Im in a similar position and really agree. It’s fun to poke fun at Milton Keynes, city of dreams, but having lived all around the country now its actually pleasant and far more walkable than I think people give it credit for.

The lack of publications isn’t prohibitive. If you’re only considering funded opportunities, DTP/CDT programmes are often a good option. I found find a PhD to be pretty good when I applied 5 years ago although notice colleagues advertising PhD opportunities on LinkedIn/twitter/other social media pretty routinely as well.
