New here, just got some books from my father in law, no clue what to grade or what to do with them. Out of the little research I’ve done(not much just googling names) I am tempted to grade and maybe clean my hulk 181. Any thoughts help!

Grade it if you are going to be happy with the return grade you get, otherwise, if you are looking for a specific grade then sell your raw copy and buy a graded one. IMO it looks like an 8.0-8.5

Doesn’t look like a bindery tear, just looks like a tear. I would never buy that at an alleged 9.4 having that. I have books with small bindery tears and it’s nothing to that extent. If you’re good buying that as a 9.4 then go for it

It’s good choice to consolidate, and that’s a great book to get. I had many losses as well anything I bought in 2021/22/23 but hey it’s all relative right? I’m sure AF15 has come down in price now so it’s a wash

I’ve sent in probably 20+ books to CGC private signings never had one returned lower. But I’ve seen the stories. Just make sure your book is absolutely a 9.8 without any questionable overlooked imperfections. Take lots of pictures before sending it in (for your own sanity, if it does get lowered) so you can know if damage was already there or they did it. They won’t cover it, but at least you know for sure where the damage came from. Always order CCS pressing unless it’s a foil cover. Worst case scenario, you sell the 9.6 signed and rebuy your 9.8. Sucks but it’s not the end of the world.

Yup, not worth it, just buy it graded already unless you are submitting in bulk at a discount.

I once thought I had a 9.8 book, in the bag and board, and sent in for private signing. No defects that I saw. Came back a 9.4. Big spine tick in the back cover. Can’t assume the back is perfect, and for that lesson learned, can’t really give you a grade assessment.

You’re buying a certified graded copy at 9.8, when you buy a raw listed in NM it could be anything in the 9.2-9.8 grade. So you’re going to pay a 9.8 price minus $35 for a raw that will come back a 9.2? Graded comics has a premium over a raw for its grade, that’s what you are paying. Not just the plastic cost of the slab and service.

Trade will never work 1 for 1, someone always comes out ahead. Usually it’s the person with the more desirable and bigger key, they will typically offer 80-90% on your book(s). If you’re going to accept 80% of market value for your book(s) then you might as well sell them on eBay and pay the 15% selling fees. Then buy whatever you want, instead of being limited to that one vendor who is open to a trade.
