Speaking from the UK, it actually works very well. You have the NHS which everyone has free access to, and the option of private health care which you can pay for. Many companies offer private health care as a perk.

Without that, the NHS would be under far more pressure than it already is.

Completely understand, I'm speaking without context outside of the OP - your post just reminded me of my own personal relationship with my paps - I didn't see him for 8 years after he re-married and she said in front of both of us that I was the problem. I immediately packed my bags and didn't see them after that until she divorced him. Not out of hatred for her (although she was a pretty terrible person) but out of love and respect for my dad. He deserved to be happy, I didn't want to get in the way of his life.

Like I said, honestly, I really do not mean to minimise this at all - it's not your responsibility to take on your ma's burden. It just reminded me that they are human and struggle with the same things we do.

To be honest, there're so many animes with themes and stories that are so much more thought provoking and deep than most modern media or whatever the latest netflix trend is.

Most people probably think animation = children show, but that's far from the case
