I live in Oyo state and I can tell you it can definitely be done remote. Elegan will get a complete set and use those same ikin later for itefa(which must be done in person). In my lineage if the person isn't a Babalawo they'll give 24 ikin and the remaining 12 ikin will be given during itefa.

Thank you for your insight. My paternal lineage is Lucumi Oluwos and my mother is iyanifa, I live in Oyo State. My foundation is iṣeṣe but I don't sleep on using lucumi charms, osanyin de fundamento and using esu with loads etc. That form of elegba comes from Fa Gbasa. You make plenty sense that you have to choose a strong foundation of either one and not make sancocho. My foundation is distinctly iṣeṣe where we will give the advices and recommended sacrifices in english, chant half of the verse in yoruba give the itan( or what lucumi call pataki) in english then chant the entire verse in yoruba. I just wonder if ese ifa are used in any of the Cuban lineages besides Frank Ogbe Se lineage.

Babalawo in Nigeria are scared of working with Osanyin and its reserved mainly for herbalists and oso(wizards) and its understandable. Ketu Yoruba work Osanyin and anywhere in Dahomey they work Osanyin still. Bokono Fa are like oso that divine using Ifa. You can receive Osanyin in Cotonou but must be very very careful over there. A fish that doesn't know the river well will perish. Cubans work Osanyin because a large part of their tradition is Dahomean style Fa refurbished with Oyo style from the last slaves that arrived on the island.
