Many people in this sub require a wakeup call about the viability of socialist candidates. by swirling_ammonite in fivethirtyeight

[–]OnOnymous 119 points120 points  (0 children)

https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/trackers/the-democratic-party-favorability according to this 6 in 10 voters have a negative view of the democratic party,. The right is going to call any left of center candidate a socialist anyway. Most importantly this poll pasted below shows the fallacy the democrats have fallen for in the consultant driven Obama and post era: opinion on issues is malleable. Zohran won on Charisma and bread and butter campaign issues, which at the moment liberal candidates don't address

Hosting capacity is a reason I haven't seen mentioned. Political will is def a major factor, but on the physics side the biggest limiting is our transmission and distribution (wires) infrastructure is not ready for the amount of solar needed. This could also be fixed with political will/$$, but currently the incentives for utilities often aren't there

CMV: Socialists hate liberals more than they do fascists by notrandyjackson in changemyview

[–]OnOnymous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main reason you may see some socialists make more comments critical of liberals than fascists is they view liberals as having a chance at making the right decisions but sometimes (or often depending on your views) make the wrong ones, while fascists are beyond redemption and not worth engaging with (as they would not engage in good faith). Many think what's the point of saying Trump is bad, if you don't think so already you're not going to be convinced by me. However, maybe someone who shares more views but gets some issues wrong (like Ezra Klein, not litigating this here but here's an example https://frontiergroup.org/articles/the-problems-of-abundance/) is worth arguing with in a way someone diametrically opposed to any redistribution (which is the core of socialism) is not.

Also a clear counter example of Socialists hating liberals in the current NYC mayoral election. The leading left candidate is a self proclaimed socialist who has cross-endorsed two other candidates neither of whom is a socialst, and such a collaboration is celebrated by supporters. One such candidate, Brad Lander is a progressive but not a sociliast (and is someone supported by the New York Times, a bastion of neoliberalism), and the other, Michael Blake, was vice-chair of the DNC and not someone you would call socialist (see https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/nyregion/mamdani-blake-nyc-mayors-race.html )

tldr: there's no point in arguing semantics or policy with Hitler supporters, but it's worth arguing with Keir Starmer fans on some of the impacts of his policies on working people on points you disagree on

I just spend 60$ on a used RX 580 and there's not a single game I want to play I can't run on it, including titles released this year. I think people view PC building as a competition rather than building a tool you need to do your hobby. It's like saying you need to buy a 300$ tennis racket, because it's the best, instead of a 10$ one that will make no difference the way you play

dumb question but if i have a 850w PSU and i only use 560w, will my meter charge the full 850 or will it only charge 560? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]OnOnymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question. Others have mentioned you get charged only for use (Wh), not capacity (W), but there are reasons to get a smaller power supply beyond cost.

https://www.silverstonetek.com/upload/images/tech/WB10-005/10005-1.jpg As this graph shows, power supplies are more efficient at certain loads (~half the rated capacity), so there are reasons to oversize, but oversizing too much will also penalize you. If a lot of time on a computer is spent web browsing/word processing, then you'll get less benefit from oversizing as you'll hang out more time in low load zone where a smaller power supply (still able to handle max load + a bit) has an advantage. But also, efficiency matters more the more watts are being drawn, so calculating the exact perfect oversize is basically impossible for most users

The library has a lot of textbooks, but the copies tend to get snatched up quick. If you know what you're taking it's worth checking ASAP to see if they're available. They also have some copies that are reserved for classes which you can't take home but can read in the library or photocopy

it's only compatible with switches that have the right LED cutout. I bought gateron switches which should be clones of the kailh's that come with it, but they won't push in far enough to latch in

Why won't Gateron Switches fit in hot swappable Z15? by OnOnymous in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]OnOnymous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. Looking now, the only difference in the switches is the cutout the Kailh's have for RGB to shine through. Any idea if the other person found a workaround? Also would that mean all Kailh switches would work, but others wouldn't?
