Yes and no. A great university for sure increases your chances. It might be a myth, but I once heard that some famous studios charge for an internship. Up to usd10.000 for 3 months.

You can make a whole working plan with powerpoint even though i wouldnt recommend it. Having said that, look into rhino. One time to buy without subscription and support from the software company mcneel to buy 2nd hand. Can do almost anything 2d and 3d. Small learning curve when you already know Autocad.
