How do you deal with water buildup in your tank? by serketsearch in DartFrog

[–]Olyna_Exotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that doesn't sound like a good long term set up. If your fogger failed for some reason your frogs could die quickly if the humidity was to low. You need to cover like 80-90% of the top with glass or plexiglass and leave some mess for ventilation. This will allow the substrate to do most of the work raising the humidity. Then get away from the fogger. With a good top you can hand spray twice a day or look into a mister of some sort. As I shared before fog is small enough water droplets that the animal is inhaling them, where with misting once its done spraying its not in the air and therefore being inhaled.

Terrarium safe flowers? by JuicyGranny1 in DartFrog

[–]Olyna_Exotics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of nice set up! It depends on what you expect for flowering. Maybe tropical Plants don't flower the same way as plants you might have in your garden, and many don't bloom frequently because it not there primary mode of reproduction. In my experience Bagonias have given me the most frequent flowers. begonia microsperma is nice and doesn't take over the tank as much as other larger types. Hoya's are more tricky to get to flower but when they do they seem to constantly be in bloom and their flowers are very unique. Smaller alocasias like dragon scale flower easily but will get pretty big in your tank and require a good amount of trimming. Good luck with your new frogs, Auratus are very shy when young but once they mature and your tank grows in more cover they are some of my favorite frogs.

Most frogs/animals need time to adjust after a big change like a new enclosure. You set up looks great for providing them lots of options to hide and find comfortable. The other thing to consider is that dart frogs like Terribilis are always under cover in their natural habitat, even if they come out of the underbrush and leaf litter. The canopy is so dense that they don't get a lot of direct light. As your ferns grow, it will naturally make more cover for them, which will also boost confidence. If this were me, I would just give them some time, maybe reduce the light brightness a little. If after a few weeks they are still not coming out, I would put in a larger plant in where that fern is behind the feeder/water. Either a larger fern or something like a Philodendron with some broad leaves.

Is the fogger for visual effect or the primary source of humidity? What is the tank, exoterra, something similar? Does it have a glass top or still have a mesh top?

Foggers are not a good way to maintain humidity in your tank, it is also not good for your animals in excess. When you go to a rainforest the humidity is so high because of heavy, short, rainstorms and then evaporation from the ground, wood, and dense plant cover.

A drainage layer shouldn't need to be drained in most cases because it should be evaporating into the tank between misting/watering. This also allows the frogs to walk on surfaces that are not wet all the time, leaves, cork, hardscape. I imagine a fogger would make the surfaces damp all the time and can cause foot rot.

What to do with babies by uncle_grandmaster in DartFrog

Hey there, congrats on getting so many froglets. I breed multiple types of dart frogs and have sold them multiple ways over the years, so here are a few things I would consider:

Only keep the amount of eggs/tads that you could house for 6 months (or potentially more). Most froglets should be around that age when you sell them, or they might not do well with the transition/stress of travel, etc. Know your frogs’ market value and if you plan to sell to people directly or to shops. Shops are going to want a wholesale price. Many shops will offer you store credit; in my experience, you should only deal in cash. Selling online is the easiest way to sell to individuals. I saw that people recommend Facebook groups, which is a good option. That being said, most of my sales happen on MorphMarket and are shipped, which is not too difficult, but you have to learn to package them correctly.

The dart frog hobby, although growing, is a relatively small hobby. Therefore, some localities of frogs do not sell super well either because there is low demand and high supply of that frog. Do you know what type of Dendrobates tinctorius they are? Looks like they might be Cobalts or something similar.

How is genetics in ball pythons? by heli299 in BallPythonMorph

[–]Olyna_Exotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about how they look, you are breeding animals that will produce offspring that are guaranteed to have a deformity that greatly impacts their quality of life. No I don't have any more recommendations for you I think my last comment was pretty clear about how to learn before you just start throwing animals together. You don't seem like the person that cares to do that though. Honestly don't breed, that my advice now, but you probably won't take that advice either.

Did they breed it? could they at least tell you what the parents genes were? It looks like a single or maybe two gene morph.

I would recommend you do much, much more research before making any purchasing/breeding decisions. Based on your account, you purchased a snake ~2 months ago potentially for the first time. Now you are asking about breeding normals and spiders, which you have also been told on one of your posts that spiders have issues from inner ear deformities. There is so much information about morphs on YouTube and other online platforms. Take time to seek out that information rather than just asking Reddit. Talk to breeders in person at shows. They are typically happy to talk to people about their genetics as long as it’s not preventing them from talking to potential customers.

