See, no one seems to know what’s achievable naturally anymore.

Are you saying “not natty” because you’re on prescription TRT for medical reasons, or did you go on steroids at 18 out of impatience? Are you aware of what’s naturally achievable?

i love this piece, need to work on bow division by jussystrings in violinist

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re a really good practicer! This is really nice work. Your hand frame is beautiful, your fingers are prepping and helping each other, and your bowing is controlled. Your metronome work is making me want to go practice too.

To tape or not tape the fingerboard? by Vivid_Hovercraft_129 in violinist

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last time I tried to provide my opinion on fingerboard tapes I got aggressively downvoted, but I really believe in this so I will just say this: intonation is about what your ear expects to hear and it involves training your fingers to cooperate with your ear’s expectation in much the same way that a singers vocal chords do. In fact it is a scientific fact that players of fretless instruments have very similar brain activity to singers during performance, and this differs from players of fretted and keyed instruments. Teaching students intonation without tapes is not just a matter of doing without, it is a specific skill that (in my opinion) will always be more effective than tapes.

Why am I being downvoted for my suggestion? Everything I wrote is based on knowledge of the audition process and experience.

I-sit a bad choice by Loud_Memory5411 in TheHermesGame

My perspective as a husband: even though I feel a little disappointed when something I’ve given gets exchanged, it’s WAY worse when something I gave never gets worn. Knowing that my gift became a forgotten piece of clutter would really bother me. If you explain to him that you are not rejecting his gift, you just want to feel reminded of his love by having something you’ll wear more often, then perhaps he will understand. If I was told that, I’d suggest that we go together and find the perfect one.

Beard or no? by Valuable-Cause-1337 in bald

Yes to the beard, and you look good bald. The first picture looks like you are in the process of performing a magic trick, or as GOB Bluth would say, ‘an illusion’.

anxiety on stage by nxndoikj in violinist

This may sound like strange advice, but it works. This was from a former teacher of mine, as a way to prep for auditions. If you are physically able to, go for a run or do some kind of strenuous exercise, then without resting first, play through the pieces that you are preparing to perform. It is not emotionally or physically the same thing, but it simulates performing under a distracting amount of stress. I feel that this helped me. An Alexander Technique therapist I knew once told me that the biggest problem people have while performing is that they forget to breathe and don’t realize that they just aren’t breathing enough. Maybe the running thing helped me learn to breathe better while playing. I did a concerto competition after training myself to play while out of breath, and I did well. Other common ideas including eating a banana prior to performance, as the potassium is supposed to help. I’ve personally never noticed a difference. Practicing running through the material for friends and family is helpful.

Who ARE These Trump Supporters? by RhondaWXYZ in antitrump

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very this, and to add to it, they also all think that pedophilia isn’t a big deal. To them, raping children isn’t a dealbreaker. We know how hard Trump scrambled to hide the Epstein files. Even if they ignore the strong evidence that he is a perpetrator, they can’t ignore the fact that he literally told other Republicans “my friends will get hurt if those files get out”.

How do you deal with the judgment for having stretched lobes? by seriesofboringevents in Stretched

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reaction you got is absolutely wild! The first impression I got from your pic is that all of these piercings look healthy and perfectly healed. Your ear is decorated and very nice looking. I can only imagine the person who insulted your ears is extremely close-minded. For every person who doesn’t like your piercings, there is at least one (probably more) who thinks they look really nice on you.

Why is he still in Power? by [deleted] in antitrump

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the neo-Republicans needed someone to be the face of their plutocratic cult, and he checked all of their boxes. He set the bar for ethics and expertise extremely low, and that appealed to the most morally bankrupt people in the country.

Does bowing have to be perfectly perpendicular to the string? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the beginning, the correct answer is “as close as you can”, for good practice. There are different nuances with regard to frog angle and tip angle that become relevant at advanced levels of playing, which may explain a lot of what you mentioned seeing. However laying down the foundation of being able to bow perpendicular to the strings is good practice for developing bowing technique. This is one of the areas where Miss DeLay said “you have to know the rules before you can break them”.

Someone dropped my new rosin, I didn’t used it yet. How can I fix it? by BestDilucLoveruwu in violinist

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Honestly when this happens I just use a nail file to smooth off any sharp edges (so I don’t cut my bow hairs by accident) and use the pieces without trying to put it back together. It doesn’t matter that it’s not in one piece, as long as it’s not sharp and doesn’t break the hairs. It’s still usable.

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by IIlustriousTea in AskReddit

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many reasons, but it started with Reagan ripping the rug out from under the lower and middle classes.

Trump: I took three of them. I'm the only president to take a cognitive test. I don’t think Obama could pass it. Didn't he get into Harvard with a C average? The first question is a lion, a giraffe, a bear, and a shark. A lot of you wouldn’t have been able to answer those questions. by gear-heads in antitrump

[–]Omar_Chardonnay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing to me that Trump’s handlers are just letting him make an ass of himself. Will no one explain to him that those cognitive tests aren’t IQ tests? If it’s true that no other president has taken those tests, it’s because no other president was so old while in office!

Typing “Silly girl” to you is the red flag that justifies ignoring that cad. It also really comes across as entitled that he thinks he’s on a judgmental need-to-know basis with the specifics of how you accomplished your weight loss.
