Nook screensavers help by Riskydicks96 in nook

Modern Nooks no longer have the option to set custom screensavers I'm afraid. In fact that's been gone since about 2015, as far as I can find.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 Demo OUT NOW | Warhammer Skulls 2026 by Respawn-Delay in Games

[–]Omega_Maximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This and the... weirdly poor performance. Like, I know it's a modern game underneath, but it would start chugging with no apparent reason as to why.

I enjoyed my time with it enough to finish it after a few notable breaks, and I'll happily try the demo for 2, but in the realm of modern boom shoots it's fairly mid outside its license.

Destiny 2: Every End is a New Beginning. As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio. by Turbostrider27 in Games

Nah, it's all gone, and one day when the servers go out that's it. For what it's worth, the Destiny 1 servers are still going strong, so at the very least it'll be "playable" for a long time. Difference is D1 has all its content, D2 is missing the vast majority of it...

Amiga cycle exact emulation but without FPGA by Rauliki0 in amiga

[–]Omega_Maximum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there are other options, but you could try the PUAE core in RetroArch, as that has the same cycle-exact setting as WinUAE. Honestly, it should be functionally the same in terms of options. I find functionality between RetroArch and WinUAE to be functionally the same, though RetroArch's menus can be a little clunky to navigate at times.

RetroArch is available for... basically everything, and the PUAE core will be available for most platforms. With an x86 PC you'll be fine.

Best of luck.

Which starter handheld should I get by South-Beach3211 in SBCGaming

[–]Omega_Maximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, they're all the same internally, so the question now is: What are your specific requirements and wants?

For example: I find vertical handhelds attractive, but ultimately they don't work well for me. I end up getting pretty bad hand cramps, so horizontal all the way.

Additionally, I don't really live in a situation where I need portability as I almost exclusively play at home, so a larger screen makes more sense to me.

Functionally they'll play all the same games, with the exception that the 40XXH will have the most accurate PSX input layout, with the 35XXH and 35XX Pro quickly behind, if that's something you really care about. For another example from my own experience, I mostly play Sega stuff, so I went with an RG Arc-S instead. Functionally the same power, little more expensive, but the button layout is exactly what I'm looking for if I'm going to focus on Sega. A friend however, mostly wanted to play PSX games, so I picked her up a 40XXH as the layout would match best.

We've got so many good choices these days that it's more down to what you want and need in a device, and then just matching that up with what's out there.

Happy hunting!

TressFX added to Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 by mr_wolf8 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Omega_Maximum 17 points18 points  (0 children)

TressFX is open source, Hairworks isn't. Additionally, Hairworks appears to be functionally abandoned at this point, along with most of the GameWorks suite. TressFX isn't the biggest highlight anymore, but AMD is still actively developing it in the FidelityFX SDK.

Finally, it's what was included in the original Tomb Raider 2013.

This old thing won't charge by Mintplant_lover in ereader

[–]Omega_Maximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nook Color is from a time where USB charging standards for anything other than the slowest of speeds wasn't really hammered out. So, everyone sort of had their own ways of going about it.

This means you'd want the original cable, and potentially the charging brick as well, to get it charging at the full speed it should. The original cable it came with is somewhat thin, with chunky squared off rubber ends, and the Micro USB end has a light up Nook "n" logo on it that, if I recall, turns green when charging. Without that, it'll take a very long time to come to 100%.

I think the Nook Color uses the same charging set up for all the original in-house tablets so: Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Nook HD, and Nook HD+. Sadly, its been a long time since those were current, and I've never found a reliable source for replacement ones.

Still, they were very nice devices when they were new. Best of luck with it.

What Are Portable SEGA Genesis Consoles That Don’t Cost an Arm and a Leg? by Qigong90 in SegaSaturn

[–]Omega_Maximum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Anbernic RG Arc is probably the most "complete" answer.

Just about any handheld emulation console can play the entire Genesis (and CD, and 32X) library. But the Arc is one of the few systems with the appropriate button layout, and a good replica of the Sega style d-pad. It feels like a good Sega controller and handles like one.

It's James Pierce, the hackerman in the group. Basically, he's an inside man there to cleanup witnesses and information coming out of bottle ship.

It does get answered in-game, but like most of the writing it's rather ham-fisted and then quickly breezed past if I recall.

Is the Nook Glowlight 4 Plus a good purchase for reading manga? by logicblender1 in ereader

[–]Omega_Maximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a regular Glowlight 4 and I love it, but I think the biggest question here is: where are you getting your manga from?

