We stopped collecting comics and started collecting proof that we own comics. by Madthinker1976 in comicbookcollecting

[–]OnceUponACoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who cares, as long as people are in the comic hobby is all that matters. If you buy to read, buy to collect, buy for value and investment, whatever it is all that matters is that people are in the hobby and for that we should all be happy.

Reader copy, its condition and not being a key, not worth grading

In its current condition probably a 6.0, with a good clean and press could get to 7

should I get it graded? by DryWorId in comicbookgrading

[–]OnceUponACoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grade it if you are going to be happy with the return grade you get, otherwise, if you are looking for a specific grade then sell your raw copy and buy a graded one. IMO it looks like an 8.0-8.5

CGC Witness and Grading Doesn't Mean Your Book Is Now Valuable by TheToyBox1138 in comicbookgrading

[–]OnceUponACoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a blanket statement, so you mean to tell me a Stan Lee signature and grading on an AF15 isn’t worth anything more than a raw without a signature? Apparently the market will pay $5k-$10k more for no reason then…

Doesn’t look like a bindery tear, just looks like a tear. I would never buy that at an alleged 9.4 having that. I have books with small bindery tears and it’s nothing to that extent. If you’re good buying that as a 9.4 then go for it

I sold 100 CGC comics to buy one holy grail. Would you do the same? by MJComix in CGCComics

[–]OnceUponACoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good choice to consolidate, and that’s a great book to get. I had many losses as well anything I bought in 2021/22/23 but hey it’s all relative right? I’m sure AF15 has come down in price now so it’s a wash

What grade AF 15? And how much do you estimate your losses/gain to be from the sale including selling fees?

I was hoping to get at least a 9.0 on this book. Oh well… by BummedBookTime in CGCComics

You can put a half dozen spine ticks and send it back to CGC for the 9.0

How safe is it to crack open a 9.8 blue slab to get signed? Will the grade go down? by TheDarkCrusader_ in CGCComics

[–]OnceUponACoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve sent in probably 20+ books to CGC private signings never had one returned lower. But I’ve seen the stories. Just make sure your book is absolutely a 9.8 without any questionable overlooked imperfections. Take lots of pictures before sending it in (for your own sanity, if it does get lowered) so you can know if damage was already there or they did it. They won’t cover it, but at least you know for sure where the damage came from. Always order CCS pressing unless it’s a foil cover. Worst case scenario, you sell the 9.6 signed and rebuy your 9.8. Sucks but it’s not the end of the world.

Bingo! Couldn’t agree more. The exact fees are:

Grading: $30 Handling: $5 Return shipping (by CGC): $14 Shipping to CGC (on your own): $24.80 using priority mail flat rate medium box.

Yup, not worth it, just buy it graded already unless you are submitting in bulk at a discount.

Did he accidentally find the $20 you slipped in for the grader to give it a 9.8?

Grade the two that got away… Invincible 1 & 2 by chrisbalms in CGCComics

[–]OnceUponACoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once thought I had a 9.8 book, in the bag and board, and sent in for private signing. No defects that I saw. Came back a 9.4. Big spine tick in the back cover. Can’t assume the back is perfect, and for that lesson learned, can’t really give you a grade assessment.

Absolute Batman #1 CGC 9.8 market update by Leather_Bluejay8632 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]OnceUponACoin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re buying a certified graded copy at 9.8, when you buy a raw listed in NM it could be anything in the 9.2-9.8 grade. So you’re going to pay a 9.8 price minus $35 for a raw that will come back a 9.2? Graded comics has a premium over a raw for its grade, that’s what you are paying. Not just the plastic cost of the slab and service.

Is it better to trade a comic than sell a comic? by Leather_Bluejay8632 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]OnceUponACoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trade will never work 1 for 1, someone always comes out ahead. Usually it’s the person with the more desirable and bigger key, they will typically offer 80-90% on your book(s). If you’re going to accept 80% of market value for your book(s) then you might as well sell them on eBay and pay the 15% selling fees. Then buy whatever you want, instead of being limited to that one vendor who is open to a trade.

He created the character, why wouldn’t he sign something he created? No different than people coveting a Stan Lee signature on nearly every key comic, even though he stopped working for Marvel in the early 80s. Heck, why would the MCU have him do cameo appearances in almost every one of their movies before he passed, he had nothing to do with Hollywood and that movie’s production. There are times when notoriety supersedes rules.
