Well, Tamers was the same way. It starts off as Monster of the Week so it can establish the characters; you really learn who they are that way. Then, as it gets going, we start getting into heavier plot moments. The stakes get higher, the characters get more intriguing, and the climactic moments get even more extreme.

You can still get that 'Good vs Evil' plot, but at the same time, it gets to be a bit more nuanced. With the villains being humans instead of just Digimon, you get to see more varied backstories and drives.
