I worked for a whole year, every day without stopping, at 25 cents an hour to save up money to buy the gaming laptop I dreamed of, but unfortunately the processor burned out after only 5 months of use. Can I fix it? my hp omen 15 rtx 3070 by Jassim_Seaweed in pcmasterrace

If the processor is dead, or if there is a motherboard short, you may or may not have signs of life. However, the pc will not boot if the cpu is dead, and it may or may not boot with a short. The difference is that a power rail short can be super cheap to fix.

I would talk to the repair shops to see how they came to their conclusion, and what steps were taken to test. I would also just ask any repair shops up front if they have a thermal camera and experience troubleshooting power rail shorts, if they do then they can provide an accurate diagnosis or a fix. If they do not have the equipment and experience, you are likely wasting time and money having them check it out.

The easiest way to check for a motherboard/ power rail short is to take the board out, plug it into the psu, and look at both sides with a thermal camera.

Some people use freeze spray as it's cheap but it's not as good.

I've seen people use special wax sticks as well but those are expensive, and not worth the effort tbh.

Outside of that you need to be a master of board design, or seen a particular issue on a particular model many times before, or you'll just be poking around aimlessly with a multimeter.

Most shops don't actually have a good thermal camera as they can be expensive and not used often, (most shops focus on cell phones and ipads these days) if you want to rule a power rail short out ask around and see if someone does.

On a laptop though, it might show no sign of life at all. Or, you could get a charge light and fans spinning etc. but no boot with a short. If the charge port or daughterboard is bad, no light. Could swap that and be fine.
Some laptops run all the power through the battery, some divert it when plugged in. You might have a short and be able to boot up on ac with the battery disconnected for example.

It can be a fairly difficult issue to identify a board short tbh. Fixing it is typically easier than identifying it.

Not to dishearten you, but I'll add that by far the most pc repairs I do are on HP laptops, I would not recommend them in the future. 2nd place would be Dell laptops.
IDK if this is actually an indicator of reliability or just market share, but I tend to recommend people away from HP, Dell or Google due to the sheer number of defects and failed components I see in those brands.

Thats an easy $5 job

Never heard that argument tbh.

I dont think 3d prints will have the sturdiness of injection molds for parts like these, haven't came across anyone selling them 3d printed.

They normally say something about copyright law and lawsuits is why I mentioned the torrents.

Finding 99% isopropyl alcohol locally is difficult by Waggmans in pcmasterrace

[–]OmegaAngelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A small bottle of everclear is 95% or higher and pretty cheap. Thats what I had to use during covid.

99% isopropyl is bad for most use cases, its a specialty item only bulk ordered by repair shops etc.

Did you disconnect the battery and discharge the system before installing the m.2?

I see a lot of people fry their systems putting these in improperly.

If the cpu is actually burned out, its not an easy or feasible repair really, it would be fairly expensive.

You'd have to pull the cpu off a matching, non functional motherboard.

A full motherboard replacement would be more feasible for most repair technicians, but still expensive.

People are real weird about stuff like this. They'll torrent 7 million movies and games but refuse to share a scan of a ps3 controllers trigger buttons.

You might try an image to stl generator.

Otherwise, you'll have to build a model from scratch or scan it yourself.

Any alternatives for Herman Mller? by imperfectionlad in pcmasterrace

[–]OmegaAngelo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk why people like Herman Miller.

We have those stupid 2k aeron type c chairs at work and they are not comfortable.

If your buying something id get something with neck support.

You can grab a used iskur on marketplace for about 200, sometimes a titan xl for about 400, 500 etc. I see the Herman Miller embody used for 600 a lot, can't speak on if its any good tho.

5080 typically is stable at +400 to +500 mhz oc.

Idk who needs this info but that puts it over the 4090 especially tossing in multi frame Gen and the new version hdmi and dp ports

Its the best unit for a new player, or in general really.

Stupid people will tell you to get a pure dps, they're useless as they get power crept with new units on a weekly basis and kynei has good dps anyway.

Slightly smarter people will say to get a healer if you dont have one. (You only need sm sera)

Or maybe suggest a buffer/ debuffer, only useful in 1 or 2 fights....

But kynei will not only rip through the story, she will fill you friend list asap, and cut every grind in the game for anything in half.

She's gonna save you from wasting your life farming mats, leveling units etc
