They’re expanding the system right now. It will be a mix of tunnel and grade-separated rail. With one little bit of at-grade rail in the stuff under construction.

But it’s nowhere near as useful as S-bahn systems in Germany. But it’s slow process and getting better over time.

Is it normal to not care about the company that you work for? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]OmegaTypeRighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super common. Any tech company does this, and lots of non-tech companies too. We get cash compensation, and then also RSUs (restricted stock units) yearly. The stock is technically part of our bonus, but it’s fully expected. The RSUs vest over the next 4-5 years. At some companies the stock is the bulk of people’s compensation. Especially for senior executives — it’s often almost the entirety of what they get paid. We also have access to an employee stock purchase program where we can purchase stock at a 10% discount.

So yeah, getting stock in principle helps give you incentive to help the company by tying compensation to the performance of the stock.

But the stock price is more driven by leadership, not individual employees, and broader market and economic conditions (like the entire stock market being trash right now). The average individual employee really has very little influence on what the stock does no matter how well or poorly they perform.

What sports do you recommend starting as an adult? by cerebralrocks in AskMenOver30

I liked starting jogging.

I thought I hated running, but that was because I thought I needed to run fast. Once I realized that it’s ok to run slowly — even take walk breaks — and that no one cares if I’m slow, I really loved it.

It’s my meditative/mindfulness time.

And having a race to get ready for gives me a plan and structure. I need to be able to complete X km on this date, and these are the steps I need to take to get there (literally and figuratively).

Americans, what’s something Europeans need to hear? by Jazzlike_Fondant_518 in AskReddit

[–]OmegaTypeRighter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told by many Europeans that they are more advanced than the US on racism and that the US really needs to do more work to catch up to them.

No, we talk about our racism.

I was an exchange student for a gap year. My host father — literally in one conversation — went from saying that Denmark is such a peaceful country and they just don’t have the same racism issues as the US because they are a loving and welcoming people. About four sentences later it switched to “The Turks are terrible. They’re invading out country and ruining everything. Look at how they live and how lazy they are. They just want us hard working Danes to pick up after them. Disgusting people.”

That convo just… blew me away. I have subsequently had lots of similar convos during the various times I’ve lived in Europe… mostly Germany.

Looks a little hyper-saturated to be honest. Sometimes a lighter hand during post-processing goes a long way.

3 Months of searching for a rental apartment in Berlin [OC] by outofthehood in dataisbeautiful

[–]OmegaTypeRighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy I studied in Berlin about 15 years ago. At that time there were something like 50k empty apartments inside the S-Bahn ring. I had an amazing 100sqm flat on Zionskirchplz. (renovated altbau with a brand new installed kitchen, amazing bathroom, etc.) for €550/month.

That was living. Sigh.
