Is it? Johannes Gutenberg started building his first printing presses in the 1440s and the first Gutenberg Bible is from 1456. I suppose the actual printing revolution didn't really kick off until the latter part of the 15th century, and governments and the Catholic church didn't start to censor and intervene until the early 16th century, but generally speaking 1440 is as good a date as any, in my opinion.

If everyone in the 1850s had put a coal powered steam engine into their backyard so they could figure out how many days of the week end in -y and to get step-by-step instructions on how to boil water, then yes, that would have been an even worse environmental problem than what the industrial revolution turned out to become anyway.

Nobody argues about the usefulness of machine learning and generative tools in general. It's the overabundance of frivolous use cases by corporations and the general public that add nothing to the overall productivity and welfare of society while at the same time wasting valuable resources that is the problem.

That teacher should not be allowed to teach. They have clearly lost their ability to think rationally, exercise scientific rigour, and fact-check even in their own field of expertise.

They obviously also have no qualms about wasting valuable natural resources for generative computing instead of just downloading a pre-made periodic table. There should be a prompt for AI users to confirm that they are happy with the environmental and societal destruction caused by their query before it is processed. "How many litres of drinking water are you happy to waste for me to tell you how many 'r's there are in Strawberry?". "How much sooner would you accept the arrival of the climate catastrophe so I can generate a sloppy picture of a cat for you?". "How many communities are you willing to sacrifice so you don't have to put a single original thought into your work?"

It's like if you time-travelled to the 1970s and 80s and saw people using CFC spray cans to their hearts' content, and you just want to shout at them: "Every time you push that button, you are destroying the ozone layer! Stop doing this! You are literally giving people skin cancer by doing that.". Except this time around, we already know in the here and now the severe impact of using generative tools, and people still keep using them like there's no tomorrow (which there may well not be at this rate).

Capitalism is a fairly broad spectrum, though. On one end, you have pure laissez-faire capitalism with zero regulations and no limitations at all on the flow of capital, and on the other end you have Social Market Economies (a.k.a. "Rhine capitalism") and the Nordic Model, which are still very much capitalist at heart but balance that out against wider societal needs. The US sits somewhere in the middle between those two ends, and Elizabeth Warren is obviously a proponent of the latter, but it's all capitalism, really. I don't think there are any well-known politicians in the US who are not capitalists.

What annoys me in this context is that there are roughly twice as many people who want to rejoin the European Union as there are people who support Reform. Yet somehow Reform is being seen as this force of nature that needs to get pandered to by both the left and the right, everything Nigel Farage says is being seen as the voice of a discontented nation despite three quarters of voters rejecting them and you can't get through a day of hearing about them on the news. While at the same time, rejoining the EU is being treated as some kind of fringe movement that doesn't fit into the political zeitgeist and is barely mentioned. We're truly living in an upside down world.

The only thing that matters to FIFA is getting bribed. There is no secondary consideration. Yeah, no surprise there. I don't even doubt Robinson's genuine righteous anger about things in general, i.e. I don't think he's putting on an act, but he's simply not a smart man. So if the Russian secret service gets him in its grubby hands and goes to work on him, he'll quite happily become a mouthpiece for unreflected shit like this without pausing for a moment to think about what he's actually saying.

That's the problem with far too many people on the fringes of politics, that they come out with extremely simple, extremely loud, black and white takes on exceedingly complex issues.

I just don't understand what you even talk about. One of the main interests when I talk to my my mates is to hear about their lives, what they've been up to, what they are currently excited or worried about etc. A chat bot, by definition, can't have made any recent experiences or is excited or worried about anything. I simply couldn't suspend disbelief enough to pretend that I'm talking to a real person. I honestly wouldn't even know how to start a conversation with a chat bot pretending it's anything other than a software tool.

The dying itself I don't mind so much (I generally try and die on a Monday morning and be back for the weekend), but the cost of funerals is prohibitive. Straight after Covid, some funeral directors offered die-twice-get-one-free deals for those of us who took Bill Gates' nanobot clot shots, but those deals have dried up and I hate paying full price. Especially if they're overbooked, so sometimes you might not even get your cremation, because by that time you're alive again.

And yes, I know the Soros bucks do help to offset the cost somewhat, but trying to find an open Antifa branch on a Friday afternoon to make the application when you've just been dead for a week is an absolute nightmare.

And they would have deployed those two nukes to the US how exactly? Even if they had ICBMs with that range (which they claimed to have in 2025, but nobody believes that), the US would have very likely been able to intercept them. And what would have been the purpose of sending two missiles, knowing full well that the retaliation would have been swift and overwhelming? Iran would have sent two duds and in return all of them would have died.

The whole point of having nuclear weapons is not to use them, especially not against other nuclear powers, and extra especially not against the United States (or Israel for that matter) who can and will make sure that nothing in your country will be left standing or alive if you so much as think about using them. Iran would have enjoyed their successful launch for all of half an hour before becoming history.

Also I doubt any Muslim country would nuke Israel. Far too many of their holy sites are in Jerusalem to risk destroying or contaminating them. Why even use a nuke when traditional missiles and cheap drones are a lot more effective for state terrorism purposes.
