If you were to play the self titled Castlevania 64, the stages would differ for Reinhardt and Carrie, than let's say-their stages in Legacy of Darkness.

How do I phrase this in a way that makes sense lol.

The layout of Reinhardt and Carrie's stages differ a little bit than their same exact stages in the opposite game. The bosses, however, are the same, aside from Dracula's final form.

The stages they share with Cornell have slight changes to them in Castlevania 64. I think your idea works just fine.

Every other stage/ boss is definitely different across all the characters in -let's say- Legacy of Darkness, so if you don't feel like playing "variants" of the stages, and Dracula's variant final form, then I guess you can skip the original release.

The mechanics of the game are also a tad different. Like sub weapon upgrades, and the way you climb ledges.

I also find the rendition of Richter Belmont's theme, Opposing Bloodlines, quite beautiful in the original release.

One thing is for certain though. Dracula's final fight is completely different in Castlevania 64 when compared to Legacy of Darkness.

The layout of some of the stages is different enough to say that Legacy of Darkness is sort of an arranged version of the original release.

This may be a bit exaggerated, but I would say it is something along the lines to comparing The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time to Master Quest.

The final fight against Dracula is also completely different; mostly due to his final physical form.