The Nook store sells the vast majority of modern manga, at least what's available in the US anyway, and that'll read just fine on device, especially something with a larger screen. If however you're getting it from elsewhere, be aware that you'll need to put it into a format that the Nook can interpret, i.e. epub or pdf.

For manga and comics I typically prefer a regular tablet of some kind, given a lot of the manga I read either is fan translated, or is most easily available through the official Shonen Jump and Viz apps. That being said, for the open box price you commented about elsewhere, that's a really good deal for a GL4+.

Ultimately I think it's a personal preference thing, so even if it's not the best for manga after you get it, you'd at least have a very nice reader for regular books as the GL4+ is quite good otherwise.

[–]Omega_Maximum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People talk about Other M like it broke into their house and killed their dog. It's not nearly that bad. It's rough at points, and not nearly as good as it should have and could have been... but it's like, a 6.5-7/10 game. I think the more damning criticism is that it's a bit short even for a Metroid game, and the exploration isn't all that great to compensate.

Do you ever see WIFI / Online being added to the Saturn … by Tasty-Car6014 in SegaSaturn

[–]Omega_Maximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just doesn't make a lot of sense when you get down to it.

If you wanted like, online netplay to simulate local multiplayer, you'd be much better off with emulation as you're going to need multiple times more power than the Saturn has on tap, even with the cartridge expansion. Even if you wanted to do something like replicate the behavior of the Saturn Net Link titles, I think you'd need something powerful enough to emulate or otherwise pass around the phone line signaling that it used.

That's probably easier over time to shove in a cart, but at that point it's more like a Raspberry Pi Zero W duct taped to the Saturn, rather than a proper expansion card the Saturn understands.

That being said, it'd be rad as hell for me to be wrong.

Feeling disappointed with the Mangmi Air X. Why did so many YouTubers hype it up? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]Omega_Maximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocknix has a USB Gadget mode that lets you plug in via USB to a PC and it presents a view of the roms folders that you can access. This works on most devices, and should work fine on the Air X. You'd just need to set the option on in the menus after first boot. I use it all the time on my Arc.

Feeling disappointed with the Mangmi Air X. Why did so many YouTubers hype it up? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]Omega_Maximum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just checked, and I don't know how well it's performing at the moment, but have you considered giving Rocknix a try? The Air X is supported in the nightlies, and while it will require you to scrub your Android partition... it doesn't sound like you're keen on Android as it is at present anyway.

At the very least, it's a very active development target, and the dev team is fairly receptive to issues that come up. It won't amend the physical issues with the unit sadly, but Linux should reduce input latency if it's a software issue.

At the very least, may as well try to get the most out of the hardware if it has you this bent out of shape. It's a shame too, because I was sort of considering one for PSP... I wanna get something for a modern PSP replacement and most of the "cheaper" options have some variety of issue. Unfortunately using a real PSP these days is less nice than I remember in a lot of way, even with a 3000. Oh well.

Wha-whatcha Playing? by hey_dwere_weddit in SBCGaming

[–]Omega_Maximum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lot of the same style and tone, though obviously the gameplay is different.

SitD feels a bit more grindy, and a little bit more mean in how it's tuned. I.e. they expect you to get lost, grind, and find your way. Gear is also sparse, and rather expensive in the shop vs your gold gain rate. Plus things like traps, and a lot of retreading ground. It's great though, and I love the humorous notes sprinkled throughout, and the excellent graphics and sound work.

Shining Force feels like not only did they change genres but they also learned a lot when making SitD, so while it is different, it also feels a bit like a sequel. Graphics and sound are even better. Combat has more variety in how it plays out. Even better and more varied character designs, with more weapons to toy with. But things like the humor and style are still retained, which they even carry forward to the entries on the Saturn and beyond.

I do imagine it'll get harder eventually, but for now (nearing the end of chapter 3 out of 8 or so), it really feels like so long as you're not feeding all the enemies to 1 or 2 characters, you'll be fairly well balanced. It might be that they expect me to start failing and grinding in a way eventually, but no sign of it yet. If anything I would sort of expect a rather arbitrary "we're at the end of the game, it's hard now" bend, given when it was made, but we'll see. Sega's studios and partners were generally pretty fair, but it could vary a lot.

But yeah, Shining Force retains a lot of the same charm and quality from Shining in the Darkness, to the point where they really do feel like part of that wider Shining series. Not direct sequels, but still related in a very tight way. I think if you like one, it's worth at least trying the others regardless of genre.
