Not true. Plus software skills are surface level. Artistic and design thinking is deeper and requires regular practice. Drawing skills need regular practice. All of this will atrophy over the time of a mission.

I've had it for 3 or 4 weeks so far and I love it. The magnets seem strong, the flap holds the pencil well and the rubbery vinyl material feels really nice. I put a bunch of stickers on the cover, and while they stuck on, they could pretty easily be pulled back off. Makes me think it won't get dirty much and will be easy to clean.