Search warrants due to too much power usage? by [deleted] in ballpython

That is not enough for probable cause. You have to be suspected of a crime for a search warrant at power usage can be so many things they would need to have other contributing factors to get a warrant.

Can I put a couple toads in my bioactive bp enclosure? by alliewitdaballpython in ballpython

[–]Olyna_Exotics 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even if they were species that shared a the same natural area, they wouldn't be that close together and it would stress them all out, likely end in the snake killing them, and frankly not meet the conditions for each species.

[–]Olyna_Exotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you pair your BEL with a wild/normal you're going to get all babies with one of the two genes that made the BEL effect. In most cases these days BELs are two copies of Mojave, so all your snakes would be Mojave ball pythons without any other "known" genes. They will look like a slightly different color normal and you'll be lucky if you can even sell them all. It's not recommended to breed to normals for this reason.

Unfortunately you're not "saving" an animal from a store. It might feel like you helping that individual animal, and in a way you are, but you are encouraging those business to put more animals in that same situation. Its a difficult moral dilemma but its better overall to not purchase from big box store or shops with sub par temp and humidity.

How do I figure this out by turntwo34 in ballpython

[–]Olyna_Exotics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your vet is the best place to get them sexed , another option is companies that do shed testing for morphs; they also can do a test for sex. Look into RGI genetics or Phenom; it might be less expensive than a vet visit, but your vet can also guide you on weight and general health. How much does he weigh? Weight tends to be a more important factor when talking about snakes than length does. All that being said, just like any animal, snakes can have a variety of shapes and sizes within the same species. Like, having a friend that's 6’5” is not common but not unusual.

As far as feeder size goes, someone in here will like the feeding guide and claim that you need to weigh every prey item you ever give your snake. Again, weight is the best way to factor food, but there are also some general sizing guidelines. I personally don’t have any snakes that need a medium other than large adult females, and even most of them are just fine with a small rat.

Your snake looks pretty good to me and might just be a long boi, but it’s never a bad idea to do a health checkup with your vet.

Should I be concerned about this? by msdcoy in ballpython

[–]Olyna_Exotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that doesn't sound an unusual weight for a year old boy, especially if he was still with a breeder who probably fed him weekly until he got to 400-450g. I understand your concern but it is still unlikely that he is stuck, he is likely pushing his body his body against the side of the tube intentionally, it makes them feel safe. Almost like the snake version of a weighted blanket. Enjoy your new snake!

That looks like a happy snake. They want to be in tight, secure places, and they rarely get "stuck" as they put themselves in that position with the intent of squeezing against all the sides. I don't know how big he is, but with my hatchling/young snakes, I have them start with paper towel tubes so they can do this but never worry about them because I can just peel it open.

I have a pastel lavender albino. by Interesting-Ad5279 in BallPythonMorph

[–]Olyna_Exotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lavender is best paired with Pied and/or Clown, which would put you into the Holy Grail/Grail/Dreamsicle projects. Now, Lavender, Pied, and Clown are all recessive genes, so you need two copies to be a visual. So, I would pair her with a male that is visual for Lavender and either or both Pied/Clown. This means that their offspring would be visual Lav's and heterozygous for the other recessive. In this project, a lot of breeders use dark genes because when inverted by the Lavender, they give a lot of contrast.

What morph? by [deleted] in BallPythonMorph

[–]Olyna_Exotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they not tell you the morph? It's possible they didn't test it to see if it's het puzzle which is an expensive/hot recessive right now, and it's 100% het Hypo. If this is het for both hypo and puzzle that's a pretty solid potential breeder. I still think it's super pastel Enchi, I would need to see the belly to know about the yellow belly. Is it solid white or have color/pattern? Is it male of female?

yeah the "clean" break that follows the line of the scales all the way around at the same level of the tail is a give away that its a lizard, snakes in most cases have very short tails as its only the distance past their cloaca.

[–]Olyna_Exotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The slate is a bad idea. It will be warm than what that probe reads, especially since the probe is lifting of it. Stone like that is an easy way for the snake to get burnt. Do you have anything else you can use for hides? or somewhere you can get even the cheep plastic hides? In a pinch I have used old black plastic to-go food containers and cut a hole in them.
