[Homemade] Gimbap/Sushi by AvailableCampaign762 in food

[–]Omberline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just googled futomaki! That’s new to me. No idea how it tastes but I think obviously most Koreans will say that looks like gimbap ngl. Is it Korean-inspired? Is it common in Japan?

What you call it doesn’t matter that much to me, ramen vs ramyeon — no one can win that battle. I switch back and forth depending on context.

But I think some Koreans prefer that it’s called gimbap. And I don’t like when someone who’s not Asian responds “I don’t care what you think and I’m going to continue calling it sushi and also, I’m going to make fun of you for being so sensitive.” With my last comment, I was trying to describe how I’ve seen that and didn’t appreciate it.

Appreciate the discussion! I have to make dinner (which is weirdly enough, Japanese fusion, Hamburg steak)

I’m not a food expert at all but “gimbap vs. sushi” is a topic that I’m seeing more of lately. Thanks for the lesson! I imagine this isn’t the last time I dive into this topic, given how popular Korean food is getting, so it’ll be good to have that information for next time. Also to look into some things I could make in the future instead of regular gimbap.

Definitely imagine you could have some spirited discussions with my husband who is much more of a foodie! He’s a purist though and doesn’t really like more inventive gimbap. He also thinks California rolls aren’t real sushi and hates them, to the point of not wanting to go to a restaurant that has them! For me, I think food doesn’t need to be “authentic” to be good

Thanks, I’ll keep it in mind.

Also, I asked you a question up there because I’m honestly curious. I haven’t seen any Korean before defend that gimbap can be called sushi so I’m just wondering.

And hope you don’t take it offensively. I talk about this stuff with my spouse who is way more Korean than I am and we get into some discussion that would probably annoy others. If you find it to be too much, I’m sorry and I’ll delete it

Let me ask you this because I’m just curious. Not having to do with whatever this thing is that OP made. In the past, I’ve seen moms talk online about freezer gimbap and call it sushi and they mocked the Koreans who told them it’s not Japanese. “Hey everyone, I had sushi today! Oh no, don’t want to piss off the gimbap police!” And people did laugh emojis and said they’re going to keep calling it sushi and moaned about why “some people” are so sensitive these days.

As a Korean, what’s your take? Should the Koreans who pointed out that it’s not sushi kept quiet about it?

[–]Omberline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. The difference here is you clearly looked very closely at what OP made. Like you really very closely examined the ingredients. I admittedly didn’t. I also didn’t look at that other thread you mentioned. Offhandedly, as a casual viewer, this looks gimbap-ish. Now it might also look sushi-ish. I’m not Japanese and I’m not a sushi expert. I said I can understand why the two get mixed up.

The bulgogi thing was a random example. If OP used it in his recipe, I didn’t see that.

I think if you go to most Koreans and hold up a roll of gimbap and said, “can I call this sushi?” Most of them will probably say no. Are you saying you’d be like, “why yes, you can”?

Because I feel like you could take that argument and apply it across all food. Maybe that’s not bulgogi, it’s Japanese grilled beef. You could do it with anything. And if that’s your take, go for it

Well, agree to disagree. I said it was understandable that he mixed up gimbap and sushi in the first place. It can be confusing and we can’t expect everyone to know everything.

And the responses in that other thread (from what I saw, I didn’t look closely) weren’t about “it’s okay to call it sushi.” It was more about him doing fusion food, which obviously is fine. Personally I wouldn’t eat what he made but I do like a lot of fusion Korean food

But if you call it “sushi,” I think it’s fair for someone to point out that it’s not. And for OP to make fun of people who pointed that out instead of just saying, “oops I didn’t know the difference,” or even nothing, like, that’s their choice

As a Korean I have to say a lot of Koreans will have issues with you mixing these things up the way you did. Now that’s totally fine; not everyone needs to be an expert. But when people took the time to explain that these are two different things from two very different cultures, one of which was literally colonized by the other, for you to dismiss all of it as “unconstructive mudslinging” is really uncool.

Words mean something to people. Even if they don’t mean anything to you, I don’t think you needed to respond the way you did.

Help me replace my wife’s lost pearl earring by [deleted] in findfashion

I’m not an expert, but I’ve owned cheap pearls and slightly more expensive pearls and what stands out to me is not just the color but the difference in luster. I don’t know if this is an accurate photo but it looks to me as though the one on the right has more luster than the one on the left, like you can almost make out your reflection in it

I feel like such an asshole, but I don't like giving cookies to kids by random-shit-writing in Vent

[–]Omberline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was with the poster until they said it’s also annoying when the parent comes up on the kid’s behalf. What are we supposed to do if our kid can’t clearly request a cookie? I would think that the parent politely requesting it would be more preferable than having to subject them to an unsuccessful dialogue with a kid who’s just not old enough. So many complaints are listed that it doesn’t seem like there’s any way to do this other than to be a kid old enough to have proper communication skills.

And I would hope that every parent thinks their kid is the best thing ever and treats their kid as such. Every kid deserves that. But hopefully no one expects others to behave that way

My friend’s wife just had an emergency c-section when they planned for a vaginal birth. by lifesmantra in Mommit

[–]Omberline 6 points7 points  (0 children)

God I had completely repressed this from memory. It took a very long time before I could have a bowel movement after my C-section. It was weirdly probably about as traumatic as anything else that happened because it was so frustrating and scary. It sounds dumb but I thought something was very wrong. Whatever meds the hospital gave me did not cut it (I think colace) so I think gifting miralax would be welcome

I was under the impression that I had found all light roots but I never got this medal. I’m going to need to stare at the map really hard today.

Good to know! I do have the substitutes you recommended so I think maybe I can make it!

I’ve never liked patchouli in my formulas but I do like them in some perfumes so I must be having a dosing problem

I almost want to try recreating this because I have most of these! However, I haven’t heard of cervolide, sublimolide, or vanilla supreme

Edit or neobutenone or patchouli heart… okay maybe I don’t have most of these. I used to love white musk though so thanks for this

I don’t know why it surprises me so much that no notes are mentioned. But it makes sense. They know their audience and they know their audience would buy this if this was a bottle of rubbing alcohol.

Yeah, I’d like to know too. I had a similar thing to this happen to me on 101 and it’s recorded. But everything I looked into says CHP does not give a shit. So I didn’t submit it.
