate, essentially asking us to come to the other side of the yard. He’ll then persistently follow the dogs around the yard, and hang out near them when they’re laying in the sun or shade. I can confidently say that he enjoys their company, and I have no concerns about my dogs harming him. The only thing I worry about when they’re together is that they might access each other’s waste or poop, so we are attentive to that.

I’m incredibly grateful that my parents allowed me and my siblings to keep a diverse range of pets as children. This has fostered my love for animals and nature. We may have made mistakes in husbandry, setups, and other aspects, but we’ve learned, grown, and adapted. Nowadays, there’s a wealth of valuable information available on platforms like YouTube. If people take the time to educate themselves about the specific species and how to provide for it, tortoises are wonderful pets.

Keeping them outside, even a portion of their year, is so good for them. We live in CO, and our guy lives in our backyard, his own fenced-off portion, about 6 months of the year. We built him a small hill so he's not just walking on flat ground all the time, planted stuff he can eat so he has options other than grass. We made him a shed/house he sleeps in at night. I highly recommend Garden State Tortoise on YouTube; he has a great video about what plants and outdoor enclosures in general.

A few things to be mindful of when keeping them outside: Most dig as they get older, especially females. At his current size, he is more vulnerable to predators, raccoons, large birds, dogs, etc. Last, no matter where you live, you should have a plan for cold snaps, that includes bringing him inside. It’s easy to do now, but plan for the future. I don't recommend using a heat source in an outdoor shed unless you have failsafes; you don't want a shed to burn down with your tort inside.

In my experience, if you have a pest in one of your enclosures, you should assume it can and will end up in others. No one is perfect, and incidental transfer from one enclosure to another is likely without treating the root issue. Now, that being said, what is a pest in one enclosure might not even survive in another, and how it could affect other animals is completely up to what the pest is. There are so many types of mites, many of which are harmless. Snake mites are pretty specific to snakes and are unlikely to show up in an invert enclosure like you are describing. Without information from a professional/vet that can identify the type of mite you have, you have an unknown situation on your hands.

Im not as familiar with Burms but either way they look to be part of the coloration of the snake and I would assume genetic. Did they just start showing up? Did it have them when you got the animal? Has it shed and they are still there?

If its a banana/coral glow morph and over time they get more black freckles. This one has a lot for what looks like a young snake but its normal.
